If you want your city to feel European I believe the 2 most important things are : 1. make the city circular, from the inside out. Historically European cities have grown radially outwards from a city center. 2. Make the roads organic. As the city grows outwards it grows as needed, meaning it has a very organic feel as to how the roads are placed and all. Bonus... Having a highway cut through your city is the opposite of european. Highways were built around cities as either ring roads for bigger cities or just pass-through highspeed roads. Your city feels (as of now) preplanned and very grid based. This is my personal opinion
@flyingpiggie9796 жыл бұрын
Claudio Jaramillo The grid isn’t alien to Europe. Even the Romans used grid systems, and it had been used in a lot of “new” European towns and cities from as far a back as the 12-1300’s. Even the Georgian town I grew up in was built right from the start in the 1600’s with a right angled grid design.
@SkateGeneva6 жыл бұрын
Blinkysaurus Rex most of the places that did use a grid based design from the beginning were very flat places (the Netherlands for example). Not a small city in the middle of a valley like this one
@OkstadOo3 жыл бұрын
Necroposting, but grids aren't alien to Europe as said. In Norway (which has a geography that looks very much like this map) several cities have a section called "Kvadraturen", due to their grid based layout. Oslo, Kristiansand and Namsos all have districts featuring heavy gridding.

"Nydal" in swedish is "new-valley" and I think it's a similar meaning in norwegian. In swedish it would be pronounced like "Nü-dall", not sure how to explain and I don't know if you want to pronounce it the english or swedish way :) I'm very excited for this series either way :D

Reading "Nydal": sounds norwegian. Sees the landscape: looks norwegian. Not very generic so far, very norwegian biase. xD Also i can't really imagine what a generic european police would look like. They look very different wherever you go. I mean, Germany (except for bavaria) started using blue instead the old green colour 15 years ago, to make it more easy to identify police all across Europe. But you still need to decide on the design of one country though. Can't wait for episode 2! :)

Also: Is there a chance this means "New Valley"? Sounds like that to me. Would be a bit ironic for an island city. :D

I've recently started and have created a "testing" city/map to learn how to play and create elements, examine assets, mods, etc... that I've seen used and want to incorporate. I hope my imagination hasn't gotten rusty from lack of need, so it's time to let it roam around up there for concepts and gain inspiration from the cities I'm seeing. ;-)

Looking nice so far. Can't wait to see what you gonna do with this map. One suggestion : In Fine Road Tool enable the "Change max turn angle for more realistic tram tracks turns" option. This will remove those ugly sharp tram track turns you can see at 13:07 or 16:22. Of course this also means trams won't be able to make those turns. You can play with the angle if 90° is too drastic for your needs.
@strictoaster6 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that was a thing! Thanks for the heads up :D PS: I've noticed that the "Straight slope" feature of Fine Road Tools is not working properly. Are you aware of any mods (or any recent game updates) that may be resetting it? I have to constantly check/unceck that box to get straight slopes. Bsquikle told me this is happening to him as well.

I'm enjoying this already :) since this is a relatively large city surrounded entirely by water, historically it must have been primarily accessed by boat, so there's great potential for a historic harbour district, and the inevitable modern apartment blocks which spring up on them in later years. It's also in a really good place strategically to be a defensive city or stronghold for the same reason, so there might even be scope to make the city centre part of a medieval walled city, maybe like the Visby city wall in Sweden, which even has a similarly short Scandinavian name With so much room for characteristic features I'm looking forward to watching the city develop :)

This looks promising although i don't get how you can even create a "generic european city" since Europe is so diverse. I'd say the theme of this map is Swiss/southern-German. Same goes for the "generic" emergency vehicles : Europe is not a country unlike the US, so you won't get a generic type of vehicle (for example French police cars are white, German ones are green, Spanish ones are dark blue, etc.). Anyway if you're going for some sort of mix of different European regions then so be it, it can be fun.
