The true sadness is that after Lennon's murder there was no hope of the Beatles ever sharing a studio or stage again. We can only imagine,given the proliferation of various reunions over the intervening years, how stupendous that would have been. All these years later and I still get profoundly sad at the anniversary of his death .

Nice video as always Mr Heaton. It's funny how many of these songs sort of mimicked each Beatle's own personality. John certainly was the most direct and didn't take shit from anyone, whereas, I always thought Paul was the most coy. He always seemed to be the most amiable and diplomatic so long as he got his way, but always willing to offer the "olive branch". George, always seem to speak in a somewhat, cynical, matter of fact, yet universal spiritual nature as to how he viewed the world. Meanwhile, Ringo. Well, Ringo seemed to just want everyone to get along with Peace and Love. However, I have heard that about "Back off Boogaloo" was a dig at Paul. Another line from that song that seems to fit this theory, "Wake up meat head don't pretend that you are DEAD get yourself off of the cart".

Hi John, I am going to go out there and say "Arrow Through Me" by Paul is about John. Paul is singing about an unusual topic of betrayal. It certainly wasn't about Linda. It is automatically assumed to be about a girl and that would the genius of how Paul hides the message in the song. It would apply more to a friendship than a romance as betrayal is certainly most likely to be the death of a spousal relationship. The next year, Paul had "Plastic Mac Band" on the bass drum in the video "Coming Up". John was very much on his mind. By the way, you forgot about "Martin Luther" which was Lennon's nickname in the Beatle days on "Let Em In" on Wings At The Speed Of Sound. Also, "Cafe On The Left Bank" from London Town was about his time with John back in the day when they went to France in the sixties. I am surprised you missed this as London Town is one of your favs. LOL.

It has been said Macca,s song Little Lamb Dragonfly is about John and George....it would be nice to think so.....but i very much doubt it as around this time 1972/ 1973 things were hardly cordial between them.....Paul does admit Too many people is about John and on a slightly different slant Paul,s song Little Willow is for Ringo,s first wife Maureen after her passing. The most obvious one is as you say How do you sleep, have you seen the uncensored version of the recording session at Tittenhurst park now that is vicious ! And if course the heartfelt Here Today from Paul after Johns murder is very moving especially live, even now....keep up the video,s John....really enjoy them...

I really appreciate this review I don't think other KZbinrs did before, but there are some certain and suspected songs of The Beatles on eachother u forgot to mention: - Baby's In Black from Beatles For Sale, was written about Stewart Sutcliffe's gf Astrid Kirchherr. - In My Life, "Some are died and some are living..." is possibly about the current Beatles at the time and the ex Beatles and Stewart again as for sure, he was so close to John at the early days. - With A Little Help From My Friends, obviously Paul wrote it for Ringo and it's certainly about the other Beatles helping Rngo in many ways. - Baby You're A Rich Man, in case you consider Brian Epstein a Beatle, which is what I do.. - Come Together, it's highly suspected to be a description on each Beatle George, Paul, John and lastly Ringo. - Mean Mr Mustard, some sources say that Mr Mustard is Paul Idk it's silly but don't think it's a reference to Paul at all I didn't wanted to mention it not worthy... Yet some ppl believe that. - Two Of Us, maybe was written about Paul's long journey with John especially this line following... "You and I have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead." It's so hard to believe this line was written for his recent relationship between him & Linda. - Carry That Weight & The End, are both suspected being a farewell Beatles records. - George Harrison's It's Johnny's Birthday, obviously it's a weird record about John's 30th birthday. - John Lennon's I Know (I Know), it's an underrated record from Mind Games and I couldn't help wondering if it was about Paul, I mean the lyrics and John & Paul relationship at the time wasn't on its best, so I read some comments on the song and I can't pick one line or two the whole song is highly suspected about Paul but here's some of the lines "The years have passed so quickly...", "Today, I love you more than yesterday...", "And I know it's getting better (all the time)..." and the outro "No more crying." - George's single When We Was Fab.

