I think it is less of blind chaos, and more of an understanding that even in enlightenment, one must accept that there is a bad and chaotic side, 7empest and Mockingbeat are their attempts at control over the Chaos, and I think they won.

Chocolate Chip Trip always reminds me of the cookie assembly line scene from Edward Scissorhands... The strange tonality, the hint of cookies with “chocolate chip,” and the overall industrial feeling. You: [starts 7empest] Me: [sips tea, waiting for the bass drop] You: *Ooh... bass...* Me: *there it is* [sips tea] Love your channel
@eatower23 жыл бұрын
I always saw the song as the journey through the first bite of the perfect chocolate chip cookie, at the start it kind of feels like he sticking slightly behind the moment, making it feel like he is chasing the taste, anticipation building, then it hits the tongue causing the slight slow down as the first crumbs come loose, followed by the bite down where he goes nuts, then at that point forward, it feels like he is sticking ahead of the moment a tad, seeming like he is escaping from it. The gong is the sip of milk that washes it all away. People will be sleeping on how amazing CCT is for a while I think.

I took tempest to be a rebuke of a particular government official who would prefer to ignore big problems (climate change) (Covid, though it came after this was released) than acknowledge them and make the hard decisions to face them. What an amazing journey this has been for you both and for us on this amazing ride along with you! Easily the best reaction channel out there for Tool, and much more to come I'm sure, and we are proud to have you in the Tool Army! If I could suggest another band that you might love reacting to, may I suggest 'Porcupine Tree' to you? They have deep, thought provoking lyrics, incredible rhythms, amazing musical talent and are also led by an incredible vocalist, Steven Wilson. Their music can be similar at times to Tool as in it will take you on quite a journey and they also could be compared to a heavier rock version of Pink Floyd as well. To be honest, their sound changed after leaving the Delirium Label so the first 4 albums aren't what I would say would be best to start with. The sound they have currently started with the album 'Stupid Dream' and would be a great starting point for a journey you would love through those 8 albums total including Stupid Dream that they had after leaving the Delirium Label. They are an amazing band and put on an incredible live show as well, and I hope you would consider them as a follow up band to listen to. If I could make a suggestion of a song just to get you started that would give you a full understanding of their sound, I would suggest listening to the song 'Arriving Somewhere But Not Here.' I hope they make the list and become a new band for you to react to and thank you so much for an incredible journey with Tool and being the best reaction channel out there and I can't wait to see where we go together in the future!

I think that if you perceive all the albums in a row, the overarching meaning will be pretty much the journey of a soul through spiritual awakening, or life itself (if you consider that life is but expanding of consciousness). In the first ones it is the rawness of existence with rage, sexual urges, all the "lower" states of human nature. Then it starts evolving to confronting those feelings, slowly striving for a higher existence (with all the pitfalls that come with it). And then you start coming to a place of understanding and refinement. The journey never really ends but if you are in it, Tool can provide support and help to process emotions and thoughts in each step of the way. Really enjoyed your reactions!

Notice how Adam and Danny go "back and forth" with the rhythm at the start. One plays the single notes the other the note pattern. This song encapsulates the entire album and their entire catalogue in one song. People say a hurricane removes all of the negative energy when it passes over. People also say Tool plagiarized themselves from old work on this album. Also that the entire album is really one song in 7 parts. The cd version only has 7 tracks. The missing tracks on the cd are not necessary.

This may already be mentioned in the comments, but a Tempest is like a hurricane, but I see it as something that goes in a perpetual cycle, around and around. A torrent (as Maynard refers to also in the lyrics) or like a swirl that never ends. Imagine narcissistic tendencies, there is a center, but the actions and behaviors go through this cycle, and is predictable. Many narcissists believe that their reality is the center, and may have behaviors and lies in an effort to manipulate the truth of what is occurring so that how they interpret the situation meets their ideal, but reality is not necessarily that case. I have known some people with narcissistic tendencies, and their actions are very predictable and continue, no matter what the result. A tempest, or a stasis. The odd time signatures throughout the song (and most of the entire album) are in counts/meters of 7, rather than a standard 4 count. This gives the entire song and many parts of the album, a swirling feel. Hence, spelling the word Tempest with a 7 rather than a “T”. I have often read, that a lot of times the band lays down tracks, with no real intention of the lyrics or song theme. Maynard then listens to the music and later adds the lyrics to what he is feeling from the original instrumental track. Now, Tool are the only individuals that can confirm this of course, but if that is the case, then the results are even more remarkable in my opinion. You guys are great, and I am interested in seeing if you move onto another band to focus on. Great journey, and thank you for your work.

