Oh my gods, TOS got all kinds of flak for it, ESPECIALLY when Kirk and Uhura had to kiss. Only one who wanted more was Shatner, who kept telling them he needed another take, just so he could kiss her again (and the network was still so freaked out that they had to use the shot where their lips didn't actually touch)

It's not Janeway's gender I was bothered by. I was bothered by her command posture that was more nagging than it was authoritative. Major Kira was a much better character. She was first officer, but whenever Kira took command, she was a tomboy who gave the smack down to Cardassians, Klingons, Jem'Hadar, or whoever else was the villain of the day.

I wonder if DS9 would survive to be launched nowadays. It was so different from TNG, with religion, money, politics and personal animosity. Would that be tolerated by the die-hard fans? Personally I prefer TNG, but won't argue that DS9 wasn't also excellent.

+Robin Hislop - Yes, but DS9 was running parallel to Baby5, so you get a sense of "Well, if they're doing it then we should be doing it because maybe they know or see something that we don't." Kind of like if one bank announces they are buying into company X, then an other banks will assume there must be info they are missing out on and should buy into company X. Not saying DS9 would survive today or not. Just something influencing investment in it at the time.

What's all this she said about backlash from the fans because this show has a black female lead? I can't speak for everyone, but I don't really care who they cast. My biggest gripe is that it's another prequel. It causes too many continuity problems. Just make it post Nemesis and then you can do whatever you want. Why do they keep doing prequels? Star Trek is about moving forward, not backward. And by the way, in season 1 of TNG, we meet a black female captain who was said to have made captain faster than anyone in starfleet history - Tryla Scott. Also LaForge's mother was captain (not to mention that same actress played a captain in the Voyage Home). I'm starting to agree with others that this is forced diversity just so you can say it's there; whereas before, it was there, but it didn't feel forced. The stories and human interest were the important parts.

I see something different. They are trying to lure new fans with promises of action and big flashy visuals, only to trick them into watching a show about ideas and issues. You also may notice, we never see the Discovery herself, only the Shenzhou. They are clearly pulling the old Hollywood-style "big reveal" tactic. Besides,... even way back in 1984, the production for Star Trek III: the Search for Spock was compared to a CIA facility with its secrecy and security. This is nothing new.

See this is my problem: why make her *Spock's* (never-before heard of) adopted sister? Why not just make her the adopted daughter of some unnamed Vulcan family? Why tack her on to an established beloved character? Why not write a character in a way that *doesn't* seem entirely like someone's OC from their latest fanfiction?! And lastly, why is her race the first thing brought up?
@k1productions877 жыл бұрын
There has often been a big hole in Spock's story. Exactly how he changed from the overly-emotional rebellious child into the logic-obsessed emotionless Vulcan we see in TOS. Even taking "The Cage" into account (which technically took place before the events of Discovery) Spock was quite emotional. My theory is, something serious happens with this character (whom Spock may be close to) that causes him to have such a serious breakdown that he swears off ever embracing his Human side again.

Star trek fans always loved diversity. "We" loved the powerful female characters in Star Trek. The problem I have now is that diversity takes priority above anything else. Full female command, flawed male secondary characters. The captain and first officer are the smallest females they can find, and they're fighting these massive klingons. I want a show that follows a charismatic crew on their discoveries. Facing important issues that questions what it is to be human. Diversity is a part of that but not the main goal. It's just... ugh..
@k1productions877 жыл бұрын
Actually, the Captain in this case is not the Captain of the Discovery, she's Captain of the Shenzhou, and I bet my bottom dollar she does not survive the first episode. Further, there is no guarantee they will be fighting "these massive Klingons". In fact, based on what I've seen, i'm willing to bet that the Shenzhou fights to PROTECT these Klingons from the Klingon fleet that arrives to eliminate them (as a hated sub-class that was driven away long ago, or something to that effect). And since THESE Klingons have been away for so long, they did not suffer the effects of the Augment Retrovirus. This means the Homeworld Klingons may indeed have smooth heads, which CBS is trying their best to hide and save for a "big reveal" And yes, the show itself may very well be "a show that follows a charismatic crew on their discoveries. Facing important issues that questions what it is to be human", because have you noticed we only see the Shenzhou, and not the Discovery in these trailers? They're only using footage from the first episode. There is any number of possibilities ahead, and we won't know for sure until it happens. So lets just sit back and see how it turns out. and meanwhile lets also not forget, even TNG took two full seasons to find its footing. And name one premiere episode that was legitimately good? (ex. The Man Trap, Encounter at Farpoint, The Emissary, The Caretaker, Broken Bow)

Keep your hands off the women, lest you get your face smacked by Kira. Every space station would do well with a Major Kira.

K1production There are images of a Klingon with a bat'leth engaging Sasha in the space suits. So there are fighting physically at least once. They say to Starfleet that they are an adversary worthy of their attention. All pointers towards combat with Klingons. They're saying, while showing images of these Klingons: "The Klingon empire have been in disarray for generations". So I'm fairly certain that all Klingons look this way. By the way, I've not mentioned the appearance of the Klingons, because I'm not really bothered by that. "Because have you noticed we only see the Shenzhou..." You're misunderstanding me. I'm expressing concerns that diversity will take president above everything else that is StarTrek. Yes other series had to mature, but times have changed. And those other series started out with very strong main characters, Picard, Janeway(after the pilot), Sisco.. Sashe doesn't strike me as a strong character. I'm just afraid that Discovery is going to fall into the same footsteps as Enterprise. But I will give it a shot, hopefully it can surprise me.

