Sonata Arctica has always managed to find this weird sweet-spot with the lyrics being very dark, set to cheerful music, and the end result being this strangely melancholic yet uplifting feeling. Cloud Factory does this quite perfectly. So damn pumped for this album, as a long-time fan!

I loved Ecliptica for its speed and pure power metal. I loved Silence for advancing everything that Ecliptica was, with more emotion. I loved Winterheart's Guild for its melodies and more advanced lyrics. I loved Reckoning Night for being a perfect combination of storytelling and music. I loved Unia for its dark riffs and its more progressive approach. I loved The Days of Grays for incorporating more instrumentality while keeping the perfect vocals. I loved Stones Grow Her Name for its old school sound, yet experimental build. I wonder what this new album will bring me?

FINALLY....FINALLY, I'm tired of all those people complaining, i've been following sonata since the start and never have I been deceived, yes there are some albums i like less (Stones grow her name and Unia were my least favorite) But even there, to me ''okay'' by sonata is higher than anything other bands can bring me ! I love the fact they try new things instead of just doing the same damn album over and over ! All what you said is what everyone should think.

***** There are no "real fans". People should be open minded, and think for themselves whether they like something or not. However, if they don't enjoy something, they aren't just dropped from the fan base. They still like (love) the band, but maybe don't like a couple of songs, or the general direction they are heading. They should be allowed to voice their opinion. Also, if "real fans" are the ones that enjoy _everything_, then I'm sorry, that is brainwashed mode, and definitely something you should avoid. Sorry for the wall of text, but I got really tired of "real fans" arguments over and over and over again.
@kmacgregor63612 жыл бұрын
@@MoonTiger88 It's how the "voicing opinion" part happens that rubs me the wrong way. There's "hmm, this style isn't for me, oh well" (which, really, doesn't require any voicing of opinions) and then there's "Wahhhh, they're doing something different from what they always used to do. This sucks! I like it when they just keep doing the same thing over and over! Come on, SA, you should be pleasing ME! It's all about meeeeeee!!!"

Javo Feroz Nah the worst thing an artist can do is write bad songs. I wouldn't care that Sonata Arctica changed styles if they wrote songs as good as they used to. I can't think of a single chorus I've liked in the last ten years or so with the exception of Flag in the Ground.

And from my standpoint wouldn't that be the worst thing they could do? :) And yeah it's all subjective I just don't hear any choruses in their new stuff that sound good or are creative from my stand point. To each his own I guess. I just wish they were more" to my own".

