Band maid is one of the few bands where people heaps praise on the bass player and drummer and then over time start to realize how good the guitarists and vocalists really are later. But anyone that becomes a fan and really delve into their music all realize it in time.

Great review. So to your points: 1. The "guitar too low in the mix" is an oft-debated topic. Some of us think it's Kanami being humble and wanting the bass to shine. In some ways, this sets Band-Maid apart from many of the other Japanese rock/metal bands, all who have awesome bassists and guitarists. You really hear Misa and that tone. Of course, the more I listen to it, the more I pick out the guitar until it's perfect in my head. 2. The dissonant notes in the solo. I'm no musician, don't know musical theory. But from what I gather, Kanami is one of those composers who can throw in elements that most others cannot make work, but she can. So while other guitarists may be more technically proficient and wilder shredders, Kanami creates very interesting and unique guitar compositions. 3. So happy you kept pointing out the vocals which shine so much here. I was just reading about how, in "Black Hole," Miku kept changing octaves. So she sings one line higher than Saiki, then sings the next line lower. All these things make these songs re-listenable (is that a word?) as you want to keep picking up all the various elements Band-Maid throws into their songs.

Don't miss the incoming Netflix movie 'Kate' where the maids will make a cameo and two songs! Sep 10th. Misa owns the whole album with Akane, Kanami doesn't like to be the star all the time, many bands promote guitars before anything else, she does different and I love her compositions and arrangements for that. She outshines in other songs though like HGK. Are they diverse or what? Two songs that have nothing to do with each other and both sound incredible. Listen to Akane's drums in the second verse of Black Hole, she goes nuts. And the ending is just pure madness, I feel like a Black Hole is coming for me indeed. On the other hand that groovy intro to Manners is killer. Miku's and Saiki's vocals too. Ahh I adore this band 🤘🕊️

Misa's bass tone has been spot on for years. The fact that Band Maid has never been scared to make it a prominent sound in their music is proof of that.
@Kmudaify3 жыл бұрын
Misa said she wanted to provide more "movement" with her bass...... I think she's done so. :) As for guitars too low in mix, I don't know if it's intentional or just a side effect of the equipment being used during playback while mixing. It's certainly been consistent in their blu-ray and video live audio since Conqueror. Maybe the headphones or studio monitors are too bright. Then again, maybe it's by design. An intentional effort to bring Misa and the bass forward.
@flugelhornoldman13623 жыл бұрын
Misa's bass sometimes sounds like a 3rd singer with baritone voice behind Saiki and Miku. I love it.
@Kmudaify3 жыл бұрын
@@flugelhornoldman1362 Most bass players you can classify as either melodic or rhythm. Misa is both, sometimes within the same song, sometimes within the same moment. It's amazing to hear her move from interacting and supporting Kanami (musically) over to doing the same for Kanami, from song to song or within moments of the same song. That's not normal. The way John Bonham emphasized Jimmy Page's guitar is what she is doing for Kanami, Akane, and Miku. Then she can step forward as the lead instrument. None of that is "normal". And that tone! She's got the gnarliest bass tone on the planet.
@flugelhornoldman13623 жыл бұрын
@@Kmudaify Yeah! The word "gnarly / gnarliest" is the appropriate word to express her tone. I add it to my "New Vocabulary Note". Thanks 有難う💛。 Misa also reminded me of cool sound by play with pick on bass instead of fingering or slapping. I also feel it on the play by Clint Tustin (West Kami), but I love Misa's picking a lot more. Misa's bass phrasing stands out in every song but does not disturb any other members but help them as you commented. Amazing.

Imagine not only how the crowd would react to 'Black Hole', but imagine how the crowd would react to that punch in the face almost at the end of a 2 hour show, because that's where the ladies positioned that song. It was their penultimate song that day. And for that reason alone, I take my hat off to this performance! Of course, a few more times for so many reasons concerning the song itself. :) I find it very impressive that Kanami could write such a song, but at the same time it scares me. She is already a 'riff monster', but could be the next evolutionary step after this? :) I have a strong feeling the two of you might have fun with the song 'Secret My Lips' from the ladies. But not only because the song is great, there is another special thing about it. There is a band called 'Band-Maiko' who covered this song, named it 'Secret Maiko Lips', and they did a damn good job of it. Some of us Maidiacs think that 'Band-Maiko' is the only band that could possibly hold a candle to the Maids. And after 2 songs here, a comparison between SML the original (Maids) + the cover (Maikos) would be a good idea, wouldn't it? 😇 It's just a thought that came to my mind... Oops, I almost forgot to say something about 'Manners'. Fortunately, one line of text from it is enough to say everything I think about it: 【 'Our rock never dies ever. Forever!' - from BAND-MAID 'Manners' 】🕊️ ... 😁🙋🏻♂️

Just about the bass: Misa is one of the most creative, active, talented bassists alive. Her tone is first from a Black Cloud 5-string, amp head Orange AD200 Bass Mk 3, and her live show cab is typically an Orange OBC 410 (4x10) 600 watt Bass speaker cabinet, stack of Two. And about a dozen effects pedals to call on. Beyond that, look on top of that Orange stack and there will generally be something alcoholic, from beer to Jim Beam whiskey, and she keeps her timing keyed to the drums by playing in stocking feet so she can feel Akane's beats directly through the floor. She has been said to play "lead bass."

Soooooo happy to see you reacting to Band Maid and this pair of songs in particular!!! The intro to Manners is something they added for the live recording, the official MV drops the druim and bass and just starts with the main burst of sound. As for Miku's little guitar bends at around 3:22, it's something that she didn't feel she was able to play well enough and Kanami actually played it for the album. It just shows how far our little pigeon has advanced with her guitar playing! Oh, and Black Hole was #21 of a 22 song set. Such amazing stamina and confidence to play that at the end of your set. I dream of being able to see them do it live someday. A great analysis and reaction and I appreciate the honesty. Black Hole is a somewhat experimental piece for them where they can push the limits of their skills and what the band sounds like. I don't know if I would frame it as a song that I like so much as a song that simply blows me away every time I listen.

Good point. I love her subtle pushing of pitch to where she chooses. It only underlines to me their Japanese perspective. I think people forget that although they play often-western sounding rock, they bring the additional palette of Asian musical "colors" which include half tones BETWEEN the western half-step between notes. They are so rock, but also, so Japanese. They bring the toolkits of both cultures.