Love Sonequa in Walking Dead but I will see only the premiere episode on regular TV.CBS $ Access is not for me. Nothing wrong with diversity but I won't pay extra to see it.

Oh, come on. You already pay for CBS with your cable bill, and Netflix (which paid for this). So just pay more for what you already paid for!! Come on. You paid for it. Now pay more

"Sad news" was relating to the bad writing and the horrible state of StarTrek knowledge the writer doesn't have. If you enjoy the show: that's cool!

CBS fumbled the ball with star trek discovery. They ruined another show I liked. First they ruined Hawaii five-0, then Macgyver, now they ruined Star Trek. At least the other Star Trek TV shows stayed true to Gene Roddenberry's world.

I'll make this last one short and sweet CBS practice what you preach you had no intentions of doing anything with this woman but making her a promotional tool to get African-American reviews and to look diverse while not behaving that way

no, we need more pc, um can we get the first openly transgender to head security and the engineer should be, um, oh a lesbian, of course, and let's make sure we get some eskimos, because, can you beleive, No Star Trek has ever had an eskimo as a major character, and let's not forget to fall over ourselves about how wonderfully progressive we are being. I hope they remember they have to have storylines worth watching, please.

I agree with you. Quite a few people are not happy with the CBS paid access extra cost. Why can't the show be on regular tv?
@k1productions877 жыл бұрын
some people are just desperate to call anything new "SJW". They don't realize that the more they say it, the weaker the term becomes, and those extremes who actually deserve ridicule for their actions become lost in the crowd while you're all busy pointing fingers at EVERYONE.
@Jarsia7 жыл бұрын
But it's not without merit. Why is it important that Sonequa is a black woman? Why are they giving THAT so much attention? I mean was her race and gender ever a selling point or an issue on TWD? No. So why is a zombie post apocalyptic horror show more progressive than star trek? Trek has had a black captain(and admirals) before, and a woman captain(and admirals), and a black woman captain way back in 1986. And Burnham is only going to be first officer, so even less of an accomplishment. But while Janeway being the first woman to lead a trek cast was somewhat novel back in 95, I dont remember this much attention being paid when Avery Brooks was cast to DS9. While TOS could be rather misogynistic and occasionally blatantly racist, from TNG onward characters are almost NEVER identified based on ethnicity, and rarely on gender. And the message in that is that in most regards, it doesnt matter, so why mention it. Why does her being black or a woman matter? In star trek people arent identified by race because in the 24th century it's accepted that a human being is a human being and has the same potential. Would it be a big deal in the press if someone were the first blond haired captain, or the first green eyed captain? No, because we know those things dont affect intelligence, skill level, or potential. By making race and gender a selling point of the lead actress and her character, youre saying those traits matter(as in, they achieved what they did in spite of those traits). Really bad message

Your "diversity" has ruined Star Trek. It has become a anti-Trump vehicle. President Trump supporters are represented by the Klingons? How "diverse". I'm rooting for the kilingons. As a life long Star Trek superfan I am insulted beyond words... Gean Roddenberry would be aghast. Your "diversity" has alienated a LARGE number of Trekies. Myself included. Good luck with your endeavor... I think you're going to need it.
@SirPeterlll7 жыл бұрын
It wont survive the first season. The hardcore fanbase is already puking on this series be course of its probably not going to be part of the Startrek timeline since they already killed the Klingons. Horrible lens flares all over the place that looks crap! Trying to be diverse with the sole goal of being diverse. Im a huge Trek fan but I hope it dies a quick death so we can forget about this mistake. Thank god the Orville is here to replace the bad taste that STD brings. Noone likes to have an STD, we need to get rid of it. Cure it and ill it off.
@issiewizzie7 жыл бұрын
Some fans initially tend to push back ...the same happened with STNG initially as fans of the original series were very unreceptive to the new series. On the bright side, you have two StarTrek's, series Orville and Discovery to choose from

I'm a star trek fan too, and the fact that Nicholas Meyer was involved gives me hope. We'll see how it turns out, unlike most of the spazzers, I will give something a chance before I make a judgment.

"Trying to be diverse with the sole goal of being diverse." -- Although, to be fair, you can't really say whether this is a true SJW thing or not, as this has *always* been something Star Trek has prided itself on.
@MrRjhyt7 жыл бұрын
Second series already commissioned. Apparently bad reviews are already surfacing for 'The Orville', as being misleadingly trailed, apparently not as comedy heavy as the trailers suggest.
@k1productions877 жыл бұрын
Trailers often lie. What people also don't seem to notice is that the Discovery herself doesn't appear in any prominent role in any of these trailers. It is obvious they only used clips from the premiere episode

I have been a trekkie forever. Even Gene Roddenberry corrected a fan and said trekkie is the correct term. I don't know when trekker came about, but it ain't me. 😀
@k1productions877 жыл бұрын
"Trekker" was coined in the TNG era, as if to split the fanbase between those who obsessed that TOS was the only true Star Trek, and those who thought TNG was the future. Though the "Trekkers" didn't realize that not all "Trekkies" were like that. Then it morphed into something else, that the "Trekkies" were the no-life mama's-basement-dwelling uber-fans and the "Trekkers" were the successful businessmen who also enjoyed Star Trek. ... it was weird. For my money, "Trekkie" is a fan who has always been a fan, and a "Trekker" is a newer fan who doesn't want to be associated with the "fan" stereotype.