Sonata gets the most high praises and the harshest criticisms. Why? Because genius always does. They are different. They steer away from the mediocre, they push out of the genre-limiting restraints, and they simply do lots of different things. And despite all this band has been through, they keep pushing ahead with new ideas and directions each album. And I absolutely love them for it. As far as this track goes, I dig the song a lot. It's not my favorite, not my least favorite, but then again, Sonata songs always mature after a few listens. It's got a happy melody with a deeper meaning and that's really cool. I think it's a good tune, and I bet it will be a lot of fun live. Whether you like it or not is pretty irrelevant, and that's what's great about this band: they're going to do it regardless. And THAT is what creating something is all about.
@xtrife5710 жыл бұрын
or maybe because they obviously changed their style a lot all of a sudden. Nothing genius about it, it's only normal that they'd lose a lot of old fans and gain new ones. Also they didn't "steer away from the mediocre" because they were never mediocre, they were great, mediocrity isn't what made them famous was it? and getting that initial fame is probably the hardest part in such a career.
@r0ckbass10 жыл бұрын
Cloud Xtrife i disagree on this "all of a sudden" style change. all of the early albums have strong rock influence, with power metal undertones that they let flare up occasionally, just like the new ones. i don't know what albums people are listening to that are straight up power metal that they claim to miss so much. sonata has never been straight across the board just one genre. even on the older albums, like Silence, listen to "last drop falls", "the end of this chapter", "peacemaker" etc. where's the powermetal there? and when i said 'they steer away from the mediocre', i was meaning that they don't do what's expected of them every album, so you kinda missed what i was trying to say there. i've been listening to this band for a long time now, and i just don't see this change people are talking about. just look at the last few albums. unia was unlike any album up to that point, the songs were complex and crazy, but now is many people's favorite one to date.. then the days of grays came out, melancholy and more simple, with a new guitarist, but still catchy and really strong. then stones grow her name, which was just a fun album overall. tony writes songs based on how he's feeling at that certain time, and those mood and taste changes are apparent. the 2 newest singles that i've heard sound a lot more like "old" sonata than new.
@Caleeb3410 жыл бұрын
Cloud Xtrife Sudden? tell me, which one of their albums has the same style as the last one?
@xtrife5710 жыл бұрын
rockbass Sudden, as in Unia and so on. On every album before unia, every band member sounded/played like the master of its own instrument, up until Unia, Days of Grays, etc. I'm a musician and i can tell you, theres not much ''complex'' stuff going on in the later albums, unless the wordr you were looking for was "weird" or ''inconsistent''. And lately the whole band basically just plays chords and ambient sounds so that Tony can do his thing. It really is all about tony now. And sorry, by "steer away from the mediocre" i thought you meant they steered away from their older style, which you thought was mediocre. Caleeb! If two albums sounded the same, one of them would probably be redundant. We can both agree that none sounded exactly the same, but up until unia, they just added to what was already present in the last one. Unia was the biggest change, because it didnt exactly add, it mostly changed elements.

Tony is singing to aspiring songwriters about writing and making albums. The Cloud Factory is a place where Tony and the band are currently trapped in for songwriting. In the factory they are chained and trapped to crank out albums that the fans want. The band works hard to please the fans but the albums are never enough. Sonata will never be "free" from the complaining fans of the Cloud Factory. Every band goes through the Cloud Factory and some may never get out. I hope Sonata Arctica can break out of the Cloud Factory and begin making albums that they are passionate about making instead of making albums for the whining fans...only for them to continue to whine. In all seriousness, I'm really loving these two songs from the new album \m/ I'm really enjoying it! Whether they made this album to please fans or not, everything is sounding great! Can't wait to listen to the rest of the album. Yours Truly, A Pleased Fan

I'm just reading through the comments and being glad that I discovered Sonata Arctica fairly recently. I don't have the same mindset as people who were there at the very beginning. While it isn't necessarily bad to have a preference, I find older fans seem to be more hesitant about allowing the bands they love to experiment and broaden their horizons. I'm of the same opinion with Nightwish. I love their older stuff with Tarja, but Imaginaerum was one of my favourite albums of all time and that was with the singer that most Nightwish fans seem bitter about, Anette. Now they've got Floor Jensen and I still like them just as much as previously. Maybe this is just pointless rambling, but I do believe that bands do need to evolve in order to stay relevant in today's music industry. If you take a band that is the same over album after album, the sound eventually gets boring. You know what to expect. Listening to each song becomes a bore. Similar to how Dragonforce had several albums that were literally almost exactly the same thing -- Fantastical lyrics, ridiculously long guitar solos that abused the hell out of the wah pedals, rinse and repeat for 7+ minutes at a time. -- And I am a fan of Dragonforce. I think they're better now that they've changed their sound though. Marc Hudson has only done one album so far but hopefully he'll help the band thrive off more than Guitar Hero 3 players. ...Okay, I'm still talking. I'll stop now. Rant over.

You win the award "Best comment of the year"!! I totally agree with you. I've loved Sonata for years, and I also loved Nightwish when Tarja was the lead singer. But I don't have anything against Anette or Floor. I think it's good for bands to experiment with their music and try new things. Not everything can sound the same, that would be boring. Like when HIM came out with Screamworks, everyone was really disappointed, while I loved it, because it was different. Whenever a band comes out with a new album, people freak out and think it's bad and different, but please, answer me this: Find two albums of the same band that are identical.
@Zayle710 жыл бұрын
Well I agree with you. Those people who like the older stuff should stay at that (like I'll do. Don't like Stone grows her name and as far as i heard this album too) But it's okay. Every bands change their style a little bit and it's their right to do this. I'm not forced to hear it :-) Those who like this album: Enjoy it :) Loved Tarja and Anette. Floor isn't my taste. But every human has a other taste. That's life :-) PS: Sorry for my bad english lol, isn't my native language.

