Something the Lord Made is a 2004 American made-for-television biographical drama film about the black cardiac pioneer Vivien Thomas (1910-1985) and his complex and volatile partnership with white surgeon Alfred Blalock (1899-1964), the "Blue Baby doctor" who pioneered modern heart surgery. Based on the National Magazine Award-winning Washingtonian magazine article "Like Something the Lord Made" by Katie McCabe, the film was directed by Joseph Sargent and written by Peter Silverman and Robert Caswell.

This brought me to tears; I was born in the early 60’s a blue baby, I credit Dr. Vivien Thomas with saving my life. Black people have been helping me all my life.

I have worked with many black people even in the 60s. I also had many friends that were Hispanic and black. God made us all in his image. That's all there is to it. This racist nonsense is all man made evil from Satan to divide and cause violence.

I can't wait for the day when saying "black people helped me" would be just as silly as saying Red Headed people helped me. When it would never even occur to anyone to say that. One day maybe we will be advanced enough not to single people out by an unimportant characteristic. One day.

@@LittleBitofHopeToo2518 It is significant the person was black due to the conditions of Jim Crow around that time. To put that aside is to ignore history. He is a black man and he pioneered the procedure for curing blue babies,. That is it. If you can't stand that he is black then it is between you and your God.

This Movie is extremely moving, it’s very spiritual. The way Dr Thomas is humble from the very beginning to the last oh God it brings tears to my eyes. It took 40years of hardship , dedication and sacrifice for him to be recognised as Dr. What God place in you no man can ever take it away. Thank you for this movie ❤️🙏

My husband is retired from the printing business, he served his time in Vietnam as a medic. He is awaiting word to receive the Soldiers Medal for heroism which got overlooked when he returned home. He rescued several comrades from a burning helicopter. He is my hero, he worked hard all his young life providing for me and our two little girls, I never had to leave them to work. We have been married almost 54 years, we met when we were 17. We love our God, our family, country, and our fellow man. We are white and wish more people especially blacks knew of such unsung heroes as this brilliant doctor. It shamed me the behavior of the white doctor. Thank you for your kind words, there should be more people such as yourself who cares. God bless you.

So many people don't know and don't want to hear about the amazing contributions to this world made by black inventors and doctors etc etc etc etc, the list goes on and on. Too many white people have taken credit for the good our race has added to this world because 'God' forbid we lift up our fellow men and women OF COLOR. I.E. the next time a racist white person has a heart bypass, they can thank the black doctor who invented it to save ALL LIVES !!!!

I did not know this story…it is so deeply moving. Acknowledgement of the topics and historical difficulties yet, their brilliance shown by Dr Thomas and Dr Blalock is spiritual. The moment in time to help and heal blue babies and heart surgery, there are no words for the courage of these two men and of Dr Thomas’s vision to act and Dr Blalock’s vision…it took two great, great men. God’s guidance present in both.

A super, superb movie showing an unprivileged Aftican American painstakingly aspired and astonished everyone with his all conquering hard and smart work in medical research and science to help and innovate new procedures, techniques and ways. It was most unfortunate that discrimination impeded his college opportunities and he was only recognized when he was elderly. Well, better late than never. Vivien Thomas gave his life to medicine and research. ❤

We are the recipients of this man. My daughter had open heart surgery in 1986 done by Dr. Denton Cooley at the Texas Children’s Hospital. Dr. Cooley walked around with an entourage of medical students and every word he spoke was recorded. Unfortunately she died. She was technically a blue baby born with “transposition of the great vessels” She was 13 months when she died in my arms. I am grateful for this man’s knowledge, it bought me a year I would not have had otherwise.

@pizatoboy, in their hearts, they know. Also, this is a movie which, clearly a very shortened version of the actual events that took place, could not possibly include everything that was actually said and done during the course of the discovery. Don't be too sure that they did not give glory to God. Remember when Dr. Blalock said: "Are you sure you did this Vivien? This is like something the Lord made." He knows. Blalock may have been prideful (as we all are sometimes), but no one can deny God's work! Also, keep in mind that while we should always praise God with our lips, another way we give God glory is by doing His will. Yes, we should publicly thank God for His help and guidance, but we should also honor Him with our actions. I think that the two doctors did God's will by helping sick people. I praise God that He didn't allow the white men to steal all the credit. So much has been stolen from black men and women. God had to intervene because most white men in those days had no courage to tell the truth.

“Something the Lord Made” is a compelling narrative of triumph over adversity, scientific innovation, and the complex dynamics of a partnership that changed the face of medicine. It is a tribute to the unsung hero, Vivien Thomas, and a reflection on the societal changes that have allowed us to recognize the contributions of all individuals, regardless of race or background.

Loved this movie. I was born blue and I was left in an oxygen machine on the third day I got my operation. I had the same one baby Eileen had. But, there is more than an operation to the heart CHD babies can survive but only a patient can tell that just because we got it created it doesn’t mean we are well completely. I believe more research about how the function afterwards. I know I can’t function like whole person. Thank you dr. Vivian Thomas and dr Bloclock along with the women doctor. I know your in heaven.

GOD is the true Hero here. Dream was from God that gave him the solution to an impossible situat. Reminds me of Joseph of the Bible. To keep him humble, God allows us to be broken and be raised up at the right time. So we can say from the heart, to give all the glory to GOD!

Well Blalock was definitely a self-righteous megalomanic that much was sure.

This truly touched my heart and I have to wonder just how many cardiologists / surgeons know this story of DR. Vivian.

Fantastic film. I'll watch anything with Alan Rickman in it. And Kyra Sedgewick. Totally worth watching twice.

The doc is a terrific mentor. As soon he recognizes Vivien seems to be an excellent student - he mentors him. And no humming either about Vivien being black. In a country whom do have rascist laws being extra suspicous wouldnt be any remarkable... And also, it seems he does have empathy. He uses the animals for testing, but he very apparently HAS empathy to animals. Ps. I see he has a temper; possibly he is mentally not fully stabil. Probably the reason why he is working alone. No white assistant is willing to work for him, and that is why the two foregoing janitors did quit.

One of my favorite things about God is how He uses the simple to confound the wise. Treasures hidden in plain sight.

It's simply amazing that people were treated as property not too long ago. I'm so glad those times are changing and we can see the evil in that.
