Yea! So optimized! Getting 40 fps is amazing. The graphics are simply not good enough for how low the fps is. If I had to guess a lot of the lag is behind the foliage. It's beyond me why there's no option to reduce the amount of rendered foliage. Ark and ESO are in my opinion graphically better and I can easily run them at 60+ fps because I can turn off or significantly reduce the rendering of every single blade of grass, leaf and flower that would be on my screen.

@@breakbend7707 You said it yourself. No way software should be able to make it run beyond its limits. Yet here we are with software doing exactly that. The software is developed FOR the hardware. You need to understand that crucial point. The hardware is made then the software is developed to meet the hardware criteria. If you buy a truck with a 10,000lb limit then stick 12,000lb on it what do you expect the result to be? It may work ok for a while or it may break immediately but either way its not the truck makers fault or poor build - its simply going past its design criteria. The safe running specs of the GPU are available for software developers so they know where to quit. Apart from this software the only other failures I've seen verified are where people have been running OC or over power - neither of which are what the cards are designed for in the first place. Too many people have been running OC or heavy load clocks for way too long so they just expect things to take it. Its always been at your own risk but people have got so comfortable with it that they presume its all fine. Oh and as for drivers - this is obviously bypassing the stock safe limits since its actually melting a soldered connection. There are no stock drivers which allow that or anywhere near that without tampering. That alone tells you this is 100% a software problem.
@HerrFlachpfeife
@HerrFlachpfeife 3 жыл бұрын
@@siraff4461 The software shouldn't have to care about what hardware it is running on. That's why PCs have DirectX or Vulkan and graphics card drivers. If the game is able to cause catastrophic damage to the card the problem must be sitting somewhere within the GPU driver, the GPU firmware and the design of the board.

This is false. There's been ways of manually/remotely destroying hardware through software for a long ass while now, most visibly internationally when Stuxnet took out those Iranian nuclear power facilities. Basically all you have to do is just modify the firmware to remove automatic shutoff protections for overvoltage/thermals. It really isn't hard to do and I'm honestly surprised hackers haven't taken people's shit offline via physical destruction since the 90s, which as you can see here even a damn game can do it.

As an amateur graphics developer, your analogy of adding numbers to 50 is decently accurate. Roughly, you can either send individual triangles to the card to render, or you can send large batches of them. It's significantly more efficient to send batches. I haven't looked over the draw calls for New World, but if their batching is bad it would absolutely cause unnecessary resource usage. It's not always a simple problem to work out what should be batched together, and what shouldn't, but it should absolutely be something they spend time testing in real world situations, and it seems that's where they failed.

Usually, the software cannot damage hardware statement should have a * next to it. But the people who keep repeating this don't mention this. The idea behind a protected mode operating system is that user mode software don't directly access hardware. So sure, this cuts out direct access to hardware. But there is always the assumption that drivers, firmware and hardware have to be fit for purpose. If there is a flaw in any of these then it is very possible for software to damage hardware in a protected mode environment. When you are not in a protected mode environment then software has direct access to hardware and it is then very easy to take things out.

Just to add some insight on the Developer side of things when dealing specifically not with Manufacturers but with Driver developers, NVidia in particular have awful communication with game devs. The worst I've seen in this industry. Devs are not only ignored but more often than not laughed at when raising issues with their software. They refuse to believe you, a measly indie game dev, would have somehow found a bug they missed. Reports that potentially contain information on hardware killing bugs go unnoticed or ignored for months so that the driver developers can spend their time giving 1 FPS increase in performance to a popular title. Personally it was a bug with the modulo operator and weird texture sizes in HLSL shader, causing artifacts due to sampler missing data it should have read fine. On AMD the sampler had no issue reading from weird sized textures even non power of two (NPOT) textures work fine, on Nvidia there are artifacts unless the sampled texture has a power of two. It took weeks for the problem to even be acknowledged by the engine developers as not being my fault or their fault, but then the bug report went nowhere as I hit the roadblock of trying to get Nvidia driver developers to give a crap. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if the people to blame are on Nvidia's side this time around. If not hardware then driver developers made a mistake. A GPU should never be able to melt itself at the request of a game, no matter how poorly optimized it is.

@Kevin Ruiz can't blame the game devs, it's impossible to test your game against every piece of hardware your customers are using. This is solely on Nvidia. If a car blows up because of bad design, do you blame the driver or the bad design? These cards should be recalled immediately.