I really enjoyed witnessing your Tool discovery journey and your appreciation of not just the compelling music, but also the provocative lyrics. Really well done. Regarding a classical piece, may I recommend two Mozart piano concertos played consecutively. Number 23 KV 488 and Number 27 KV 595 with Alfred Brendel on piano with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-fields recorded in 1971. It is a powerfully emotion experience (even for a generally non-classical music person such as me).

An Accadian hymn about the Seven Harmful Spirits: “They are the destructive reptiles, even the winds that create evil! as an evil reptile, as an evil wind, do they appear! as an evil reptile, as an evil wind, who marches in front are they ! Children monstrous (gitmalutu), monstrous sons are they! Messengers of the pest-demon are they! Throne-bearers of the goddess of Hades are they! The whirlwind (mátu) which is poured upon the land are they! The seven are gods of the wide-spread heaven. The seven are gods of the wide-spread earth. The seven are gods of the (four) zones. The seven are gods seven in number. Seven evil gods are they! Seven evil demons are they! Seven evil consuming spirits are they! In heaven are they seven, in earth are they seven!”Seven are they, seven are they! In the hollow of the deep, seven are they! (In) the glory of heaven, seven are they! In the hollow of the deep in a palace grew they up! (In the original, “from the hollow …. came they forth”). Male they are not, female they are not! They are the dust-storm, the travelled ones are they! Wife they possess not, child is unborn to them. Order and kindliness know they not. They hearken not to prayer and supplication. From the horse of the mountain came they forth. Of Ea are they the foes. The throne-bearers of the gods are they. To trouble the canal in the street are they set. Evil are they, evil are they! Seven are they, seven are they, seven doubly said are they!”Another poet of Eridu, in a hymn to the Fire-god, speaks of the seven spirits in similar language: “O god of Fire,” he asks, “how were those seven begotten, how grew they up? Those seven in the mountain of the sunset were born; those seven in the mountain of the sunrise grew up.”Throughout they are regarded as elemental powers, and their true character as destructive winds and TEMPESTS is but thinly veiled by a cloak of poetic imagery. But it will be noticed that they already belong to the harmful side of nature; and though the word which I have rendered “evil,” after the example of the Semitic translators, means rather “injurious” than “evil” in our sense of the word, they are already the products of night and darkness; their birth-place is the mountain behind which the sun sinks into the gloomy lower world.” (Hymns on the 7 matu gods)

I would love to see your reaction to their music. Maybe you could react to Starset (American band) someday. They're one of my favorite bands. Their music is very space and science fiction themed. They call themselves cinematic rock. It's like watching a science fiction movie or listening to the soundtrack to a science fiction movie. Most of their songs have long outros. The outros are instrumental music. Starset and Tool are different but they both can be cinematic. They both have cool instrumental music. I would recommend the song My Demons. Listen to that song first. Thank you again! Take care.

Hey guys! the journey was a pleasure, hope you keep listening to more stuff as well! Spiral Out! I'd like to suggest some stuff since you mentioned other band such as porcupine tree and classical music: other 'prog' bands that might interest you with some great lyrics and musicality are Rishloo, Leprous and Katatonia. If you'd go to classical music, I don't know how it would work in terms of views, but regardless you can find great music with many composers if you want to do it for yourselves! I'd suggest you don't 'limit' yourself with the most famous '2 or 3', so just naming a FEW that are great but not "AS" famous as some others (you probably know of them but just in case =] ) - Mussorgsky, Prokofiev, Mahler, Paganini, Dvořák and Rachmaninov. Seriously, did Maynard know of Covid before it was Covid? Hear me out... Read some of the lyrics in a few songs. In 7emptest: "Misleading, tranquility ruse You're gonna happen again, That's what I think. Follow the evidence, look it dead in the eye, You are darkness. Trying to lull us in before the havoc begins, into a dubious state of serenity. Acting all surprised when you're caught in the lie, We know better" And they pick this song for the grammy? Great song, but Descending is also excellent. Album name: Fear Inoculum. Inoculum defined: The definition of an inoculum is a substance introduced into the body to create or increase the body's resistance or immunity to a disease. Example, a flu vaccine is an inoculum.

Might not be a popular opinion, but 7empest just feels like a random Tool song generator was programmed with Adam at 11, DC and Justin at 8, and Maynard at 5. I get it, it’s a culmination and a display of growth and the hero’s journey as a band, but it’s hard to grab any specific piece and hold on...like being in the eye of an undertow storm lasting 10,000 days and seeing all the riffs, rhythms and words fly by. Powerful, but not something I want to revisit on a regular basis. Still blows all other bands away, but by Tool standards it doesn’t resonate with me like most of their other towering achievements.