I loved this insightful and lovely review. Regarding that line in "Run of the mill" No one around you will carry the blame for you" i misheard that line as No one around you Will carry that weight for you. I was then totally wrong in my thoughts that "i want you [she's so heavy] which was about yoko was answered by George in his song. However i then then thought that pauls line "boy your going to carry that weight a long time" might have been an answer. Then when i heard Georges rare compliment of a paul song was for "I'm carrying something for you" I feel like one of those crazy Beatle fans who read into thing that are not there but perhaps they are,

Friends to Go , Paul said was written in the style of George . The Song we were singing is about John and how they used to go to Pauls house when Jim was at work to write songs and smoke loose tea in a pipe. Run of the Mill is definitely about John and Paul particularly lines like "how I lost your friendship" and "another day for you to realise me or put me down again". Also Back Seat of my Car was around at the time of the Get Back sessions so would not have been a part of the sniping in 1971 on Imagine and Ram. Paul never fell out as deeply with Ringo as he did with John and George apart from the infamous time he threw him out of the house when he came around to persuade him to move the release of "McCartney " back , probably due to Ringos inherently kind and friendly nature.

Very interesting video John. It's curious to reflect that Paul didn't record any kind of tribute to George. The last couple of decades he has written a few songs about the good old days in which other Beatles appear very subtly. For example in That Was Me he references 'Mercy beatin' with the band'. Also in Early Days there's the line 'Dressed in black from head to toe/ Two guitars across our backs/We would walk the city roads'. Cheers, James

Great idea for a topic John!! Dear Friend is so sad. How Do You Sleep starts mocking the Sgt. Pepper crowd gathering. Isn't It A Pity sounds like a response to Hey Jude's lyrics + the chord changes are similar and the length of it with the similar coda. Here Today is so sad. No other group (yet) has done their public squabbling with such excellent music. I love all the hidden and not so hidden messages in music from The Beatles. Glass Onion has a few self references. Savory Truffle has one too. It's kind of creepy and weird how they sound on the White Album.

I always heard "Smile Away" as sort of Paul's response to the comments/insults against him. And while "Dear Friend" is a nice response to "How Do You Sleep", it was recorded before HDYS came out. Still works, regardless. From the Wings song "Let 'Em In", Paul is quoted, "'brother John' - I would be thinking either of John Lennon, or Linda's brother, John." Uncle Ernie was supposedly in reference to Keith Moon, but Ringo did fill the role of Uncle Ernie on the London Symphony Orchestra version of 'Tommy', so perhaps it was a shout out to Ringo? "Silly Love Songs" was a direct (and brilliant, IMHO) response to John's criticisms of Paul's "Granny music".

Back of Boogaloo I suspect is a harmless song with nothing or very little about Paul, but people want it to be about Paul. Friends to Go is the track on Chaos and Creation you are thinking of. It wasn't so much about George but in the George style Paul said it came to him as though he "caught" a George song. Let's face it, the Beatles lyrics were frequently intertextual, and this was a common feature of their work. In "Glass Onion", John sings, "I told you 'bout Strawberry Fields, You know the place where nothing is real..." Then further along, he says, "I told you 'bout the walrus and me, man. You know that we're as close as can be, man. Well here's another clue for you all. The walrus was Paul." He then sings, "I told you 'bout the fool on the hill. I tell you, man, he living there still." John lists here all his favorite Paul songs. This comment shows John's profound respect and love for Paul, a guy with whom he changed the world. Paul earlier in his career had written "Paperback Writer", a song about John. This tune commented humorously on John's becoming a writer, authoring two books, In his Own Write and A Spainiard in the Works. It's mocking of John, though gently mocking of him in tone. John would never forget this little dig. George too, frequently did this in his rare songs. In Blue Jay Way he wrote, "There's a fog upon L.A. And my friends have lost their way. We'll be over soon, they said. Now they've lost themselves instead." This is just a nice weird song about separations, disconnections, and fracturing relationships. But it's hard not to see that George is commenting on the Beatles here. The friends of George who have lost their way are John and Paul. Many of George's songs comment further on John and Paul. George's song "I, Me, Mine" comments on the internal, puerile wranglings of the Beatles among each other, but principally John and Paul. Or as he says, "No one's frightened of playing it. Everyone's saying it. Flowing more freely than wine. All through your lives, I, Me, Mine." Judging from the way George's guitar wailed, this song released a great deal of his repressed fury at both John and Paul. "Piggies" also can be interpreted this way. But the killer song for George's attack on Lennon/McCartney would have to be, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", his requiem for the Beatles. His lyrics are about the world in general, but John and Paul specifically. I don't have to repeat his pointed and devastating lyrics. But it's hard to ignore the following: "I don't know how someone controlled you. They bought and sold you." And even worse, "I don't know how you were diverted, you were perverted too. I don't know how you were inverted, no one alerted you." These are pretty harsh and bitter words to say about anyone. But George saying these things about John and Paul is a kind of nuclear warhead he detonated inside the Beatles. So much for the reign of peace, love and flower power in the world of the sixties. The combat for A sides and the competition for songs to be included on Beatle records was bloody and violent. The Beatles as individuals, were a species of fine young cannibals. Or as George wrote, with an assist from John, they were piggies, "clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon."

