As someone with a chronic illness, anxiety and depression, I can concur that 'something is better than nothing' is great advice and a great plan. Things can get so overwhelming that you can't do anything. Just try and do something. Great video, John.

Can't stress enough how important this is especially with any mental illness. Even if all it is that you do that day, is brush your teeth, it's still better than nothing. Don't want to take a full shower? Just wash your hair under the faucet, or sink. Or even just rinse your face off. It will make you feel better. These little things will add up to help make you feel better. Even if it's just one a day. I too deal with depression and during covid it got worse, not only from work being more stressful but because of not being able to see people. So I really got to see the benefits of doing something is better than nothing once I realized how bad I was getting.

I can’t speak for everyone, but something that has helped me mentally is coming to terms with the fact that “I am the one who gets to decide how today was” and with that I have decided that “today is going to be/will be/is/has been a good day because I said it is”. There is always something in the day that can be good, so don’t let the bad stick around longer than necessary

This message was something I needed. I have a really bad habit of stressing myself out, and to "alleviate" the stress I put more and more on my plate. "Something is better than nothing" I think is something I need to adopt a bit more. Do a little bit of one of my projects each day. Work a little bit on the things that I know need to be done. Do a couple things that will make me feel like I've made a bit of progress (doing some cleaning, going for a walk, etc). I have always enjoyed your videos. The silly, the energetic, and these little commentary videos are extremely refreshing. Keep doing you. :) Because every little piece we get to see is awesome.

I really appreciate this video, dude! I've been in a very similar boat. In the last 18 months, I have: bought a house, gotten married, started a KZbin channel, grown that channel to over 1300 subs, and had twins. All while working full-time outside the home. I've had to slow down my workflow lately, which sucks and isn't helping me reach my goals as quickly as I would like. But, as you said, something is better than nothing. I'm doing my best to get out one video a month (I managed bi-weekly releases for a while) and planning for a couple bigger projects this year and next. Keep doing what you're doing, man! You're easily one of my favorite PokeTubers, and I'll be eagerly waiting for your next release!

The “leaving the house” thing really hit me. I’m a new mom who works part time from home, so I don’t have a work place and of course socializing has become a lot more difficult now that we’ve got the baby to consider. I’ve been trying to push myself to leave the house with the baby for at least something every day, whether that’s running an errand, grabbing lunch somewhere, or going outside. Walks have been insanely helpful for me - there’s something wonderful about getting fresh air. Thank you for sharing all of this and I hope you have a great summer

I'm currently enrolled in college and I've been placed in an accelerated semester so I'm having to do 2-3 weeks worth of work in one and I find it difficult to keep the time organized and not overworking myself but you've made me realize that I don't have to be perfect as long as I understand what I'm studying and learn from the mistakes that the teacher points up. Thank you again for sharing this and encouraging me, bless your friends and family, and bless you!

Hey John, thank you for making this video. Really, I appreciate this so much. The concept of "something is better than nothing" has really stuck with me ever since I first watched this video, and I realized it's a good way to go about life. "Not every day is going to be great. Most days aren't. Some days are fantastic. But at the end of the day, you can say you did something, which is better than having done nothing at all." That may not be exactly how you said it, but that's how I go about things now. It's really changed how I view life, and made me realize I don't always have to be so hard on myself. Thank you, John, truly.

Something is better than nothing is advice a therapist gave me a year ago and it literally changed my life. Over the pandemic I ended up doing exactly what you described so bad that I had such horrible imposter syndrome that I couldn’t do anything. Couldn’t do college work, couldn’t interact with people, couldn’t act (im a longtime performer), nothing. That on top of a new ptsd diagnoses had me fully believing that if I didn’t do the best there was no point. And guess what? I never felt that anything I did was good enough to be considered the best. But when you just do *something*, it just totally kills that paralysis.

