One of my favorite cases is Janet Jackson's "China Love" sampling "Moonlit City Roa", from Legend of Mana. It's extremely blatant, especially considering it's literally the beginning of the song sped up and repeated throughout. But the best part? The Medallion, a 2003 Jackie Chan movie, used China Love in its soundtrack... but only a very small piece, specifically _the vocal-less beginning notes that sampled Moonlit City Roa!_ And that's how Yoko Shimomura technically composed a track for a Jackie Chan movie.

Still to this day my favorite little bit of info is Michael Jackson's influence on Sonic 3 and Knuckles' soundtrack. And on the opposite side of this video. I like when video games reference real songs. Like in Hifi Rush, the newer game. The first Boss Fight goes to a song titled "Too Big to Fail, and it's identical to Nine Inch Nails' 1,000,000 which is the song they used in the game if you play with the OST off. The beginning of the song is identical to 1,000,000.

It's quite probable Burial did the same thing for his Untrue album which was made using soundforge, a program which afaik only allows you to edit audio i.e. samples are the only thing you really can use. If anyone wants to know more about Burial's Untrue look for the video titled "Burial's Untrue: The making of a masterpiece" by Resident Advisor. Burial's music is almost too emotionally charged for me, even when I'm very happy some of his songs can make me feel like I have a lump in my throat, powerful stuff.

one of the only times i’ve ever willingly listened to that style of music 🤓 as someone who loves gaming and it’s culture and hip hop as well i think u should consider giving a deeper dive to baby keem’s discography, especially now that he’s young. ive had the privilege of seeing him live twice and he’s a generational artist.

I did NOT expect Burial to show up here. I've listened to Untrue so many times and had no idea about that sample. Archangel is one of the best tracks ever produced. Untrue is a masterpiece of the 2000's UK Bass scene. I'm so happy you put that in there.

dude i loved this video. i feel like this video was calling my name, especially when u got to the 1:30 mark since i grew up on mike jones, project pat, slim thug, etc,but also have a passion for retro video games (i love video game osts, especially shit from the 90's like the snes & ps1) as someone who's learning how to produce music and trying to find good source material to interpolate and use as a sample, this video gives me more ideas to look into other alternative media outside of just spotify to find shit to sample

Really fascinating video, glad to see somebody cover this topic as it's always been a point of interest to me. I actually have an addition: "Jokes End" from Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is used as a sample in XXTENTACION's "came2kill". I'm not familiar with his music but I heard this track playing a couple months ago and immediatly recognized the sample. Whoever was producing for XXTENTACION at the time had great game taste I guess.

I think that one of the best uses of video game sampling is in Joe Hawley's album "Joe Hawley Joe Hawley" as nearly every song uses some sample. The biggest one of samples is almost the entirety of "crazy food" as there is almost always what sounds like a video game sample in there. Great album and great use of video game sampling.

I really like what Dear Silas did with their first two albums. Link to the Past has the name and inspiration but it goes through all of the songs on that album.

NFS games had a lot of FNF references before FNF even existed.