In a note for the entry in Revolution In The Head for All Things Must Pass, Ian MacDonald recorded that Mark Lewisohn had told him that George offered Isn't It A Pity? up for inclusion on Revolver. (I don't know if that's in the first edition.) It may have had a different lyric at that point, if that's even true. I subscribe to the view that the four verses of Come Together are about each of the four Beatles. That adds intrigue to what John says when Take 5 breaks down, since that's in the "Paul" verse. (And arguably he adds weight to Paul's idea of three-against-one - "one and one and one is three" - by having the Ringo, George and John verses before the guitar break and the Paul verse after it.) Mind you, I have a vague theory that Martha My Dear is addressed to John. Make of that what you will. Smile Away has Paul being insulted by three different old friends of his. Don't know what that could be about. Very speculative, but Long Haired Lady is a surprisingly downbeat love song, isn't it? ("Love is long when you're wrong." What?!) Sounds a bit like Hey Jude as well. ("Sing _your_ song, love is long, love is long.")

Hi. Nice topic. I think the feud in songs between John and Paul was rediculous and childish behaviour. It is so depressing when 2 big friends, pals, go after each other in public or in songs. Okay ....... Paul was bossy, some say inspiring like a teacher, but John lost himself. Destroyed his ego by using LSD and later on heroin. Just sad for The Beatles to split that way. If there was one Beatle, who had every right to write about how he was treated as a little brother, it is George. And Ringo ..... is just Ringo. But even his lyrics "I wonder if he is gonna play with me" in the song Early 1970 are so full of hurt. It is sad that 4 people, considered to be one person, the 4 headed person, act that way and going after each other.

Isn't it a pity has a chorus or reprise at the end where I swear some of the singers are singing Na na na na It's a Pity...in the same way as Na na na na Hey Jude. I think that was deliberate. George was saying that it's a pity that the Beatles and people in general don't always have the comeraderie displayed in songs like Hey Jude.

I somehow like to think that I Know (I Know) from Mind Games was sort of an olive branch to Paul, be nice if it were true.

@10hull 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. With Mind Games I have thought for years that the song ’I know (I know)’ is clearly about Paul but I have never seen this referred to in any review or interview. Look at the evidence: his relationship with Paul was improving in 1973, 'Dear Friend' must have touched John in '72, the lines "I know what's coming down And I know where it's coming from", "But now my eyes can see I put myself in your place As you did for me" but especially " And I know it's getting better all the time As we share in each other's minds ". It's about Paul surely

@@10hull Hello, i want to thank you for your words. I left the short comment about "I Know I Know" but i just couldn't get the right words out about the song as you did. Someone told me that the song was for Yoko and i told him no the 3rd track on side one (i can't spell it but you can look it up) was for Yoko. And yes i say it's about Paul too. I mean come on, he's not singing this to Yoko (It's getting better all the time).

Dear friend is interesting. Paul recorded that with RAM. So it's not a response to HDYS but a song he held back and chose to release after the imagine album and HDYS. Wings Wild life was an album John complimented on TV. "Paul's albums are getting better" or something to that effect. John is a strange one, I think it's reasonable to think his criticism of Paul's albums are personal not objective. That said maybe he genuinely prefered it.

