Chescaleigh this is perfect! How are you, beautiful? I'm TOTALLY making a post about this today!

chescaleigh [Disclaimer: I'm an outspoken critic of gender feminism and social censorship] So long as we can all recognize that any of us can be the snail or the caterpillar in any given situation, and that the point should be to help each other rather than pointing out that someone is a snail or caterpillar, I'm happy to endorse this video :-)
@chescaleigh9 жыл бұрын
cmatrix4761 Well...you watched the video right? Cause that would explain why I said "sometimes you're the snail and sometimes you're the caterpillar" ;)

I would love to see this as a children's book. I would totally buy this for either my children (on the unlikely chance I decide to have kids) or my sisters' children (on the more likely chance that at least one of the three of them will eventually have children). In fact, I'd probably make it my standard baby-shower gift. This is amazing and adorable and everyone needs to learn about this as early as possible so we can start changing the world. :)

I would also love for this to be in book form, because I know I’m going to have children at some point and this is an awesome metaphor.

Fantastic video I will admit that for a while now I have struggled with the term "privilege", not because I don't see that it exists just I was unable to appreciate its role in my own life. As you said in another video privilege are those things we don't have to think about. Seeing this gives me greater insight into the silent privileges I take for granted each day as well as makes me regret some positions I have taken in the past. Thanks for making such a difficult topic so approachable.
@chescaleigh9 жыл бұрын
+Mark Flavin thanks for watching and enjoying! you aren't the only one who's had trouble with that word, i think when it's framed as something we've all experienced it makes it a bit easier, which was the goal of this video. thanks again!

+chescaleigh thank you for having the courage to put it out there. Going through your channel I really appreciate the time you have spent sharing your perspective in such a humanizing and humorous manner. It has encouraged me to seek out more opportunities to share my own thoughts and hopefully support the ultimate goal wherein videos like this and campaigns like black lives matter aren't necessary. Again thank you so much sharing I have learned a lot from your work and look forward to learning more.

Fantastic. I'm gonna start posting this in the comments whenever I see people being fools about privilege and oppression. One thing does not cancel out another. We can appreciate someone's struggle, and acknowledge our privilege where it exists, without it minimizing our own challenges. I also can't wait to share this with my daughter.
@amandamurphy50653 жыл бұрын
I love this! I’m a teacher, and this is something I can see using in my classroom. I know other teachers would too but some who teach elementary school are concerned about the fact the she says “crap” and talks about “hooking up,” which I also noted when thinking about sharing with my own young children. If the next video was a little more kid friendly in that way, that would be amazing. Still, great video! Thanks for putting it together!
@robertmcmanus91854 жыл бұрын
This is pretty much a perfect cartoon. There is no judgement; only insight. The doors are wide open and it invites understanding as opposed to creating division. Nothing short of brilliant! Thank you. Many educators could use this with their students to help them fully understand the difficulties other people experience and I'm sure it would lead to profound and meaningful discussions. I'd love to see a version with the word "crap" removed, and the hook up with the ladybug toned down, so it can be used in primary classes with young children. This version would work in many communities even with young kids, but, teachers need to be sensitive to the needs and boundaries of their individual communities and in some communites these minor issues might cause problems. Thank you for this. THIS is how we make the world a better place. A+

This was such a fantastic video! I am disabled and as soon as the snail couldn't get under the fence, I felt that. Both from places not being accessible and from people just not understanding. Also the illustrations and narration were excellent! (and subtitles help me a lot with concentration and stuff so thanks for adding them too)

