Rubber bands? My grandparents used to grow 30-40 acres of cauliflower and as kids we had to join them in the field when the heads began to form. Every head got it's leaves tied together with a short chunk of bailing twine that as bought pre-cut just for that job. Back then a medium head was 25cents and a big one was 35cents. They made small batches of sauerkraut in ceramic crock pots. Good days to remember. Upstate NY, Catskills.

Now is the time to pull out the chain saws and wood splitter for firewood. Also round up the fall leaves for compost. I live near a national Forest and the forest ranger tags trees for removal...free for the taking... never have to buy firewood... since the wood actually belongs to the public, I can't sell it. I use leaf blower to gather up 100 or so trash bags of leaves... in the spring I spread the leaves in the garden and till them under... always have the best garden in the area.😃

G'day from Northern Australia. I'm actually surprised you don't string a hot wire around your spent crops and allow the cow/ pigs to eat the crop residue. I know you plow it under and it composts in place and enriches your soil. I get it. I do. I also know that pigs and cows have to eat and feed is crazy expensive. Cheers. ~D.

Never down talk your level of being a farmer compared to others. You are growing nourishment, joy, comfort and security for human beings. You are an equal to anybody else out there. Now this, you probably won't want to hear, but I think the best damn farms on the planet are 1/10th of an acre. A piece o somebodies yard! 20 plus years ago, I tried to be a retail store like you, and it failed miserably! People just wanted stuff for 99 cents! And every balking and offended customer was a walking case of diabetes, rot, pale clammy dimpled skin, just walking death, destined to live a long miserable life thanks to modern pharmacology being able to stretch out their suffering! I did bounce back through Farmers Markets, and spent decades building relationships. It's a happy ending for sure. We don't go to markets anymore, our customers are our marketing, they are our distribution, but we had to find sophisticated eaters in high income areas who wanted what we have for sale. We're doing 1000 acres of organic corn on contract, we're far enough into the seed business that we're committed at this point to selling 40,000 bags of hybrid organic seed corn that has been developed over the past 17 years. We committed 1000 acres to our feed business (which also serves some of our forage needs on the protein side, their are ways to use land for row crops AND forage, and 500 exclusively to our protein enterprises, and are adding another 1000 acres on the feed side next year after picking up a 1000 acre lease. But the most rewarding thing we have is our 80 acres of veg that gives us the products for our CSA. I won't bring in outsiders on the protein side. I refuse, our secret ingredient is love, and all of our livestock is personally handled by my kids. We carry small breed cattle called "Dexters", smaller Kune Kune pigs, and the whole assortment of birds. My kids can turn their backs on our animals, they are docile pasture pets. The only way that operation grows is my wife and I make more kids (we re at 6 and counting), and when my kids start having kids. I've rambled enough. Your a farmer when the results of your labor puts smiles on people's faces, gives them their nutrition they need that to prosper and enjoy a healthy life. That makes you an equal to "King Ranch" as far as I'm concerned.
