This film was released when I was seven years old. The People Under the Stairs is an underrated horror film from 1991 that deserves more recognition. Directed by Wes Craven, the film is a dark and twisted satire of class warfare and gentrification, set in Los Angeles's impoverished neighborhood of South Central. The film follows Poindexter "Fool" Williams, a young boy who is forced to participate in a burglary of a wealthy family's home. However, he soon discovers the family has a dark secret hidden beneath their seemingly perfect facade. The film is praised for its unique and disturbing atmosphere, its sharp social commentary, and its strong performances. Craven's direction is masterful, creating a sense of dread and suspense that never lets up. The film's themes of class division and the exploitation of the poor are still relevant today, and the film's message is as timely as ever. The film's performances are also top-notch. Brandon Adams gives a breakout performance as Fool, and Ving Rhames delivers a menacing turn as Leroy, Fool's older brother, leads the burglary. Wendy Robie and Everett McGill are also excellent as the creepy and sinister married couple who own the house.

Loved this movie as a kid. Having Fool as the protagonist was amazing to me and as a mixed kid, it was cool to see him being the lead. And he played in another horror movie called Ghost in the Machine later before Mighty Ducks. Love most of Wes Craven's works and this was another fun one. Also, love Kelly Jo Minter. So many people forget that she survived 3 horror movies as a Black woman in the 80s-early 90s: NoES pt 5, People Under the Stairs, and Popcorn.

I saw this movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I wasn't expecting how much I love this movie even though I'm a Wes Craven fan. RIP to Roach! I was sad that they killed him off. Fun fact: The girl that played Fool's older sister was in Nightmare on Elm Street 5: Dream Child. She was the one that's was Alice's friend Yvonne that swims and dives and woke up Freddy's mother Amanda's body.

This has honestly become my favorite film from Wes Craven, it starts off as a home invasion horror film, and then by the end it turns into an action film, and I can see how this movie is like an influence to Jordan Peele's films. I heard that Peele is supposed to produce a remake of this film, and I am honestly intrigued by how that might turn out.

@@SomethingCinema My apologies for the late comment, but I have complete faith in Peele with the _Under the Stairs_ remake, his last three horror films (Get Out, Us, and Nope) has not disappointed me at all (he had even helped reignite my love for horror films just when I was about to lose hope in the genre). 😉😀

This movie just proves that you don't need music to make a movie scary. Along with some other movies sometimes the absence of sound makes it scary. Along with Wes Craven understand that thinking outside of the box works. Because the standard horror movie formula would of had the people under the stairs. Be the "monsters " of the movie but in this movie they where the victims an heroes in the end. Only a few writers did things like this where they did the opposite of every one else. Clive Barker did it in some of his movies like Hellraiser 1987 an Nightbreed 1990 but only watch the Directors cut of Nightbreed. Because the movie studio interfered an mutilated and twisted Clive Barkers story. In the theatrical release version to fit the story the movie studio wanted to tell. Because they hated the story that Clive Barker was telling in the movie.

This is one movie that Wes Craven actually wrote himself along with more. I bring this up because Wes Craven directed an produced an was a executive producer. On alot of movies but that's all he did on them he only directed or produced or was a executive producer on the movie. He had nothing to do with actually writing the movies script or screenplay at all. Other people did that an those writers deserve the credit for writing. The movies but most people give all the credit to Wes Craven. That's why you have to pay attention to the see who actually wrote the script or screenplay for the movie. Because it might say like Bob wrote the screenplay an it was directed by Wes Craven. Because Wes Craven only actually wrote 14 movies himself in total. Here they are in release order. I will also put D if he directed it an P if he was the producer an Exp if he was a executive producer on it. But Wes Craven wrote all of these movies himself. The last house on the left 1972 D side note it was his first movie. Its also one with a extremely unpleasant story plot. Even Wes Craven said so on the audio commentary for the movie. The fireworks woman 1975 D The hills have eyes 1977 D Deadly Blessing 1981 D Swamp thing 1982 D A Nightmare on Elm Street 1984 D The hills have eyes part 2 1985 D Nightmare on Elm Street 3 Exp Shocker 1989 D, P The people under the stairs 1991 D, Exp Wes Cravens New Nightmare 1994 D,Exp The hills have eyes 2 remake 2007 P My Soul To Take 2010 D,P An one more but from the name it looks like a non English movie. But Wes Craven actually wrote these movies himself. Along with the other things I put after the movie. Because if you want to understand how a writer an director thinks. I want to see the movies that they actually wrote themselves. That's why I did that research because every one of these movies. Has an shows Wes Cravens own original ideas an his own an original thinking process. That's how you get to really know an understand a writer and director. By seeing the things they actually wrote themselves because no two writers are the same. Because when it comes to the act of directing an producing and executive producing. It's the same thing regardless of if it's their own screenplay or someone else screenplay. But to understand how they think you have to see what they. Actually wrote themselves because that's unique only to them.

@@SomethingCinema Yea apparently Wes Craven edited alot of adult movies. Then he made his own an directed it under a fake name. This is why I aways say if you want to understand a movie writer and director. You have to look only at the movies they actually wrote themselves. Because every writer has their own way of thinking. Like that movie has from what I heard has Wes Cravens own style. That being about the devil working to get a prest to leave the church. Thats all I will say trust me you don't want to know the details.
