In a 1983 interview with you I seem to remember Ed saying he drove the Lamborghini up to the edge of his studio & miked the trunk and the exhaust pipe & recorded revving up the engine...He was going to use the sounds on JUMP as he told you but he changed it to PANAMA because in Jump you couldn't have heard it because all the instruments are playing at max volume all the way through whereas in Panama there is the LULL after his solo where Dave talks where things go quieter so you can actually HEAR the engine revving...lol

5150 is such a great album! I put it #2 in the ranking of Van Halen albums only behind the debut.

Excellent history lesson Steve! ANYTHING Eddie had to say about constructing a song is pure GOLD! On a funny note.... I cracked up when you brought up "Why Can't This Be Love", and Derek starts playing the solo for "How Do I Know When It's Love". Sounded good, but he got lost in the Rabbit Hole of Eddie's licks! Really not hard to do considering how many there were.

In 1986 I preferred the 5150 album to Eat Em and Smile myself. Even though Vai & Sheehan were great players....Because with 5150 Ed was breaking NEW GROUND and doing himself in a DIFFERENT way, whereas a lot of Eat Em & Smile was other musicians trying to reproduce what Edward had ALREADY DONE.....& I think the tracks on 5150 were more memorable too...There was no way DLR & his hired guns came up with a riff sequence as jammy as the 5150 track ...Omg.

I just cranked up Why Can’t This Be Love and listened to the layering of the instruments; the intelligence in the chord changes, the majesty of the guitar parts. It outclassed the musicianship on the previous record. Problem for guitarists is…only that particular version of Van Halen can play that thing live and make it sound right. Guitarists from that point on would have to stick to playing “classic” Van Halen.

Alex could certainly keep time better than Ed could ....But difficult time signature changes aside Ed's RHYTHM PLAYING PRECISION was UNMATCHED.....Listen to the isolated guitar track of Beautiful Girls.....He noodles all these riff/solo intermittent ideas without MISSING A BEAT...I think he was playing it in your living room on tape unamplified in one of your early interviews Steven.

Eddie is a Guitar God and seems cool but I wish they'd caught him going off on somebody on audio or video angrily.

K girls ..time to grow up and play music for grown ups...Start with Django Reinhart.....
@walterevans2118 Жыл бұрын
Well, Django was a a Jazz GENIUS who lost the use of two of his fingers but adapted his technique to play to a PHENOMENAL level....Actually in the Rock World Tony Iommi who lost 2 of his fingertips in an industrial accident took a lot of inspiration from Django Reinhart in turning a stumbling block into a stepping stone.
