Sometimes I hate being a creative - my thoughts as an artist. Social Media as a full time artist.
My current thoughts as a full time artist, and creating a more mindful and intentional creative lifestyle and trying to care less about the social pressures of others . Discussing the issues faced when trying to price artwork and that makes us creative.
My name is Bethany and I live in the south coast of England. I have been a full time artist for over five years now and after recently experiencing burn out, I'm trying to take a more mindful approach to my artistic business. Feel free to subscribe and come along on my journey or learning to live more freely and intentionally. Sending love to you ❤️

I can put a photo of my daughter pony up just a quick phone snap that took a millisecond out of my time up the yard and post it, it gets comments and likes that are far beyond anything some of my art gets, a piece that recently took me 3 weeks of full time work, well 60 hours a week (that’s my full time) to complete, from the time I started sketching it out to finishing, it was my largest piece to date and honestly the 1 I was most proud of. I posted on Instagram at the time of day and day of week that my engagement has always been the highest. It was up for 2 hours, I got 1 like, I removed it in floods of tears. I’ve never felt so deflated. I sat and wondered why, why do I do this to myself until I remembered the pure joy I felt as I was creating it. I will continue to create and grow as an artist, a person and an entrepreneur. But I feel ya Bethany, you’re not alone🤞you come out of this burnout stronger, and still in love with creating, I can’t imagine a world without your art in it x

Unfortunately we are in a world these days where people feel the need to speak their mind and voice their opinion, regardless of how mean it can come across. I adore your work, and love the videos you put on here showing your process. I can't help with an answer to how you feel atm, but just know that there are so many of us out here giving you a huge virtual hug and an ear to listen whenever it's needed. I hate to think you're feeling so low, as you are obviously such a lovely person with an amazing talent. Sending much love xoxo

Bethany your Art is Beautiful... keep marching forward sweetheart. I pray the Lord will lift your spirit and give you the wherewithal to continue creating and sharing; and that you will continue to prosper. Your art is an extinction of your own Beauty! God Bless you and God Bless your day!

you speak for all creatives...especially the vulnerabilities that come with it...and you answered your own question at the end. But this is what is to be considered...not everyone has a passion (regardless of money) and less so those who actually are able to pursue their dreams. Art by design (no pun intended) is meant to be as is...the intrinsic value of art elevates any intelligent being to a place higher than achieved by anything else. Keep getting us there.

I cant even begin to imagine what you're feeling but please know that you are enough just as you are and your art is more than enough as it is! I look at mine (your art work) everyday and sigh at its beauty. I hope you can find the peace you're searching for. Take care of yourself! ❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏

Bethany, I've always admired your work. Not because its hyper realistic, but because of the passion and vulnerabilty you put into each and every peice. To me - your work is more than just a drawing. Your a superb artist, and like all artists you will likely over think things, but that can lead you to burn out and brain fuzz which doesn't help. Why not play in other mediums? have some fun - enjoy exploring new tools - take us all on this journey and lets see where this goes :)

I've never stopped to think about how ppl perceive my work. It doesn't matter...to me anyway. I understand that art is very much a luxury and I'm always in awe that ppl spend their hard earned money on my work. Because I know that, I put my all into my pieces...I don't get disappointed when my ornaments don't get a lot of likes online, I know ppl are going to buy them. I think too many artists spend too much time worrying. If business is good, then ride the wave, man. I just do my work and have faith that my clients will keep coming back. I do understand the burnout, though. Four of my dogs and my longest friend passed last year and wow...its taken me all of THIS year to recover. You make the world a more beautiful place, bring smiles and joy to ppl. Just do you ❤

I've just discovered you Bethany, and I'm so pleased - you're discussing topics very dear to my heart! I hope that you are working through these thoughts, and are riding the wave back up to enjoying being an artist again. I think the life of a creative is one of peaks and troughs. Wishing you well, Charlie x

Betheny, you are beautiful. The hyper realism of your art is a skill, an ability within you, that most people simply do not have. It’s beautiful, the way you perceive the light, textures, and colors of the animals. You truly love them and it shows through. I know that doesn’t change how you are feeling. Social media thieves so many people of happiness, just by it’s design. But please know that you are valued and we really enjoy your content:) You inspire many! ❤️🌸❤️🌸

1:43 - 1:54 "I feel like, just a few years ago, realistic art wasn't as popular as it is today, possibly because social media wasn't so well utilized as a marketing tool for artists." It may also have to do with the fact that society has become a lot more conservative in recent years, and people on the conservative end of the political spectrum often do not appreciate abstract art. Which isn't to say that all - or even most - people who only enjoy realistic art are conservative or anything like that, I'm just referring to general tendencies that I've observed in our society over the years. Great video, BTW, and your art is absolutely stunning! 😍 Very impressive!

