I think he felt betrayed by Lucy and he tried to kill her because he suddenly realised he couldn’t trust her and that he thought that she had an ulterior motive. But Snow was manipulative and did everything that benefitted him so he also killed her to tie off some loose ends.
@vampyyrezz10 ай бұрын
In the book, she doesn’t say “besides me” referring to snows loose ends. Instead, as soon as he sees the guns, he realizes he could go back to the capitol if he destroys them. And that he was okay with leaving her all alone and abandoning her. She leaves him alone for minute to pick katniss, and that’s when he decides she’s the last loose end. This man was a hardcore narcissist, who only cared about himself, and that lead to extreme paranoia, which is why even though Lucy never did anything to make him not trust her, he still ended up betraying her anyways, deciding to kill her.

Something I will say I appreciate in the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and the regular Hunger Games films is that the firearms develop alongside their actual counter parts irl meaning in Ballad they are using HK G3s (actually looks more like the earlier Spanish CETME rifle) but I’m especially the Mockingjay films District 13 is using HK G36Cs the successor to the HK G3, also I guess that means the company Heckler and Koch exists and it’s an American company and not German.

9:02 I also noticed that they changed where in the plot Pure As The Driven Snow is. HUGE SPOILER WARNING(although if you are watching this video, you already know what happens) In the book, Sejanus is hung and then Coriolanus has his emotional breakdown and then goes to The Hob and Lucy Gray sings Pure As The Driven Snow.
@brianbommarito337611 ай бұрын
9:04 You’re quite right. And though he’s a manipulative piece of trash, I do believe he had some form of respect (respect, mind you, never love, because ones like Snow are incapable of feeling love when it’s against their own selfish interests) for Lucy, and he would’ve given her the decency to hear her out. Think of it as the decency an evil man might give to a prisoner before he has them shot by allowing them to express their last wishes. He saw something of Lucy’s spirit later in Katniss, and this made him respect her to a certain degree. But, even respect is not enough when that person who is respected becomes an obstacle, or even a threat, to a person like Coriolanus Snow. Indeed, if an enemy respects you, they are more likely to use double-barreled shotguns on you, because they want to win and they don’t want to make it easy for you to beat them.
@z2yn11 ай бұрын
A lot of people say the movie softened him from his book counterpart - they both even each other out. I saw this as a clever way of the movie being aware of the limited time and thus deciding to make a greater foreshadowing into their break-up and his descent into dark territory. Him leaving during his song demonstrates that he doesn't care for music (like the book focused on) and he loves her less than he cares about his self-preservation. Also his focus on Sejanus side-activities. There's some form of care and love he has for them in both book and movie, but what ruins it is that Sejanus and Lucy Gray are free-spirited and in parts optimistic. Coriolanus is not.
@nyom637811 ай бұрын
While I think Snow did love Lucy, I do not think it was a healthy form of love. His parents died, his grandma probably loved him but she didnt show it, Tigris did love him but it's clear he took her for granted. And any form of love he might've showed to Lucy Gray wasn't love but in reality manipulation, because manipulation can also have tender moments like when they kissed or swam in the river. I haven't read the book but I'm basing my interpretations from movie Snow. But I also think he wasn't manipulating her on purpose, often manipulators don't realize they're acting that way. And this is not to say that he's innocent and he was just influenced, not at all. But I think that with Lucy Gray it was an exceptionally toxic relationship from his part. He probably didn't realize that and if he did, he didn't care at all. If Lucy Gray had stayed, he would've killed her anyway eventually. I think he loved her genuinely, but his genuine form of love was poison.

