Very sorry to hear about the loss of your goats. Dan, there is only one large animal that I know of that will kill an animal and only take its head and that animal walks on two legs. Did you see any paw prints, any drag marks of any kind, or blood spread over a large area? If not then I don't believe it was a bear, a panther, a bobcat or any other large predatory animal other than of the human kind. Is there any way you can provide shade for your plants? There are products like Coolaroo Shade cloth you can buy in a roll or you can by premade sizes. You can get large quantity of shade cloth from stores like a Dollarama. These shade clothes are dual purpose in that they provide frost protect and sun protection. Your irrigation system will cool the roots but a good quality shade cloth will cool the whole plant.
@HomeInTheSticks5 ай бұрын
Thank ya for watching and commenting my friend and I'm hoping it's not a human predator, wouldn't be good for them if I catch them!! As far as shade cloth, I have looked in to Coolaroo as we sell that brand at the cooperative I work at, the only hinderance for be the wind and mounting the shade cloth, I'd have to reconfigure my raised beds, which wouldn't be a problem. Dan

I know it’s controversial but people have claimed Sasquatch does that. But what’s strange is that is not typical predator behavior. Head would be the last thing eaten. And sometimes doesn’t even get eaten on something as large as a goat. Strange.

Me too, the heat is taking a toll on my landscaping and older trees on my property in the desert. So sorry to hear about your goats. This is going to take a lot of investigating to figure out what the hell happened. I typed your situation into an artificial intelligence prompt and it spit out this information. A lot of what you already know and have done, but maybe you can insert better questions into your Ai prompts and get more helpful answers..... Possible Culprits for Decapitated Goats The decapitation of your goats is a disturbing incident. While it's difficult to say definitively without examining the scene and the remains, here are some potential predators known for such brutal attacks: Potential Predators: Coyotes: While they typically go for the throat, there are rare cases of coyotes attacking the head. However, decapitation is unusual for this predator. Mountain Lions: These solitary predators are known for their powerful jaws and can inflict severe injuries, including decapitation. Large Dogs: Stray dogs or feral dogs in packs can be incredibly dangerous to livestock and have been known to cause similar damage. Human Involvement: In some cases, human involvement cannot be ruled out. This might involve illegal activities or even animal cruelty. Evidence Gathering: To get a more accurate answer, consider the following: Examine the Paddock: Look for footprints, claw marks, or other signs of a predator. Inspect the Bodies: Check for specific bite marks or wounds that could indicate the type of predator. Consult with Local Wildlife Officials: They may have knowledge of predator activity in the area and can provide expertise. Consider Security Measures: If possible, install security cameras or other deterrents to prevent future attacks. It's crucial to take steps to protect your remaining livestock and to prevent similar incidents from happening again. Would you like to provide more details about your location, the size of the paddock, or any other relevant information? This could help narrow down the possibilities.

In central Texas we had a mountain lion jump the fence and carry off 2 half grown goats. My parents found one about 200 yards away from the pen, and never found the other one. They have a 30 mile range, and they never lost another one to the mountain lion. Been living on the property since 1978. So it might be a one time thing. We had dogs at the time, border collies, and they would not leave the porch the night the ML got the goats. And they liked to go hunt for critters any other time. My Mother stopped going out at night without a gun.

Stay cool Dan. Living on a smallish island (Britain) humidity is a big problem. Climate change is also a factor and many fields are flooded here, the rain has been biblical. I am so sad about your goats. I'm afraid I suspect the sickest mammal of them all. The human. I think a bear or big cat would carry off the carcase. If the heads were gone and no traces of dragging or blood were present at the hole that was dug under the fence, I would also assume a large cat. I don't believe a coyote or bear would be able to jump that fence, especially carrying the heads. I never have believed the panther stories, but my wife and I did once see a large cat near my farm in E.C. Miss. It was bobcat-sized but was a solid tannish-brown with a long thick tail. I'm fairly certain what we saw was a Jaguarundi. If I had to make an educated guess on your situation I would also guess a very large bobcat, but it is odd to me only the heads were taken. I wish you luck finding the culprit, I'm very curious myself.

Many cultures eat sheep, goat, pig heads etc (my grandma who was Welsh did a good calf's head stew) but the rest is eaten too. No culture discards the body. Nor do predatory animals. No predator takes just the head of large animals other than a human. A cat won't do that & neither will a bear. Your killer is almost certainly one or more young males of the two-legged variety. I'd file a police report. Likely nothing will come of it but there's always the off chance that someone will hear about some kid throwing a goat head at another kid or something equally as stupid. Teens tend to brag so there's a little hope of finding your culprits. So sorry this happened to you & your animals.
