Today‪@WorkingHorsesWithJim‬, we get the skid steer stuck and go to the Amish pallet shop.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

I think that is a very rare thing that a guy can sit in a skid steer with running motor and have his horses pull him out of the snow only with voice commands. Not only do the horses pull, but more importantly they stop when told to do so. With all the work that you do most people would not think about filming so much , and with ever changing and interesting angles!
@WorkingHorsesWithJim

Thanks, I enjoy changing up the angles. The horses like it because they get more rest.

Why are horses so strong? All they eat is some oat muesli, carrots and hay. These beautiful horses weigh ten times more than me, but I need more calories. And I‘m still weak, especially on a diet 😂 Their metabolism is a miracle to me.

Well done back up with the log trailer attached to the forecast. That is very hard to not jackknife when backing up and the snow just makes it harder still. I would give a lot to have my team that good on the verbal commands for me to be able to take my hands off the lines!! My hat is off to your skills as a teamster! Don’t feel bad about not being able to film in the pallet place, many of my Amish friends would allow it either.

@@WorkingHorsesWithJim Just to let you know I have a Chevy Silverado 3/4 ton 4 WD. I have a 20 ft steel stock trailer. Hauling 2 horses no problems, if I load up all 4 going up hills can get slow. I decided I don’t drive up hills/ mountains often and mostly trailer only 2 at a time so I prefer the lower gas consumption of the 3/4 versus 1 ton truck. My guys run 1500-1600 pounds or so each, so slightly smaller than yours.can’t wait to hear what you found ( we also buy the trucks used since they are so expensive new).

Seeing you filling up your saw in winter reminded me. I built log houses in Alaska, years ago. I had to keep my bar oil in the house at night, and then build up a good wood scrap fire in my log yard, and keep the bar oil right by it all day, or it would solidify. I enjoy your videos. I find it relaxing to see the pace of work, the walking of your horses, it's a fine pace of life. While it looks slow, much can be accomplished,. The pace of work is deceiving in a way: it's much harder work than it looks.

Jim I really like your “dray” idea. I think it would work good on our long pulls here in the mountains. Innovation at its finest for sure. Please keep tweaking it as you learn more about it. I’d like to try something along these lines eventually. And kiddos to your hosses pulling out the skid steer. I work by myself most of the time and having the horses work by voice is like having another person there. It sure shows what you put into your animals my friend. Great work!

As a young lad growing up here in Cornwall, UK. horses were still being used especially in the cutting of cauliflower which along with new potatoes was the main crop. The horses were much better than the tractor as they could work by voice command, just like yours. There would be several men cutting the cauliflower and throwing them into the cart, when needing to move further up the field you said walk on and whoa when you needed to stop. Simple and no need for a man to be on a tractor, so labour saving too.

What was the name of the tree species you said at the beginning was firewood?. It looking considerable timber. The horses are really winter tow trucks. I wanted to have a close relationship with horses when younger but never had a chance as was not with them every day. With any animals you developed a closeness that is truly amazing, just like you have with your guys. Cheers To you Jim and your family too.

That was beech. The relationship that develops between horses and driver can be very special indeed. Cheers to you!

Ok it appeared to look like beech. I do a fair bit of carving Jim, and I used some beech in the rump of the carving of a copy of our Corgi Dog but 85% size of him. Beech is not a native species in Australia but I did make a show table inlayed with beech and Jarrah for my daughter. The beech was a left over of wood used in a staircase steps. A fair bit of the beech was spotulated - not quite shore how to pronounce and was a very pretty display in the wood. Basically what I am saying is a man throw away can be another mans treasure!

Isn’t it funny that we traded horses for machines yet it’s horses who come to the rescue of machines.

Re: new truck. Always been a GM guy. I have a 2500 and a 1500 Silverado. Great drivetrains! The rest of the trucks suck!!! My next will be an electric Ford.

Did I see some beech in that firewood? I thought so (my favorite firewood). As far as trucks, they are all pretty good but my F series Fords have always served me well. Thanks for sharing!

Is it beech, if so, is it the only usefull use of beech to be «fire wood» That's ok, I haven't been patient enough, You give the answer when you spoke about beech beeing slippery.