@@DG-america it still doesn't change the fact that in this case a modern car (rtx 3090) couldn't shut itself off when the idiot driver (Amazon game) didn't take their foot off the pedal. @AndrewLauritzen
@AndrewLauritzen 3 жыл бұрын
@@abnormalcreations5432 The car analogy is misleading here. User mode applications (read - the game) have neither the control nor the responsibility to ensure that a piece of hardware doesn't do something it can't handle. This is entirely on the combination of the graphics card hardware, firmware and NVIDIA's (kernel mode!) driver. If a web page could brick your PC would you complain that the author of the web page should fix it or is it very clearly a problem with the OS/hardware interaction at some level? Even power "viruses" - i.e. actively antagonistic workloads - should not cause hardware to break. This is entirely on the OS/IHV side of the fence. There's no world in which this has anything to do with the application other than it exposing a problem. For reference, I have worked for all of these sorts of companies (IHV, OSV, etc). There is no one on any side of the fence that disagrees on whose responsibility this kind of thing is. The only time companies claim otherwise is when trying to cover up a screw-up (ex. AMD claiming that power viruses void warrantees and then getting correctly told to shut up and fix their shit.) It's the same here - NVIDIA/OEMs being silent doesn't mean its not their fault. That of course doesn't mean people can't or shouldn't do things to minimize the risk of hitting the issue (as suggested at the tail end of the video!), but that's a completely separate question than where the blame lays for such things. Ultimately the blame doesn't matter to the players, but ultimately NVIDIA needs to respond here, not Amazon.

Just not worth it, especially with the insane prices of the latest hardware. Now I built a rig 10 months after the hardware released. I know it's good hardware, it's literally half the price and will still run the latest games on maxed out settings. Maybe not in 4K at 165 FPS, but who cares.

Hi Jay, cringing developer here: Let me explain (without getting too technical) why you're both right and wrong here about Amazon being at fault. Software CAN cook hardware. Games should not be able to, though. Should not, but kind of can. There's a chain of trust here, and somewhere along it something's breaking it. The hardware's supposed to have thermal and voltage limits, it's covered in sensors in theoretically all the right places, and it's supposed to throttle or shut down before it can be harmed. Fault: Depends. Manufacturer or Nvidia or both. How close do the hardware and BIOS match Nvidia's spec? The drivers are supposed to implement safeguards. That depends on data from the hardware. The drivers should throttle back before hardware limits kick in. Either the drivers aren't doing it, they're ignoring data from the card saying it's too much, or the card's not sending that data. Fault: Depends, again. Nvidia writes those drivers, so if the problem's on the driver end, it's theirs. If it's hardware doesn't provide necessary data, it's probably the manufacturer's fault unless they're very closely following Nvidia's reference design for everything. Finally you come to software. It usually won't implement safeguards, and the safeguards it can implement are crude and arbitrary. But when you know people's irreplaceable hardware is being cooked to death, you implement those crude safeguards and you warn your users. Amazon hasn't done a good job at this. TL;DR: Don't let Amazon off the hook here, but what they can do is limited. You never mentioned Nvidia themselves as a potential party to this clusterf**k and they're definitely in the running for responsibility here. How responsible each party is will depend on factors we don't know yet.
@soerenbo
@soerenbo 3 жыл бұрын
Agree with almost everything you say on a technical level. But for me you are missing one key aspect of the whole discussion. How does only this one game cause this particular issue? Yes it definetly can be a hardware or driver failure, but how does only this particular game cause such a massive problem other, often even more demanding games, don't? Especially as we now know that it's not just EVGA. It definetly can still be a problem of the hardware, but the way it's triggered has to have some sort of connection to the way the game runs differently from others, and once that connection is found the core problem, no matter who caused it, can potentially be fixed. That's the reason for me why primarily the Amazon studion should investigate this at first. It's obviously not "only" their responsibility or fault, but it's their game who causes this failure, no matter if they produced the core problem. Who is to blame can then be decided afterwards.

Can confirm, something is weird with New World. I've got a Gigabyte Waterforce 6900XT and a good custom loop setup. The highest I've seen the max-junction value hit was 75'c up until New World. @blackraen
@blackraen 3 жыл бұрын
@@dwhit6529 Yeah, the temps were just a symptom, as New World is definitely triggering higher than normal power draw. The worst part is that it isn't just the voltage but the overall amperage draw that's doing it, so just limiting voltage won't do it, need to set a power limit. Putting a 90% cap on mine brought the temp down by 5'c, but I'll probably still hold off on playing. Seeing the game with a 90% limiter cause my card to steady-state at what other games hit with an overclock load still makes me nervous. Worst part with the 6900XTs is that if you have an 'Ultimate' card with the Navi 21 XTXH chip, the VRM is even more likely to overdraw.

Jayz actually your wrong! Kind of! Electronics engineer with 10+ yrs on hardware and firmware developement here. No game SHOULD be able to burn your gpu(with no over clock). No game can directly control gpu hardware. Mostly its game instruction, game engine, directx, driver, firmware then gpu hardware. Hardware damage should be prevented in hardware level. The other levels specialy firmware can cover hardware design weakness to some extent. Believe me! game engine developers do all kind of nasty mistakes and trial and error but do not break GPUs left and right!