I agree and disagree. Tony has stated before that during their glory days, people started labeling them as 'power metal' whereas Sonata were just doing their own thing at the time. In those days, Tony pulled much influence from Stratovarious and it greatly showed. The 1999-2006 albums were what made them truly shine and put them on the map today as yet another Finnish feat. I'm not saying that their prog albums were necessarily bad. They just weren't too engaging. Power of One, White Pearl Black Oceans, Wolf and Raven. One listen got you hooked. You didn't even need to be a fan of the genre to grasp the beautiful melodies and original composition. Unia, DoG and SGHN just didn't have too many memorable pieces. Especially when Symphony X, Dream Theater, Seventh Wonder, etc.. have done it so much better. If Unia had been the bands 1st release, they'd have been nowhere near the level they are today. All *IMO*. Btw, leave Dragonforce out of this. lol. Rhapsody, Dragonland and many others follow this power metal formula and it works just fine.

The problem is: Some band releases and album, it's awesome. They keep releasing albums with more or less the same sound and artistic scheme. People say "meh, you guys gotta do something new, it's always the same" Some band releases and album, it's awesome. They keep releasing albums, each one with its own style. People say "meh, you guys were better before, your music isn't as good anymore" At the end of the day, someone will always be disappointed no matter what you do. This is art, they do what they want and there is no scientifical reason to say "this is good" or "this is bad". If you like it, nice! If you don't, there are plenty of bands out there, go and listen to another's music.

I've been a fan of Sonata Arctica for quite some time and I'm of the opinion that sometimes there are songs that some people don't like and some others do like. I mean Days of Grays was good but seemed suddenly very moody and heavy compared to their previous albums - then along came Stones Grow Her Name and it was radically different, very upbeat with acoustic elements (such as that very amusing banjo) and more melodic than before. The thing is - every album may be a little different from before what each has their own identity and that's what makes them great. It's like having different bands all contained in one great package with extra Tony Kakko. And who here doesn't love that?

hmm. better than I expected. still lacks the subtlety of Kakko's best, too many abstract concepts and clichés with too little to ground them, but the prosody is hella deft and the depth of knowledge of Europe's occult Goddess traditions is actually impressive.

***** Tuomas is a great composer, but as a lyricist nowhere near Tony's level (in fact the only two albums where I like his lyrics at all are Dark Passion Play and the latest one). what I said about the Cradle of Filth guy, minus the prosody, plus an admittedly Kakko-esque gift for the individual turn of phrase, applies to him and his writing.

I've been a fan of SA since late 2004 and I'm fortunate enough to have seen Jani with SA in southern California (so far from the homeland Finland). Does anyone realize how difficult it is to talk about Sonata Arctica in front of other southern California residents? They have no clue who they are unless you meet fans at a show. I still think their material is good, and I don't expect them to anything out there that is better than songs like Power of One, Destruction Preventer, or (personal favorite) White Pearl, Black Ocean. Those will always be my favorites, but I like hearing something different from my favorite band. Sonata Arctica isn't a one trick pony type of band, and all their newer material proves it. Unia is still a "new" album to me and I like hearing it every now and then. Everyone can admit... this band is pretty damn diverse.

That or.. some like to hear changes whilst some like to hear more recognisable music to what they became a fan of. Each side has happy fans and displeased. You don't need to change your sound (so to speak) to be intriguing. I personally don't mind so much, as long as it doesn't follow imo what was a poor last album.
@miguearaneda453610 жыл бұрын
for those who complain, each one of the songs from this band is a world, there is not a big picture of what this band is about, and what they supposed to sound to, that's precisely the good point over the other bands, powermetal is just one element of the formula they use, and even being a band as diverse like that, you can't please all people, less the one who likes only the powermetal sound.