When you think more about Part III, you realise that if Coriolainus didn't record Sejanus' plan and send it to DR Gaul, he never would've said "Three's enough for me" in the woods. Only two. Which then means there's a chance him and Lucy would've been fine and could've lived their lives Together up North. ...mostly, anyway. 9:13 I disagree that it was love. He may have had feelings for her, but it wasn’t love. Maybe respect. Maybe sympathy or pity. Maybe the knowledge that he is stomping on a person’s heart makes him do it. The first person you hurt or even kill is always the hardest, because you still have something of a conscience left in you. But after that it becomes easier and easier, until you’re like Snow as an old man and can do it effortlessly. But I cannot believe it is love, because true love never does such things as he is capable of doing to her. Love does not manipulate people for self-gain.
@kurtskrow11 ай бұрын
I actually love this conversation and wanted to discuss it with someone. When I say these words PLEASEEEE do not think I’m saying them with aggression or anything. I just love talking about Hunger Games and Snow since he’s so complex. I believe Snow loved Lucy Gray in his own sick twisted way. The novel makes a point as to why he is the way he is. Snow happens to be selfish and manipulative because of how he was raised. He’s obsessed with power, money, and control due to his upbringing: he is a product of his environment. The novel tells you that Snow was once pure, Tigris saying that when he was a child he was very happy and wouldn’t even hurt a fly. So we know that he wasn’t born evil, however he became evil because of his life. We also know that Tigris did everything she could to keep the good inside of him, often giving him life advice, and he would oblige because he trusted Tigris. In the novels it’s explained that Snow was born in the middle of a war (correct me if I’m wrong). He watched his own neighbor cut off a leg of a corpse and proceed to eat it. He watched his own mother die in childbirth, watched his little sister die after. He then had to hide underground cause his house got bombed, etc etc. Snow has been through A LOT. All from the ages of 1-10 years old. Which are very important years. He also explains that throughout his life, the Capitol- or Panem has just been this big bundle of chaos. Not once did he ever experience true control, which he needs because without control- to Snow at least, chaos will reign. This is why he is so extreme, and in my opinion manipulative, because he NEEDS that power and control, without it, society will be lost. At least in his mind. Due to his environment, he becomes sociopathic. He’s not pure evil though, I’d say he’s broken. Snow is inward, not outward. The way he thinks the way he functions, almost everything he does is selfish and is always inward. However with Lucy Gray? It’s not. The novel states that Snow CANNOT risk his future, his whole life depends on this plinth prize, his house, his grandma’am health, Tigris’ future, everything depends on this Plinth prize. He says he can’t risk anything, nothing will get in his way. But when it came to Lucy Gray? Without even thinking he just risked his own future for her like it was instinctive. The bastard risked his OWN future for her, he ruined his OWN future for her. That’s why him cheating is so significant, because the whole entire book up until he cheats. He repeatedly mentions how he needs a clean slate, a clean book so he can help his family. However he throws this all away instinctively to protect and to help Lucy Gray, which speaks volumes. Snow would never do that unless he was genuinely in love with someone. Snow also risks his own academic grades as well for Lucy Gray, which he states he can’t do that cause he needs the Plinth prize. In the novel it is said that if Snow sneaks academy food to Lucy Gray, he will be expelled. And he does it anyways. Not just this but he even gives Lucy Gray his mothers compact which is a HUGE DEAL. The novel states that this belonged to his mother. And Snow adores his mother. The very memories of his mother is able to calm him down, telling the reader that he holds her at a high regard. That he truly loves his mother. He never let anyone touch his mother’s compact, it was the last thing of his mother and even Snow says he wishes he took after his mother because she was so gorgeous. When someone insults his mother he immediately becomes enraged because he holds her with such high regard. So the fact that he gave his mother’s compact to Lucy Gray? That shows that he really did trust her, believe in her, and well- love her. As he gave the most precious thing he had to her. Not just this but when it is revealed that Snow destroyed everything of his past, including his mother’s compact, it’s significant because it tells the reader/viewer that Snow genuinely has changed. No longer is there good contained, he is evil, and will now embrace it. In the novel Snow even has a moment where he realizes what he’s doing is wrong. The way he’s behaving, he’s becoming like his father. Someone who he basically hates due to how cold and dismissive his father was. Snow vows to never become that way, and when he realizes he’s becoming the very thing he hates. He actually does try to make an effort to change. I forget what he says exactly but it’s in PART III when he becomes a peacekeeper, he just all around realizes he’s a piece of shit and has to change, and Lucy Gray is his motive. It’s part of the reason why he leaves with Lucy Gray, because he realizes how awful he’s becoming (correct me if I’m wrong). I’ll also add the point I brought up earlier. Where Snow shields Lucy Gray with his body. This may seem like nothing but for Snow this is A LOT. In the novel it states that Snow would never risk his life for ANYONE, let alone someone who he believes is underneath him. He would never risk his own life for someone else’s, this point is also brought up in the Novel Mockingjay, when he and Katniss are conversing, Snow straight up tells Katniss that he would leave the capitol citizens to die and get bombed by the rebels if it meant he could escape. So him shielding someone with his body, willing to DIE for someone, is very significant and only someone who is truly and deeply important to him would bring this emotion out. He even does it instinctively as well. Protecting Lucy Gray to Snow, is just instinct, why? Because he loves her. He sees her as good, as the only good thing in this world so he wants to protect it. Similar to how Katniss falls in love with Peeta because to her, Peeta is good, he is the only good thing in this world (not saying Katniss and Snow are the same). Snow, even though he is a sociopath. He can love. It is a sick and twisted kind of love, where usually he just wants control. But it is love, he loved her in his own sick twisted manipulative controlling way. Him betraying Lucy Gray makes sense in HIS view (not saying what he did was good, Snow’s fucking crazy) but to him. What he did to Lucy Gray makes sense? Why? Because he was able to convince himself that she tried to kill him. In the novels when Snow is aiming for Lucy Gray, that whole segment is trippy as hell, and it’s read in a way where he was hallucinating that she was NEVER there. The whole entire thing he is experiencing is confusing as hell because he’s hallucinating. In his mind, Lucy Gray tried to poison him with a snake, so he shoots at her because this convinces him that she is trying to kill him. This is why he aims at her without a moments notice, because in his mind, she is aiming for him, so he has to get rid of her. In HIS POINT OF VIEW it makes sense. But as the reader and viewer it makes you realize that he’s fucking crazy and what he’s doing isn’t just at all. But because he’s so delusional and crazy, he believes it’s just. Another thing I’ll mention, but Snow sitting with Lucy Gray and having picnics with her also proves how he loves her. He didn’t care if people saw that he saw Lucy Gray as an equal. As long as she was somewhat happy around him, he just didn’t care. While having these picnics he would also reveal his childhood and past to her, he’d tell her how his family was in financial trouble, how he never had much to eat cause of how poor his family was etc etc. which- like I said speaks volumes in how much he trusts her. The fact that he’s willing to tell Lucy Gray that he himself is poor as hell, has nothing to eat, and his life is in shambles? Is absolutely INCREDIBLE because he only tells this to her and nobody else. Literally nobody else but Lucy Gray. Snow cares so much about how he is perceived and seen, but with Lucy Gray he just tells her the truth, he just wipes that facade away, which tells you how much love he has for her. Not to mention, the novel pretty much does confirm he loved her. In the epilogue it says, and I quote: *“Sometimes he would remember a moment of sweetness and almost wish things had ended differently. But it would never have worked out between them, even if he’d stayed. They were simply too different. And he didn’t like love, the way it had made him feel stupid and vulnerable. If he ever married, he’d choose someone incapable of swaying his heart. Someone he hated, even, so they could never manipulate him the way Lucy Gray had. Never make him feel jealous. Or weak. Livia Cardew would be perfect.”* So yeah, I believed he loved her in his own sick twisted way. The movie does a pretty decent job at showing us his inner dialogue, Tom Blyth at showing us how Snow is feeling with his eyes especially at the end when he’s just so detached from society and is empty as hell. But still, the movie does a bad job at showing us why Snow loved Lucy Gray. Since their romance feels so rushed (imo). Am I defending Snow? No. I won’t ever defend him. Yeah he’s broken but it doesn’t excuse the fact that he killed thousands of district kids, and destroyed district 12, etc etc. he’s an atrocious person and I’m glad he died. But, I love him as a character. He’s written wonderfully. - I’m not spell checking this.

I dunno, I think he loved her but he also felt like he kind of owned her if that makes sense? He loved her in his own fucked up way I think.

@@kurtskrowI agree with most you’re saying (and wow thank you for the pages you wrote), but I think when Snow fled District 12 with Lucy Grey, he did it mostly because he was afraid of getting caught with the weapons not out of love for Lucy grey.

I think of him as a narcissist, I think Lucy was interesting for him at the beginning and he simply decided that he wanted and needing her? Like, he gets jealous over dumb things and acts very irrational when things are about her, what he feels for her is to possesive and that moment when she performed a song for him was like a confirmation that he finally had her and he just walks out like "my job is done" he sees her as a thing and the scene at the forest when he's going nuts for me shows that even better, he accused Lucy of trying to kill him when she wasn't even there, really getting paranoid, and saying like "how could you, after everything I did for you" just screamed narcissist for me
