Season 01 : Pacific Northwest
Minisode : White Death : Wellington, Washington
Wellington is the site of the deadliest avalanche in US history. People just wanted to take a train from on place to the next. Unfortunately, nature had other plans.

In my mid-twenties I drove from New Hampshire to Washington State in 3 days. It was one of the dumbest things I have ever done. As I was cresting the Cascade Mountains on Route 90 in my Dodge mini-van, I fell asleep. I think I had a guardian angel that night because the loud honking of an 18-wheeler I was about to drift into suddenly woke me and I was able to avert a catastrophic accident. I know this doesn't have to do with freezing to death, but every time I hear someone talk about the Cascades, I think of that stupid decision to try to drive 3000 miles in 3 days.

I got pinned by like 6 feet of snow that fell from a neighbors house (old Victorian with no snow-breaks) we were shoveling snow off of; I was, no matter how hard I tried, unable to move, encased in compressed, semi-melted snow. I had my friend and little brother to help pull me out, but a couple more feet of snow would squished me for sure. Snow’s no joke when it piles up on you lol

That sounds terrifying! I'm happy you got out safe! Being suffocated by snow in my opinion is up there with the worst kind of death. Like being stuck in quicksand. It allows for you to be completely coherent awake and aware of the fact that you're slowly dying. I was once stuck in a type of quicksand during a pop-up thunderstorm which caused a flash flood and I remember looking down and realizing I wasn't that deep only up to my knees but acknowledging the fact that it was going to take a while but it would be just enough time for the weather to pass the skies to clear and people just start coming out again and when they would start showing up to where I was would most likely be when I would be taking my last breath. Then I decided no way in hell was I going out like that. And plus I had my at the time toddler strapped in his car seat up in the car not far away. I couldn't leave him in there scared and alone. Not today Satan not today. Lol. By the grace of God or something more powerful than myself I was able to get the strength to jar myself loose and it took about 20 minutes but I climbed out only to emerge on the banks of this Creek completely and utterly exhausted and it took another 20 minutes just to pull myself up and start crawling towards my vehicle. Terrifying seems to be an understatement when it comes to knowing you're using every single ounce of energy you have left plus some energy that you don't to try to stay alive knowing that you may not succeed. That is only what I could imagine is like to be under the snow in an avalanche. I concur, snow is no joke.

Yesterday I toured the area where the town of Wellington once stood; saw the hill the avalanche plunged down; visited both portals of the Old Cascade Tunnel; and strolled through what remains of the snowshed that was built in 1911. I toured with a historian who knows every detail of the Great Northern Railroad and the events of March 1910. - In your video, you encapsulated the story of the avalanche perfectly, down to every last fact. Well done! And Thank You. 👍🏼😀

When I was 15 I was taking the train from Seattle back to Vancouver Washington where I lived at the time. The train stopped and got stuck on the track and it was hours before they fixed the problem. My parents were freaking out cuz they had been waiting for me at the train station and we ended up sitting in the train on the tracks for about 4 hours and it was snowing heavier than I'd ever seen it snow in that area before. It was kind of scary, but I'm glad I didn't know about this I would have been petrified.

I can’t think of too many things more terrifying than being trapped in a train, with a mountain falling on top of you. I’m from Manitoba and this story had me feeling the cold, dark, suffocating they would have felt. Thought theirs would have been a wetter snow and it would have been heavier than the cold snow we get that drifts because it’s kind of fluffy. But speaking of drifting snow how about how it gets down to zero visibility on the highways on the prairies. Scary driving for sure. And worse being outside in it when the windchill cuts into you

So very true I was shoveling snow around my car and I was only up to my waist in snow but it was so difficult to move it's like concrete. Good story and good reminder I remember hearing about this when I was young. If people don't believe that it'll snow a foot an hour when I was little we live in Tahoe and we had a blizzard in two days two story houses were buried and we got a ride to school in the snowplow I'll never forget that

The story is reminding me of a small town just a hop skip and jump away named sulfur springs. It sits literally on the banks of the Mississippi. It once was a hub of activity during the civil war especially and also served as an army barracks for some time. But it's most notably known as being the site of the worst train wreck in Missouri. I personally feel that the land it sits on and the surrounding land is cursed as it seems that not much happens there but when it does, it's always tragic and usually violent. I personally feel this stems from some kind of slaughter of sorts of the native people during the pioneer settlement, but I have nothing to back that up with other than finding numerous remnants of indigenous and Native American settlements in the area and my gut instinct. When I lived in the area I would have nightmares of a literate porthole to hell on the Earth on which my abode was built. (And I don't even believe in hell!) It definitely has the same sinister vibes as the location in this episode.

Idk) woefully underprepared for the storm coupled with the wind gusts that wreaked havoc on residential streets like mine. Damn snow piled up so intensely and so quickly there was a point no one in my apt complex could get out the front door without an avalanche pouring inside the lobby lol. We eventually had plows come and they did a righteous job to the point where we had literal pyramids of snow all over the neighborhood. We had snow before but that specific storm was my welcome to real winter weather. Sorry for the ramble , got nostalgic

Jesus Christ himself hated religion. Wearing leaves to cover their nakedness in the Garden of Eden was the first act of religion--the attempt to be found favorable to God through one's own efforts. It was a substitute for the asked-for obedience. Best recognize, organized religion is usually a tool for evil, a result of evil, a place for evil to hide in plain sight.