I like this song. I don't care if people think its simple too simple. Some people may want to write more simple stuff. You can't stay complex all the time. Sometimes you need to cut a few strings and do something simple and of course there's always gonna be songs and even albums of your favorite singers that you may not like. It's not that they're going bad, it's just some albums you like and some you don't. Also remember, writing songs especially for instruments, is hard. You can't just expect a masterpiece to come out all the time. Making masterpieces isn't easy so it's no surprise when an artist or a group does something that isn't considered the best. This is still pretty good song compared to the lazy dust they call "music" these days. I find it catchy and has a moral that there are a lot of industries that try to change you and never lets you leave. So beware of what may sound too good to be true, even if it sounds innocent.

At first I didn't know what to make of this song but about halfway through, it touched some hidden incomprehensible emotions deep within me, and I fell in love right away. It is a really weird song but in the best possible way. Sure the drums are pretty monotonous and the guitars are nothing special, but provide enough crunch to satisfy my metal craving ears, but the lyrics, the melodies and the vocal harmonies are so enchanting that I cannot but love thins song. It really feels like the old Sonata with a matureness of the Unia/Days of the Greys era.

I think Kakko is trying too much to like to the fans, and he is forcing himself to make something good, but I think he should try to like himself, to write something from the deep of his heart, like he have always done

I think he made this lyric from the bottom of his heart, after all, he is kinda lunatic and crazy in a good way. x)

Well that’s what he did on The Ninth Hour and people don’t seem to like it. I think they don’t feel badass enough listening to something that’s not metal. Just because they changed genre doesn’t mean it’s bad or not original anymore.

I'm not sure what people are complaining about. I got into Sonata Arctica from their early albums, and I think Pariah's Child is their best album, song for song, in some time, and this is one of the strongest tracks. To each their own, of course, but it has a unique and powerful sound with an interesting concept behind it.

This sounds much prettier than "Wolves die young" :)

I actually like this a lot. Feels weird hearing such lyrics with that happy-ish tune. It's very cool, at least for me.

I already pre-ordered my hard copy of the album, but I had to get the digital downloads of these two singles to hold me over until it comes out. Holy crap are these songs amazing!

Not gonna lie, as a die-hard Sonata fan I was a bit taken aback at this song, until that goofy part at 3:00. Then I fell in love with it.

It's also interesting how people consider this song and The Wolves Die Young as "happy" and upbeat songs, but if you read the lyrics or even just look at the song titles, they're not very happy songs.
@ForgedParadox10 жыл бұрын
I get you totally man. They sound upbeat but the lyrics usually says otherwise.
@Adultguj10 жыл бұрын
You say that as if it's something unusual for Sonata Arctica to write sad songs with happy tunes, while that pretty much captures their style as a whole throughout all their albums. Even Tony himself mentioned how ironic it actually is.

Adultguj Not at all! One of my favorite things about Sonata is that they're so unpredictable. They are themselves, regardless of how other people like to bitch about them. They are my favorite band :)

Awesome songs here. We can all be blinded by the sky around us. Vision can be hard to see what we need to see. We just need to open our eyes wide open though and look at the world from different wavelengths. Just like we do in astronomy so we need to look at our social world. Once we do that we can see all of the world and see what we need to build a much better world.

That's funny. Admittedly when I saw them in concert I was excited to hear them play it. They also played a joke, for a moment starting "Total Eclipse of the Heart" during the beginning piano solo. That might explain that little gag.

I think he wants his son to go explore the world. At 3:00 he says that "wouldn't it be great if everyone were old and boring like himself" He is trying to make a point to the kid that he NEEDS to see the world. He says that he would end up feeling apathetic and regretful if he doesn't leave this place.
@AxionZetaOne9 жыл бұрын
