In South Carolina, at least at the time of the crime, there was no true life-without-parole sentence, only the death penalty or life with the possibility of parole after thirty years. Had she been sentenced to death and then that was overturned, she might have had it commuted to life without parole. I only know this because I read the book written by the father of her two victims. He specifically stated this was why he wanted her sentenced to death.

I watched this tragedy on television from California, and I still remember the photographs of those little boys. I’m so glad for everyone, including the community, that this woman will remain in prison.

Do you remember that the stepfather r****** Susan for years starting before she was a teenager? Susan reported the abuse and South Carolina decided on family counseling. The step father admitted it, but was never charged. Susan had no chance to talk to anyone alone, and the abuse continued. There are many equally as guilty as Susan, including South Carolina, that now denies her parole.

Susan Smith killed her two boys so a paramour would want her. He didn't want children. What she did was calculatedly murder two innocent little boys. She should never be allowed to be free again. She should have been convicted of two 1st-degree murder charges with no parole. I would hope she could find salvation and give of her self to younger inmates. Her voice is the same as 30 years ago, I would think terrifying to those boys. They knew her! We didn't know what she was capable of. They did.

Im one year younger than this evil vile person and i clearly remember how she acted so sad and played thr victim and tried to blame it on a black person. It looks like she was showing remorse to me. Aside from the childhood sexual abuse, I also suspect the reason she wanted to kill herself was an abusive husband. But, lack of remorse should not be the sole reason for not being released. The likelihood of a repeat in the actions of the offender should be the main criteria, and given that her children are now gone, it's not likely to happen again.
