Its about "using your tool", the more interpretations you get, the better you are using it, some interpretations will have their flaws, but that don't take away the merit of thinking about it and trying a new point os view. The most poisonous thing you could do it to put it on a box of right or wrong or good or bad and disregard all the arguments that a different lens could make it visible just because it can be a bit blurry and different from what you are expecting. I'm loving this channel and it is having one of the best takes on the whole Tool Reaction rabbithole, keep doing this great work, I wish I could devaur all in one day, but I'm not regretting to take only a bite each day and appreciate their work!

The two songs are an integral pairing dealing with two perspectives on the same behaviors. Intention is from the human perspective while Right in Two is from the angelic perspective. This is the sort of pattern and pairing (or tripling or more) that shows up throughout tools albums. Again, the pairs and triples are often separated by non-vocal pieces that serve functions, though the functions vary. Even when the vocal pieces stand apart from other vocal pieces the non-vocal piece separating it has thematic ties to the vocal pieces on one or both sides. Stepping back from the groupings within albums, the albums themselves have broader thematic integrity, and the albums themselves form an arc of development as individuals. I doubt that this latter was planned (as that would take an intention from the start of the first album that I think they lacked), but it does show the process of maturation among the members. The most directly identifiable links between the two songs are the references to will and free will, the stone used in Intention to attack the stranger and the club in Right in Two used to beat down the brother, and the blade forged in both. The perspective in each is reflected reference to strangers in Intention and brothers in Right in Two. Humans see others as strangers while the angels see us all as brothers. A key difference that is not well explained in either song is the part of Intention where it says, "Move by will along / Leave as we come in / Pure as light return to one." What the members of tool meant by this is a pretty open question, but I think it is simply saying that we are born with nothing, we leave with nothing, and we return to the "one" stripped of all our possessions and intentions. Angels, being not limited by mortality and possessing a perspective that is essentially eternal but not yet that of God miss this return and its meaning. PS: I like the braids.

@Brandon_Beaty4 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the song can be distilled to one word: perspective. The angels have been there from before man. Our lives in the context of history are like popping flash bulbs. Humans formed tribes, then countries. They tried to conquer each other and the known world without sailing too far out to sea to avoid falling off the edge of the planet. Astronaut interviews about first reaching orbit are terribly interesting. They usually include a life changing, seismic shift in perspective looking down on our plantet through its thin atmosphere as they circle it every 90 minutes without seeing any borders or markers on countries. Countries continue to try and dominate the globe or wall themselves off from the outside world. Still the fact remains if humanity doesn't destroy itself or an asteroid destroys the planet, eventually the sun will burn out in a supernova that obliterates Earth. If humanity is to continue past that point lots of cooperation and innovation will have to take place to make humanity multi planetary. That will require expanding thinking and perspective. Edit - typos.

A song about Free Will isn't bound on one side or interpretation being 'Right or Wrong'. Like Vicarious and many Tool song that touch the human nature, any "judgement" of what is being said can fall in a trap of being shallow. Every virtue and flaw of humanity is essential for our sirvival and grace. I bring Vicarious for the discussion again as it ilustrate this as well, It might be a vicious behavior, but it is our survial Instinct, is the core tool that prevent us to repeat the mistake of others and rewarded those who learn how to usit, to survive longer and pass it to their children. Great work!

Love your channel. You are on the deep end of the musical pool here. If music is a form of communication, this communicates. If it is a showcase for talent, this is talent. If it is meant to carry emotions, this is emotions. If music is meant to be "deep and spiritual", what do you feel from that song? I love all kinds of music. It's all great because it is someone else's message. But after much open-minded searching, I do think Tool figure out all the best of what music can be.

The song is about how humanity is without balance, we're upsesed with taking anything and turning it into a tug of war. Conflict will always exist as long as there are two sides who think that they're right and the other is wrong, and this cycle will continue until we find a balance in all thing's.

@jamieperdue86634 жыл бұрын
That is honestly the first time I read the lyrics to Intention. Now that I have, Those songs are totally related. Obviously Right in two has angels looking at humans and asking why they act the way they do with the gift of free will. Intention is like a human looking at humans and realizing they act the way they do because of free will. Their are several songs paired together on 10,000 days.
@patriciastanley78164 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking that both songs are a meditation from two different perspectives about the physical nature of survival and the will to survive corrupting the spiritual purity and divine nature of humanity. Intension is from the human perspective and Right In Two from the perspective of angels that cannot understand the consequences of free will coupled with a need to survive and cultivate resources and how this naturally creates division and violence.

I think the point of it all is that although we have been given free will (whether by God or just by nature), it appears that human nature is to separate/divide. Where there is one, we are “bound” to divide it (all) in two. “Angels” could be any outside perspective, judging the decisions we make, left feeling baffled and confused. Whether the lyrics are “gotta divide it all right in two” or “cut it all right in two” (it’s always sounded like “cut” but “gotta” might be the correct lyrics and are more damning of man’s decisions) doesn’t matter, it’s the same sentiment. The Judgement of Solomon bible story comes to mind, although maybe not a direct correlation to the song. In the end, to an outside viewer, we have free will, reason, and resources, yet “this is what we choose”.

Our nature was perfect, meaning: left idle our thoughts and actions will drift towards good things, righteous things. Without even trying! But since Adam & Eve went AGAINST their own perfect inclinations and sinned, they became imperfect. And as such, all humans thereafter are imperfect and have imperfect/bad inclination. An interesting note about the "snake hissing" portion, as you referred to it, at the beginning of "Intension": there are actually lyrics that are played backward during this. They go like this: "Work hard, Stay in school, Listen to your mother, your father is right/rising/right, son... Jesus loves you... Work hard, Stay out of school, Listen to your mother, your father is right/rising/right son..." Edit: pulled this from another source... The "stay out of school" part may not be right- I'm sure you could find the song played backward and interpret this for yourself.

i always thought this was one of their more straightforward songs... "repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift and eye to heaven conscious of our fleeting time here..." Angels (Creations of God) have no free will.. they do Gods bidding. Humans are given the gift of reason and are so senseless. The earth is so plentiful, yet they build tools to fight and kill each other instead of growing together.

And contextually, this album was released in ‘05, just a few years after we went to war. So I’m betting that was partially the inspiration for som of the lyrics. I love the debate at the end. I don't think the song is contradictory as you say around the 30 minute mark. You say the lyrics dehumanize us, compares us to animals. Maynard says "Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here." Intension and the beginning of Right in Two shows us the inherent duality born in us, but we have choice and free will. And we have a third path. To see divinity and to share and help each other rather than fight over resources that are plentiful. What dehumanizes us is our choice to fight, to treat each other like animals. It seems like duality, but the angels benched along with patience and reason are waiting for our tug of war to end. We do best when we unite and help each other. We fail when we war and fight over things we have enough to share