There was a saying at my physiotherapist: you have to walk for half an hour each day, but if you're busy you need to walk for 2 hours. That means that you really need to get some time for yourself. If you're busy all the time, you spend so much energy that you don't have some for yourself or even your family. It's good to take a break and just do fun things or nothing at all. It's a hard knock life, but if you find the right balance you can do so many more. Hang in tight. You can do it!! We all love you and you're not alone in this.

I completely relate to this, as someone with anxiety and who is a chronic procrastinator I’m the same, I get into a habit and then as soon as I miss a workout or don’t shower on the day I normally do I’ll fall completely off the wagon and just sit in my room watching KZbin for hours on end getting increasingly angry at myself for not doing something useful, but I just don’t want to. I also work in retail which is pretty much different hours everyday and 2 days off a week but they are never together, I also work Sundays so I never really feel like I get a proper weekend, then when I come home after as little as a 4 hour shift which to my family and friends if nothing I feel mentally exhausted, having to be social, helpful always happy even for 4 hours straight is hard especially when your not normally a social person, plus people treat you like shit all day and you just have to take it and be polite even when they aren’t to you. The thing I’ve found that helps my brain is basically bribery ( i don’t know if it’s technically healthy but it seems to work for me 😅) I tell myself if I do my workout or have a shower, go for a walk etc i get something in return, like get to play the sims 4 that night before bed, or get to open a pack of Pokémon cards. I feel like we are all expected to do so much in a day but sometimes I just want to come home from work a 2pm and go to bed cause I have no motivation left, why can’t we normalise just doing nothing and not feel guilty about it.

I will remember "something is better than nothing". I have recently been diagnosed with autism, and some days I won't be able to do much. So I have to be nice to myself and take care of myself. That will be my "something" those days. Then cooking and cleaning will have to wait for when I have more energy. It really is a great philosophy for anyone. Some days going outside is big for some people while just getting out of bed is that for others that day. I think, the important thing is to feel yourself out and accept where you are that day

I've been battling with severe depression and anxiety for 20 years now and have struggled so many times just to keep myself around. I put myself down all the time feeling completely worthless and a lot of the time I think to myself what's even the point of going on if nothing's ever going to change. And then we follow all these people on social media and streaming platforms such as yourself and you all seem to be beyond happy and living the dream job of content creation where you have hundreds of thousands of followers. And I think to myself "Why can't I be happy like that and enjoy what I do?" But then you make a video like this reminding us that content creators are just as human as the rest of us. You have the same stress, struggles, anxiety, and depression as the rest of us. And it reminds us that we aren't alone. "Something is better than nothing" is exactly what I need to keep telling myself in my day-to-day life. Thanks so much for the video John. I think the decision to make a new channel for these kind of self-help videos is a brilliant one. Content creators hold a ton of power and it's so rewarding to see that you're using that power to give back to your audience in a way that means a lot to us on a personal level. It's like a quick therapy session.

This reminds me of a Bluey episode. The child was sad and crying. The mom explained that you are allowed to cry, and then you can stand up and come back stronger (something like that). The daughter said that she felt like she could only cry at the moment, and the mother, again, said that that's perfectly fine and she should do that for as long as she felt she needed to. It's so important to take time and figure out what works best for yourself and not let the pressure of some of the people around you get to you. And I don't mean that they necessarily pressure you, but seeing how fast they work, how much they can do... don't compare yourself. Figure out your own pace. People work differently. That's perfectly fine.

Hearing this reminded me of the old saying. Slow and steady wins the race. I think the race is what we all feel life is. We have to get things done as fast as possible. Is it worth it if we are worn out and still feel like we didn’t do it “right”. I have been struggling with weight and keep saying. “I’m going to loose this much in this amount of time” and don’t end up doing it. I am now trying to change or redirect that mind set and say “ Hey look you went out for a walk good job. You did a little more then yesterday, that is progress.” Negative and what we think the world or other expect of us….hurts us more then we like to admit internally. Congratulate yourself on getting up, on just taking the time to look up from your phone and just notice the colors around you. Looking out the window at work, school or anywhere and just watch the wind or birds fly by. Hopefully will remind someone that there are difference paces in the world, and there is nothing wrong with taking a breath now and again.

