The big question with these lithium-powered gadgets is how long can they run before the batteries heat up and deactivate for safety reasons?

Ah yes, that's a good question. Often times they do have thermal protection and I have had some cordless tools stop until they cooled down. Of course that's not really going to happen with a blower.
