The best American band of the 80s (with R.E.M. right behind them). One of the greatest rock albums of all time!

To me, the guitar solo that finishes this song is an all-timer. I'm a sucker for bands that can create music this beautiful and thoughtful that still sounds rough and handmade and spontaneous, and that's something the Replacements were among the best at, especially in this era.

Unsatisfied from this album has that intrinsically nostalgic feeling that you described in a big way too. Love this album.

This is one of my favourite Replacements songs, I love how bitterweet it is and Let It Be is definitely worth checking out. You have tracks like this or Unsatisfied alongside stuff like Tommy Got His Tonsils Out or We're Coming Out and it's a great balance. Can't really choose whether I like this more than Tim but both of these albums are excellent

Gotta love the ‘mats! As much as I love their louder punkier songs, their more mellow melancholic tracks is why I love Tim and Let it Be.

Love this song! This is my favorite Replacements record and I hope you do a reaction! There are some punkier tracks on this record, but I would say it's more early alt rock than punk. Their previous albums Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash and Hootenanny are during their classic punk era. If you do a deep dive on them I'd recommend listening to Sorry Ma just for context of where the band started vs where they ended up going.

Great album. I bought the cassette based on record reviews and I loved it.

PW rhyming “next you’ll” with “sexual” one of his best. He also kills the solo in the outro

For the longest time a staple of pop music was how wonderful the teenage years are, which, in my experience, is only true for a small minority of people. This song captures, better than any other I've heard, the awkwardness and uncertainty that most people feel during those years. And no, this song isn't necessarily "punky," but give a listen to "Takin' a Ride." But strap yourself into your seat first.

Saw these guys a few times live. They liked their alcohol which affected their performances but still complete legends. One of my all-time fav bands. Songs I recommend are “Within your Reach” and “Skyway”

"Skyway" is my favorite Replacements song. A masterpiece. I saw them twice: A drunken, get-naked-and-switch-instruments, play-covers-of-everything (including the Marine Corps Hymn) at San Diego State in maybe 1985. Then a terrific, sharp, tight set at Fender's Ballroom in Long Beach in IIRC 1986. Glad I got to see them both ways.

great selection and nice review. I love the Replacements .( the album" Tim "just edges it over" Let It Be" and "Pleased to Meet Me "a very close third as my favourite record..)...you need to review "Alex Chilton " off that album. Maybe their greatest song. I agree with you on they having an almost 60s sense of melody to their songs but with that 80s sound. These guys , Husker Du, REM , Pixies ( both of whose discographies you're reviewing shortly) , Meat Puppets , Minutemen, Dinosaur Jnr , were my favourites from that era. Paved the way for what happened in the 90s but certainly nostalgic myself for that music.

Sonic Youth, too. ... Minutemen might be the greatest American band ever. Saw them at least a half-dozen times, twice in lineups with Husker Du and the Meat Puppets.

Saw them twice, one sloppy, drunken show and one tight, sharp, tremendous show. Glad I saw both iterations.

Let it Be just edges out Tim in my eyes. Let it Be may have a few more throw away tracks but the highs are super high. Unsatisfied and Answering Machine are just so full of adolescent longing and frustration you can smell the Clearasil. Favorite Thing and We’re Comin’ Out are classic punk bangers. Androgynous is somehow both way ahead of it’s time on gender issues but would be totally canceled if it were released today.

I'm a huge Ramones fan, but the Tommy Ramone production on Tim is what held that record back, I think. I give the nod to Let it Be because it's the first album they really stretched out on. Tim is an extension of Westerberg growing into his writing abilities, but I think it lacks punch. I wouldn't even say there's a bad song on either album. I just think Let it Be clearly stands the test of time.

@@artis1969 I don’t know, Gary’s Got a Boner definitely isn’t a good song. It’s an always skip for me.

@@WeAreTheSystem1 Lol, i won't argue that. I give it a pass because it shows they still have one foot in the gutter. It could easily fit on Sorry Ma, so to me it has that juvenile charm going for it, but it's not a song I seek out either. They had the ability to be great as well as the willingness to indulge in drunken misfires. That's what made them uniquely frustrating but endearing.

@@artis1969 I love the intro to Gary's Got a Boner, it's so fucked up it feels like it's going to fall apart completely. The musical equivalent of that brief moment of panic you get when you hit a rock and fly off your bike.

Why would it be cancelled? It talks about a lot of the way mainstream progressives want to eventually reach in society

This is post Tim, as far as I know. Their core always remained as rough and brazen as it was at their beginning. That's half their charm. No matter how they matured musically, they always kept their heart.

Let It Be is their third studio album; Tim is the fourth - and their major label debut. I can't pick a favorite between Let It Be, Tim and Pleased to Meet Me. They're all incredible. Don't Tell a Soul and All Shook Down aren't really 'Mats albums, they feel more like Westerberg solo records.