I had an EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra Gaming. After changing my graphics settings from “very high” down to “high”, I had about 5 minutes of play and my whole computer powered down. The power supply relay clicked off immediately if I tried to power my pc back on, unless I removed the third 8pin power connector on my gpu. With my DMM, I traced it back to a dead short on the power rail immediately off the third 8pin power connector. So I guess not only did the OCP not work. The fuse that is on that pad also failed to trip. I had my card on a water block and never saw temps get out of hand.

The problem is, a game doesn't dictate what a GPU does. The hardware and drivers have the last say in what the GPU is allowed and not allowed to do. If you count that Windows is adding in certain new features for the GPU memory that has been a little buggy lately, I'm not 100% sure that New World is THE issue so much as a means to discovering the issue. With that said, by running a proper pre-compiler optimization pass followed by a debug, this game could potentially have been optimized much better than it has been. Even an outdated engine could be optimized to run smoothly if the compiler is up-to-date.

I own a RTX 3070 XC3, im also a VR developer as a context. I notice that my card and a lot more cards have "coil whine", im not gonna explain it cause you have before. New cards draw too much power, but the issue comes from unlimited FPS in some areas as menus, that isn't capped at 60fps or less, rendering 600fps+ amplifiying the noise quite a bit and stressing the components and generating too much electromagnetic fields that can cause a damage to your components, this is probably why the cards gone "black screen" in some instances over corrupted data. When i was a student of electronics i designed a lot of circuits with microchips, and noticed that without many many many filters of noise because i was sending too much data over the circuit, even a ceiling fan can cause interference with my data, changing values. Of course i agree, the software can cause a damage to the hardware, only if the hardware has a failure in it. You can do stuff to overcome this as a software developer and amazon should implement a solution, but in last instance is fault of the manufacturer not doing a good design, obviously this is something that Nvidia themselfves should caught on their chip/board design. As a mesure of prevention i undervolt my card, to limit the power it can draw, minimizing the coil whine.

Amazon Exec 1: "Hmm, people are actually buying GPUs on the marketplace at scalper prices. Should we do something about that?" Amazon Exec 2: "We make a cut from each one of those marketplace sales. Just pretend you never saw the scalping." Jeff: "I have a better idea, let's make a game that can potentially brick those GPUs, forcing buyers to come back to the marketplace and buy more GPUs at those scalper prices. We'll get paid twice, thrice, etc. from the same customers." Amazon Execs: "That's why you're the boss! You heard the man, begin Operation Catching Fire 2.0!"

For people who don't understand the problem. Basically, imagine if the only iPhone you could first of all find, second of all afford, was an iPhone 5. In 2021. That is the state of GPU prices. Graphics cards from 2012 cost as much as what the GTX1660 launched at full price.

XFX RX 5700 XT here. New World must have one of the most power-hungry main menus and queue screens I have ever seen and monitored. Testing many recent games and NW is the worse offender. The normal max power draw should be around 230W. NW's menu/queue screen is pulling nearly 90% of the card's rated max power draw rating. Sitting in the server queues (which can be for hours) and the card is working as hard, if not harder than in the game.

using a tool like Afterburner to save a massively downclock setting to a profile and enable it while sitting in the queue?
@ronhaworth5808
@ronhaworth5808 3 жыл бұрын
@@bernds6587 I already use Afterburner to override AMD's fan tuning because whatever you set in the AMD Adrenaline gets forgotten in a few hours and the fans go back to auto. I'm a believer that wide temperature swings aren't good for video cards and I prefer that they stay at a constant temp under load so I set a manual profile in Afterburner to do that. I not only play games but run Einstein@Home and I'm able to get the GPU temps to stay between 48C to 54C with very little noise from the card. It also helps that my XFX Merc319 card has an excellent cooler on it.
@bernds6587
@bernds6587 3 жыл бұрын
@@ronhaworth5808 that is indeed a quite interesting concept. But my GPU is at 53°C idling, and I do not want it to get too stressed in its advanced age, especially during the current GPU prices. So on stressful tasks the fans might go higher than they should be, but the temps at least stay in an acceptable range.

@@tristanreymendoza2402 look at how techtubers with brains covered it originally, we have to check the kind of follow up they'll do. I'm not a new world developer but is frustrating to see a guy with 3.5 million subscribers spill this kind of bs, because some people is going to believe him and he clearly has no idea of how an OS works and how a computer communicates with peripherals. And yes i've been in several parts of the development loop of a ton of products and can tell you, we are sometimes asked to build guards around flaws either at firmware or at driver level, because we can not say "o hey, remember that perfectly standard way of writting software you used? you can not do it because we messed up at some point"

@@DFX2KX NO, is people suddenly more stupid or what?! Yes amazon published and his studio developed it. But not even kernel space software should be able to brick a card, if it does, there is something wrong at hardware level. THERE IS NO FREAKING WAY AROUND IT. Look at EVGA they found their issue and they declared what the issue was because they fucking knew they were probably the ones to blame, and in this case is potentially nvidia, because guess what? maybe their reference design sucks!
