Hawaii is beautiful, with some of America's most incredible nature and Waikiki Beach, Maui, and Volcanoes National Park. Hawaii is an unparalleled paradise surrounded by warm Pacific Waters with vast nature, unique geography, and exceptional amenities. But who is it, that Hawaii is a paradise for? Not regular Hawaiians (now) fleeing Hawaii's islands- due to economic turmoil and environmental problems, or the ones stuck working in a tourism industry that gets so much out of Hawaii (but gives little back)

Aloha I moved to Hawaii in 1968 and went to UH and lived and worked in Waikiki at 20 years old. What an experience‼️ Hawaiian music was always playing from the stores on Kalakua Avenue. If a person crossed the street all traffic stopped. Police were on the street on foot in some places. Beaches were never crowded except Pipeline and other surf spots on the North Shore. No radios, TV or phones or grocery store on the North Shore. A bus would go by once in awhile. 1972 moved by Waimea Bay with my husband I met in Waikiki. We had our newborn daughter 💕🙏 The local people were the best part of Hawaii for sure. We respected them and the Aloha Spirit. I learned so much from Hawaii back then. We went to Lahaina many times and my husband won the beard contest by the Pioneer Inn 🤙

As a fourth generation Hawaii resident (great-grandparents emigrated when Hawaii was a republic) now living in Florida, I agree with almost everything this video states. Part of the state's problem is that the state government collectively has no imagination. When sugar and pineapple left it did not aggressively seek to replace them. To be sure, there are macadamia nut, coffee and exotic fruit (eg., gooseberries) currently being grown, but these are tiny. "Political correctness" blind bureaucrats to the possibility of cigar wrapper tobacco leaf agriculture even though this was attempted in the 1950s and could be lucrative.

The bulk of Hawaii's population lives on Oahu, not the Big Island. In order it's Oahu, Maui ,then the Big Island (Hawaii).
@SomethingDifferentFilms
@SomethingDifferentFilms 8 ай бұрын
Yes Oahu has a population in excess of one million, it's the only Hawaiian island with such a significant population. Of course the Big Island has the 2nd highest, but it isn't even close. I made that clear throughout the video, but I see where I flipped the two when stating population in order (that's something I will continue working to improve in future content). Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

My Mom spent her early childhood in Hawaii, though she doesn't recall leaving Oahu. The lack of transportation in emergencies was made painfully clear in Maui last month, and it's stupid to be building anything on an active volcano (much of the Big Island).

The only thing that makes Hawaii "work" is tourism. Without cheap air travel and masses of tourists, Hawaii would have to be come much more self-sufficient in food, would have its military bases and a trickle of tourists wealthy enough to travel there perhaps by ship, and most of the place just ... existing. Like American Samoa or any of the Pacific Islands that don't have a huge tourism industry.

I think a lot of analytics miss the military presence on O'ahu as a factor. The amount of land that can be actually developed is minimal as it is. You have a massive footprint and thousands of rotating service men and women that aren't truly residents. They pay taxes to their home state of origin and I beleive most of the provisions purchased on post don't generate local sales tax. They do bring in some consistent revenue generation but I never can find any statistics on it. Footprint compared to gain.

Geography is not the problem in Hawaii. You almost got to the real problem in the video: the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom by the U.S. is the problem. When a nation is deconstructed, it’s people oppressed, and it’s land treated like a playground for the wealthy elites of the invaders, that’s going to cause some problems.