Oh Bethany I want to applaud everything you have said here!!! SM kills hard work for shitty algorithms! Unless one is an artist themselves, no one can ever appreciate all those hours alone for a piece which gets a few seconds glance for many hours work!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

do you watch holly exley's videos? she has made a few videos recently about the same feelings of burnout and social media fatigue. i'm glad people are opening up about burnout and questioning social media's effects on not just mental health but our sense of purpose and how it's not a one size fits all solution for promoting art. it makes me hopeful that maybe there will be a return to blogging or some new form of slower, more intentional consumption of art. if you haven't watched holly's videos, i think they would really resonate with you.

Hi. I understand your dilemmas well ... I experience them anyway ... I came to the conclusion that the worst thing is to look at others, whether to follow them or compare them ... you know, in moments of doubt I experiment with my work. I do something upside down then, so far. please don't give up. you are too valuable for such a step. change something, or take a different breath somewhere ... but don't give up. with love and faith in you -your friend ev.ced.

Hi Bethany, Have up and down in a artist lifetime is totally normal, even the greatest and established artist went through this state of mind. When i see your work ,i 'm very impressed by the dedication, time, effort and more important the amount of love you gave for each of your artwork since you had start to post videos and drawings. About your burn out, maybe it's because you do all the job alone, the work of many people for only one person, the artjob, all the medias(youtube, social medias, answering questions ,posting images,etc..),doing the posters, the shipping,etc..find help maybe to your family,friends,etc..it's very hard to control every steps in a business alone.. About the Art approch,it is constant evolving, with age we saw things deeply ,we know better all the art tehcniques,we know better the world around them and better knwo our soul and mind too.. As creator we are explorer too ,you can do everything you want, testing new techniques like pencils drawing on watercolor, testing oils, sculpture, modelling, airbrushing, painting resin kit ,restoring painting/statues,etc.. Using photo references,is not a bad thing at all,in the past i reproduced everything i saw and like in magazines, books, another painters too,it teach me to draw,to paint textures(skins, anatomy, animals, wood, nature, except cars and buildings,i hate that, haha!)i have a lot of pleasure to do this, but i also draw without photo references too, only with my imagination.. The problem i think for realistic artist today is the competition is very hard with other medias, movies CGI,videogames,4K Tv ,4K smartphone,etc...who offered too amazing realistic views, looks for exemple "Unreal Engine graphics".. Who are the artist who inspired you in the past and continued to inspired you today ? For me,i start at age 6-7 with Hal Foster ,Burne Hoggarth,Tove Jansson,John Buscema,Franquin and continue with Jerome Bosh,René Hausman,Boris Vallejo,Franck Frazetta,Salvator Dali,Alan Lee,John Howe,Jean-Leon Gerôme,Comics and manga artist(RIP Kentaro Miura)and so much and so much.. All the artist,Painters,etc..we love , can help them all the time when we need to find again some energy and inspiration ! Remenber producing artwork is only a vaste exploration of our mind, and it will evolve as our artistics goals evolves,mutates,changes..now we have also so beautiful arttools to work with, only with colored drawing pencils, what a journey since we start drawing with some school colored pencils, only available to them from the supermarket, aha! Drawing, sculpting, airbrushing, painting are nothing else than a love storylife.. Always believe you're a kiwi from NZ,the accent, haircut, horses and green grass everywhere..ah my stunned mind again,lol..

So true! It’s a slippery slope that even the great masters struggled with as well. Creating for self or others. And is it possible to find that balance. Hang in there. And when it seems really overwhelming, remember to breath.

You have an absolutely wonderful ability to create a 3D realistic creation from laying down pigment on paper. If that isn’t magical nothing is. You ARE a creator and a very gifted one. Make no mistake about that. If you need a break take as long as you need to get your mojo back. We’ve mostly have all been there at one time and understand. You are loved.

I often think of this also. Do you think that creating for smaller communities could be part of the answer? Sharing your art with real people in real local communities, so that you are not competing with the entire world for a corner of the art space on social media, but are fulfilling your calling as an artist in the actual corner of the world that you live, and making that place a better place..? Some thoughts. Thank you for sharing yours

If you're established as you are do you still feel the strong need for social media? There are many ways around this. Make sure you don't loose sight of the fact that millions of people would give anything to have our skills and for us it comes naturally, keep smiling x

Being an artist is a curse rather than a blessing. People talk about how the arts are important in our society but creatives remain poor and unable to make a living doing what they love. 😥
