A new baby Orangutan at Chester Zoo for mum Sarikei and dad Willie
In this video we get adorable close up animal footage of the new 4 day old baby orangutan - a critically endangered Bornean Orangutan
The baby is seen sleeping with his / her mother Sarikei in a hammock
Later in the video Sarikeis older son Tombol, who until recently had his mother to himself! climbs up a very high pole where his mother and baby sibling are resting, and seems to be bringing a blanket to them to shade themselves from the midday sun
Or does Sarakei just take it off him ? - it's hard to tell but we like the first scenario the best!

The newborn Bornean baby orangutan featured in this video is only 4 few days old and was born early on 31st August 2023 to Mother Sarikei and Father Willie
Sarikei is an experienced mother orangutan who has had previous offspring including her son Tombol who lives with her and the rest of the Bornean Orangutans at Chester Zoo
At the time of recording this video Chester Zoo had announced the birth only days earlier and had yet to reveal the name and gender of the critically endangered newborn baby orangutan
Chester Zoo Baby Orangutan
Chester Zoo is has a very successful record of Orangutan births at the zoo and most of the Orangutan Mothers are able to rear their own young without the assistance of zoo staff, this is largely due to the expert care and facilities the World Class Zoo provides for the animals.
The current animal population have had valuable experience with babies and have observed relatives caring for young, using this learning and experience to enable them to rear their own offspring
Birth of critically endangered orangutan at Chester Zoo
Bornean Orangutans have been considered critically endangered since 2016 with an only an estimated 100,000 left in the wild. They are seriously in danger of extinction which makes the birth of this new baby orangutan very special indeed

I think Tombol gave the blanket to his mother. She didn't snatch it, nor did Tombol try and hang onto it. Sarikei seems so relaxed with her baby. I hope her older son gets some motherly attention, too. He is still young. Lovely video.

Looked to me like the child brought the blanket because he was using it and wanted to visit, but that he completely understood mom and baby needing it more & easily surrendered it to mom. Then she thanked him by leaving blanket up a bit for him to still see her and baby before he left and sheseemed to take his hand with..thanks, I love you. AT least this is my interpretation

It's amazing when you realize that this being has so much in common with human beings. Levels of compassion and love love that even some humans don't possess. Saraiki is a wonderful mother. She allowed her son some time to see the baby, but moved him along when it was time. I love that these orangutans feel safe enough to give birth more frequently than in the wild. Always a happy occurrence and a boost to this critically endangered species numbers. ❤ 🦧

Mom's 40 years old, not 56! At age 56, if she became a mother, it would be irresponsible of the zoo because she probably wouldn't have had time to raise him. The baby is wonderful, and the mother always keeps it close to the breast and he eats often, so he is strong and well-nourished. She went to the hammock to be alone, and the son misses his mom and is curious about the baby. I hope mom takes time for her son, too, because he still needs it. Beautiful view of caring mom with new baby.

Tombol is pretty smart, the sack was a distraction so he could see the baby. Mom was on to him though and said, ok thx for the cover now go about your business and get away from the baby!
