Instead of giving the map one name for the city you could give it a county name because its not just one city, its many towns and villages. Than you would give each town/city its own name. Some counties in California are: Sonoma County, Almeda County, Ventura County, Tulare County, Tehama County. Or you could call it Marble County after the mountain.

This map reminds me of the transitions from the coast in Orange County, through Riverside and the San Bernardino Mountains, and then like you to Barstow. When he was talking about how he doesn’t think it looks super realistic I was like “it’s totally realistic! I live there!” Lol

Holy moly this map looks soooooo good. For awhile I’ve wanted to do a project where it combines ‘the country’ with small towns and just gradually turns to suburbs and then a city. I really just love the scope you can achieve in this game but I realize you have to make some sacrifices like not going asset crazy to make it happen. Can’t wait to see how this develops!

This series sounds very promising. My favorite series to date has been Flabaliki's Sedona. It was a huge map with a main city and various smaller towns located in Arizona. This map kind of looks like Greece and lends itself to isolated settlements, rural areas and more built-up towns. Looking forwards to this!

I can't wait to see this series. I think it'll be great with the addition Skylines Industries. It would neat to see a bunch of interconnected towns all producing different goods and shipping it off to the main city cargo harbor. In your desert area you good produce sand, ship it to another town to make glass or something and then to the main city for export. Awesome, Skylines needed this DLC.

Perfect project idea many have thought of. One KZbinr Sam Burr has done a good job himself before industries. I think for many of us we have desired this from the good old days with SimCity series. Blending base game with sandbox and all it's inherent issues is nothing new, but with the new DLC new hope to the idea has risen and it is all due to those countless creators as always. We simple fans and players help drive and elevate this game as well. @Twenty I thank you for doing this project and wish you well!

I'm running a fairly beefy rig and it has a hard time when there's a ton of mods and assets loaded. Like he said, it kinda takes the fun out of playing the game when you focus so much on detail and miss out on the actual gameplay.
@knockshinnoch19506 жыл бұрын
A really impressive map- really captures that arid barren desert look. Like the concept of minimum mods/assets in order to make the map accessible to all. Looking forward to seeing how this build develops. I agree that it's good to reconnect with the base game once in a while- for me it's during a new dlc launch. I clear out all "essential must have" the mods and assets that I hardly use and play vanilla for a couple of days until everything settles down. I avoid the hysteria of the forums and the "broken game- I hate CO" brigade who drive me crazy.

I added it as a reply to a comment, but I would recommend taking a look at Northern California for inspiration. Santa Rosa, Napa, Santa Cruz, and Oakland would fit this terrain perfectly. The highway on the coast is a perfect mimic of the beautiful CA Hwy 1 that runs along the coast.
@slimshady84086 жыл бұрын
Check out my comments bro. Definitely not north of Marin so I would say CenCal only. I have driven, flown, backpacked, hiked, biked, glided all up and down the entire West Coast from Tip of Baja, to Northern BC, extensively. You are very close and I might give you East Bay, but I'd still argue that only a few parts of Central Cali / SoCal are a PERFECT match. Still, +1 to you!

I need to give you some thanks. Why? Because I've been inspired by various creators in Cities: Skylines, and I've tried so hard to try and be as detailed as them, but I just don't have it in me. You have been my favorite content creator of Cities: Skylines, and now I have the passion to make cities again, because you've made me realize that I don't need to be super-detailed to build a realistic city. I can't wait until the map save game will come out, because I want to get started so bad.
@Serentropic6 жыл бұрын
I was a little caught off guard when you pitched the premise at first, but I'm really excited to see it start coming together. I originally intended to play vanilla, moved into french vanilla, and finally fell down the mod spiral when I saw the amazing things everyone else was creating. It's been great, but I almost immediately run into FPS issues and the need for spreadsheets to keep track of all the mods. With Strictoaster doing Nydal with reduced prop use, and you focusing on vanilla assets here, I'm optimistic about learning techniques to maintain performance without tanking aesthetics. I was really impressed with how good you managed to make the city in the Industries video look entirely in vanilla; it really goes to show, just *knowing* what makes a city look real matters just as much as the tools you use, and you really do know. I'm sure this project will be great! Hopefully the improved game performance will make real-time content easier for you to produce, too.

Yes, I'm late to this video, but it's the first bunch of free time I have on my hands. I can clearly see the bits of GTA V inspiration around the map, especially with the coastal highway. The section where the forest and desert meet isn't as unrealistic as you may think, as the mountains surrounding the forest would likely trap some of the moisture in, allowing the forest to thrive there, and the desert is more open, which would allow more sun to get in and the moisture would easily escape, making it hard for any vegetation to survive. I really like seeing these projects where it's not focused on a big city. I like big cities, but projects like these allow for so many opportunities, a sizeable town/city, a few small towns located around the map, a couple of houses on their own, a farm or ranch. This is the start of a brilliant project, and I can't wait to binge watch the rest which I'm going to do right now. Also, with the California wild fires lately, it would be nice to see some forest fire services, like a small heliport that can be there to protect the forests as well as a few watch towers in the forests.

Honestly I live by the mantra of build with what you use.... I keep a fairly mosdest mod count, and a decent asset count, but I don't choke myself. Basically what I do is I have 2 collections; my Essentials collections (with my much needed props and mods I can't live without) and my "add-ons" collection. The Add-ons collection is basically where I put any assets I need for whatever idea I have that day, but I try and keep it to a minimum. But very importantly I try and remove any assets I didn't use after a play session. It honestly helps. Because my Essentials has a total of about 700 items (mostly props I can't live without like a variety of trees, decals, and basic props and buildings) and my add-ons collection has 100-150 based on which save I use.

Maybe I’m late to this series but I don’t think that where the forest and desert meets is a particularly bad thing. If you look at mountain ranges along the pacific coast you will see that the mountains have a dry side and a wet side. And the forest usually ends abruptly.

Your map location for your city and its proximity to the mountains reminds me of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I definitely think you should go around on Google Earth and find inspiration for the suburban areas around your small compact core. I see some spots where you could create nestled neighborhoods within the coastal mountains, so you can stick to the theme of a valley city like Pittsburgh, where planners had to get creative for the demand for urban sprawl.

Based on California? A small town in the forest could be some word relating to the trees, and then “City.” Cedar City, Redwood City, Sequoia City, etc. There are a few “City” towns in California and elsewhere in the western US (Nevada City, California for instance). I also thought of “Montana City” If it’s near mountains because IIRC montaña is mountain in Spanish (Mountain City) but historically it could have gotten corrupted to just “Montana City.” Not unheard of to have towns named after other states given how there’s Nevada City in both California and Montana, Kansas City in Missouri, Virginia City in Montana, etc.

Gran Canaria is an island at The Canary Islands (Spain), off the West Coast of Africa (I live on a small coastal town called Arinaga). To be fair, some parts of the map, the desert ones, remind me of Fuerteventura, one of the other islands. So I won't get angry if you call it New Fuerteventura or New Arinaga.