This is a mentality I really need to try to hold on to more. I am a chronic perfectionist, have anxiety and ADHD, and have struggled my entire life with the feeling that my best is not good enough because it isn't literally perfect. I write and am trying to get a book of poems and short stories out there and it's just not realistic to expect to write "perfect" stories and poems since perfection is so subjective. My boyfriend preaches this mentality all the time and, while I still struggle to accept the something, I do feel like practice is making perfect (ironic). Thank you, John, for the reminder that it is okay not be be perfect 🐸

I wanted to start small, but I have only slept today, for hours at a time. I got nothing done. I'm out of clean dishes, clean clothes, my food in my fridge is bad, the animals are messy and destructive. And I just sleep. Don't exercise, haven't taken my medications, can't even find them in this trash palace. Every day gets worse. I wish I could get into the groove of doing just something... My husband and I gave a meal subscription service a try and it has been a game changer for eating healthier. No having to make a meal plans, its already done for you and no shopping. It does usually take me longer to cook than the instructions tell me it should but that's a me issue.

Truly this is one of those concepts that I've had to adopt as well, something is better than nothing. I've always been the person that if I couldn't figure out an assignment, I just wouldn't turn it in, so I got 0s for those rather than a something percentage for at least trying. As an adult, breaking things down and allowing myself to not be perfect and make things manageable instead of perfect has been a big improvement. Specifically, im moving soon so packing is a pain. I want to make everything perfectly organized and labeled so its easier to find things when unpacking. The trouble with that mentality is that its a lot of work, so I push it aside because I don't want to do it. I finally had to just say "okay we'll put things in 3 basic piles: keep, donate, trash (with a slight 4th pile of maybes) and sort from there" because its something, its not how I want to go about it but it works better than not starting at all. Allowing myself to make those little steps when im struggling to just stop and tell myself it doesnt have to be perfect just go for it, jump head first and see where it goesI appreciate you being honest and open about your struggles because it really just shows, like you said at the beginning from that comment, its important for people to know they arent alone in their struggles with things

I find I tend to make excuses for little things like I don't have the right pants to go for a work in, or I have got a towel when I go for a swim. Thank you for being you, opening yourself and feeling like a genuine person. You and your friends have gotten me through some difficult times just hearing you guys all goofing off and making jokes is wonderful

I came here because the title was interesting. I feel like I’m leaving as a slightly better person then when I started. That doesn’t happen very often on KZbin, so keep putting good out into the world as best you can!

I'm glad you are starting to feel better. I understand the being too hard on yourself and stretching yourself too thin. I really needed this video today, to hear everything you just said. If it means anything, it helped me a lot and reminded myself to be kinder to myself than I have been the lately. I think "something is better than nothing" is going to become my new motto moving forward to deal with life's difficulties and my depression/anxiety.

not to be sappy but legit John thank you for this. You have crept up to not only be my favorite KZbinr but also a human I very much respect online. This video hit hard and I will take a lot of your words to heart and think about them. Thank you.

John this mean the world to me. Knowing I’m not the only one who thinks this and knowing I’m never enough for myself or my friends. These videos are slowly helping me realise who i wnat to be as a person. And the fact you are able to say this out load to hundreds of people is such a pig achievement in itself! You should be proud!

Agreed with your video, seem like ppl only think about success or failure, but forget alot of time the success ppl looking to achieve is too big a step to take over a short time and most is unable to break their goals into smaller success step to take

Just keep at it, vid by vid, your building something that is your own. And one more thing, my wife is a doctor as well, 12 hour shift sounds exhausting, but it could have been worse, in Israel, they do 26 hour shift (no joke), so remember, even when it's get tough, there are people going through something even tougher and they are not tougher then you.