Another good analogy of this would be a mental condition, like anxiety (which is where I thought you were originally going). People who have never experienced anxiety do not understand why some things can just be ridiculously difficult to do for others, because that particular thing is not difficult for them; like, going to a party. A great little fable for remembering that everyone is different and deals with different strengths and obstacles though.
@heehee69459 жыл бұрын
She basically already covered that by saying that you don't always know what people are going through..
@cantankeruz9 жыл бұрын
Anna HD yea, but it wouldn't hurt to be a little more specific with mental illnesses and the wide variety of them. A lot of people don't understand them, even if they have one
@chescaleigh9 жыл бұрын
Amanda Riviera cantankeruz I used "have a disability" as a catch all, but specifically mentioning mental illness would've been a stronger choice. my apolgoies for the oversight. i don't have much experience talking about mental illness, but it's something i'm interested in learning more about, especially since there are a lot of misconceptions and stigma surrounding mental health
@amandariviera9 жыл бұрын
I wasn't trying to say you excluded it at all. I was just highlighting it as a specific example. I honestly think this little fable is something kids in modern society should hear. It sends an easy to understand message on perspective and personal context. :)
@chescaleigh9 жыл бұрын
Amanda Riviera ah thanks for clarifying. I really wanted this to apply to lots of different people, so I'm glad you mentioned mental illness as one area where this story applies. I'd love to see this video in classrooms, here's hoping we can create more and do just that! thanks for the support and feedback ;)
@BrandonPilcher9 жыл бұрын
This is a refreshingly nuanced fable about privilege because it acknowledges how it can be relative depending on the situation. The caterpillar clearly had the privilege when it came to getting under the fence, but not so much when it came to shoe-shopping. Unfortunately a lot of privilege discussions seem to overlook that in favor of fixating on situations corresponding to traditional hierarchies (e.g. white>black or male>female), as if the privileges never reversed in any situation.
@chadphriday1979 жыл бұрын
I like the message, especially since no one was shouting "death to all caterpillars" or "yes all snails" There was a powerful lesson about perspective and co-operation. Beautifully well done.

Then maybe they can have a discussion about different privileges and non-privileges they personally have. IDK, in my perfect world that would happen.

Megan My dream is to create a whole series of animated videos and get them into classrooms. We have to start having these conversations as early as possible so that it's easier to have the tough ones later on. Many times we're having conversations about racism, sexism, privilege etc at 201 and 301 level but the people we're talking to haven't had 101! It's really hard to understand complex issues when you haven't had the fundamentals, so I'm trying my best to develop content that covers the basics so we can have more productive conversations in the future. Thanks for enjoying and for the encouragement. Here's hoping this leads to more!

great message, I like how everyone can relate to this because everyone has their struggles and challenges no matter what, some definitely more than others but it's nice you didn't portray anyone as the villain or fully privileged (if that even exists)
@chescaleigh9 жыл бұрын
Making sure that no one was the "bad guy" and that lots of different privileges were acknowledge was a very conscious decision. So glad you enjoyed and appreciated it! ;)
@cherubicnerd9 жыл бұрын
Hugh Jass if someone's straight,male,white,rich and able-minded/bodied then that person is "fully privileged." it's not as rare as you'd like to think. is my example "painting people as villains"? sorry if my comment's negative,Chescaleigh. the person just seemed like they were creating some kind of defense or excuse...
@chescaleigh9 жыл бұрын
cherubicnerd don't apologize, i don't see anything wrong with your comment. "fully privileged" is kind of a clunky way to describe someone, but in terms of "painting people as villains" i interpreted it to mean that neither of the characters was the "bad guy" and their friendship was intact at the end. it's true, straight white rich able bodied cis men are at the top of the pyramid when it comes to privilege, but i want them to enjoy and understand this content too.
@Rikiwizard9 жыл бұрын
cherubicnerd "the person" wasn't creating some defense of excuse at all. It's just that I'm sick of seeing straight cis white "fully privileged" males getting portrayed as villains when the innocent ones are fully supportive of equality...the "fully privileged" individuals are not fully privileged if they're seen as bad people in the eyes of others. They're seen as people that perpetuate rape culture, unfit to babysit, pedophiles, misogynists etc. I really hate being seen as any of those things when I'm not... and many people aren't deserving of that automatic pigeon hole-ing. I'm not even straight cis white male myself. I'm mixed race, bi or gay (i don't even know) and male and it feels like I can't fit into any community at all, but I still get seen as the enemy. I mean this video just shows that everyone has their problems, even people that are seemingly perfect in the eyes of society. Some people definitely have more problems than others but it's really not fair blaming someone that was born into what they are

It indeed helps so much sometimes to explain something by using analogies, stepping away for a minute from the intricate delusions our society has created and substituting them with something as clear and obvious as having a shell. Besides this video is so kids-friendly which I think is the best part of it for if we teach these things to kids we can be sure that we are going to construct a fairer world in the future. And of course the way this video is animated and narrated makes it even more amazing!

Chescaleigh I love you so much. This was a great video and I love your podcast as well. I know you and Patrick talked about not envying someone else's life or abilities, but I really wish I can explain these complex social problems in a non-threatening, non aggressive way just like you.