Bobby Whitlock, who played on all things must pass and lived at friar park for a time maintains run of the mill is about Eric clapton and the patti situation. Not about Paul. Whitlock has some interviews on KZbin. He also said that the gnomes on the front cover were to represent the Beatles "laying around doing nothing".

Nice post...but a lot of guess work. I had heard the story how Clapton had given George a Wah Wah, which were the rage at the time. George did not write songs as metaphors... he only wrote about things he knew and felt. Think of "All those years ago" which was clearly about the Beatles.

"Run Of The Mill" is every bit as brilliant as Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street", yet somehow less celebrated. I have to disagree with you though on the song's context as I feel as it's directly sticking the knife in and I've had friends who have been through divorces and have truthfully related to the song as basically trying to throw a dead man/woman off your back after having bearing that weight for years. It's delightfully subtle and snarky and at the same time accusatory. It's brilliant! Ironically "Dear Friend" and "Too Many People" are basically from the same songbook that McCartney was working from during the RAM sessions, which have cause some to question whether or not "Dear Friend" is actually about John Lennon, although each song could certainly represent conflicting points of view about the same person. I mean there are a couple of audio interviews from around 1971 w/McCartney one being a private recorded conversation with his attorneys and the other a conversation with a Melody Maker journalist where he is absolutely furious with the other Beatles and specifically the fact that Allen Klein continued at that point to wield any degree of authority over his career. So I dare say he wasn't necessarily in the most charitable state of mind when he was composing the songs that would end up on RAM. Offhand even though it clearly wasn't intended with The Beatles in mind (although there have been some unconfirmed rumors to the contrary), John Lennon's song "Real Love" proved to be in my opinion the perfect vehicle for The Beatles to come together once again in song as the spirit of the song lends itself perfectly to both a reflection and embrace of the spirit of The Beatles even if John Lennon likely hadn't intended that to be it's fate when he starting writing it in 1976. Speaking of Lennon, although not a Lennon original, there is an outtake of "Just Because" from 1973 where he name checks all of the other Beatles as well as his fans back home in England. Yoko Ono eventually issued it as "Just Because Reprise" in 2004.

According to Luca Perasi, Dear Friend was written in '71 off the back of Lennon's Rolling Stone interview, so was a riposte to that rather than to How Do You Sleep, which didn't exist at that point. There's a Club Sandwich interview from '71 where Paul explicitly stated that Dear Friend was him saying 'Let's hang up the boxing gloves' with John.
@jldraw

@@jamesgriffithsmusic Perasi is correct, although his dating system may be slightly off as there are piano demos of "Dear Friend" which have been said to date from 1970. The track is virtually complete even at the demo stage with the lyrics and melody in place and McCartney did issue these demos last year as bonus tracks on the "Wild Life" box set.

John Heaton monkberry moon delight. The wind played a dreadful cantata, oko was credited as wind on an album. Gist of your letter. About the letter Paul got from other Beatles. It’s littered with Beatles references. I’m sure it mentions Johns piano playing on POB with its dreadful refrain. By this time on the album John knows Johns listening to every word so he starts playing singing ketchup which sounds like catch up. It’s an masterpiece. Always thought it was funny as John always critisised Paul for writing in third person like penny lane etc. But ram cuts like a knife.

@@a1974h There's a brilliant analysis of Monkberry Moon Delight in the book 'McCartney Recording Sessions' by Luca Perasi. Apparently the initial draft of the lyric made reference to a 'pillow up my nose', which links back to what Paul had said about not being able to lift his face up from the pillow when he was in the depths of his depression.

Run of the Mill was definitely from George to Paul. The song sounds like something McCartney would write, melody wise. The title is a dig at what George thought about Paul's post Beatle songs...average. Isn't It a Pity is for Paul also...you can hear Hey Jude vamping at the end of the song along with the Pity vamp. I Dig Love is for John, turning a lyric back to front which is pure Lennon. Not to put John down, but to say I can write songs too! George had two of the best teachers. Great artists they all are.