@@SomethingDifferentFilmsI say the following with aloha and to raise awareness. Hawaiians are deeply spiritually connected to their land so to say the Hawaii is doomed due to its geography is offensive. The problems you mentioned have almost nothing to do with geography: there are natural disasters everywhere and they are very mild here; the high priced foods you mentioned are the diet of outsiders who desire those things to be shipped here and homelessness did not exist in the Hawaiian kingdom; it is a direct product of U.S. imperialism. In fact our geography is so amazing it allows us to grow abundant food year-round, I have never paid one cent for heating or air conditioning and we enjoy the cleanest water and air on the planet when the U.S. military isn’t poisoning it. 🤙❤️

Fire spread across Maui? Not. Just mostly Lahaina area. Hot Lava is only on Big Island. Only 2% of hurricanes actually make landfall. We are lucky because the water temperature is just cool enough to feed less energy to storms and hurricanes causing them to go mostly south of us. Cost of living sucks, though. Lucky we got Pearl Harbor because it seems the only strategic advantage for the USA in the Pacific. I'm not sure if Saipan or Guam military presence is as significant as Pearl Harbor. Negative economic trend, yes, true.

Hawaii like Florida... shacks built right up to the ocean. No insurance. Families more than one living together. Loved to death and over populated. Not a paradise living in poverty. They get more federal dollars than they pay. Hawaiians are going to have to organize and volunteer if they want to be safe. Someone must help in disasters. They are not a 3rd world country or are they? Few rich and the rest poor. Prone to disasters. Yet they continue to build where it is dangerous. Building codes are not enforced.

Your prices are based on living in the downtown Honolulu area on Oahu. Of course rent, gas and groceries are expensive there, but if one lives on one of the outer islands where local farmers grow food and land is more abundant, prices are only about half as expensive as the ones in the video. Eat what is locally grown, not food shipped in. There is plenty to choose from. I have a home on the Big Island, so I know this to be a fact. I do not need A/C or heating. Temperatures remain between 85 and 65 year round. This allows us to grow an abundance of food through out the year. About 120 inches of rain annually waters the fields and is captured for home use. Solar panels power the home, so I have neither water nor electric bills. Shorts, T-shirts and slippers make up the clothing costs. We don't have hurricanes. We do have an occasional minor earthquake like a lot of places on the mainland. The active volcano is far to the south of the island far from most of the population centers. Hawaii is not dangerous, especially compared to living in NYC, LA, Chicago, Philly, Baltimore, etc. If I was thinking of moving to New York state, should I check prices in the downtown NY Manhattan area? Of course not. Do some research before making a video like this.

Being a Hawaiian and my family being here for generations, I will agree with some of the comments mentioned. I believe that the biggest issue is the local government not doing there job to develop more industry here in the islands. We are a heavily democrat run state and I think that is our problem. We should go back to being an agricultural state and being supported by our federal government to achieve that. Our politicians suck really and that is our problem, not the geography!!

I'm 72 years old, still healthy and still working. I live in Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island. "Low pay, low benefit tourism industry"? WHAT??? Housekeepers at the resort hotels can make $50,000 a year. I make nearly $50,000 working in maintenance for a timeshare resort, and I collect an additional $21,000 a year from Social Security. My medical benefits, from my employer's private insurer are probably worth another $20,000 a year -- and I have been using them, including hospitalization. For those not working, Medicaid in Hawaii provides you with probably over $50,000 in free benefits. Food stamps here are generous Yes, Hawaii can be expensive, but rents here are lower than California. Food prices are outrageous, so I have cut back on artichokes, melons and fresh asparagus. I buy papayas at 5 for a dollar in a local market instead. For families, the cost of living here has made Las Vegas a suburb of Honolulu. There are more Hawaiians in Las Vegas than in many parts of Hawaii. But if you are a single person with modest tastes, Hawaii is the best place on earth.
@SomethingDifferentFilms

It's much different for younger generations that have experienced more inflation and a significantly lower rate of home ownership (still the principle way America's grow wealth). So yes the pay can look decent on paper, but fifty grand in Hawaii isn't fifty grand in Alabama or Michigan or even Florida.

Geography is NOT the reason Hawaii became a state. They got SCREWED OVER by Alaska. The vote whether or not to join the union was lumped together with Alaska. So citizens of each voted. Alaska which had morw voters wanted in. They out voted the Hawaiians. Hawaii never got to vote its own destiny. If it had they wouldn't be part of the u.s. now. The U.S. new this too. Setting up the vote in this way was to intentionally deny Hawaiians any choice.
