I really appreciate that this song doesn’t go extremely high. It’s alto friendly. Personally, the ending “miracle” high note was enough climax for me. Like that one note makes me wanna cry lol. The context also helps, because she’s the only one without a power, making her a more “normal” or “relatable” character. So her voice being imperfect and not an open belt makes her different from the typical powerhouses we see in musicals. I felt like I could be her. That’s what I appreciate about this song 💕

I don't know if the songs originally written that way or if they just really loved Stephanie Beatriz as Maribel and then brought the songs into her range ( I think it's probably hard for her to sing those higher notes so they wanted the songs to be comfortable for her), but I really like the way they did it too.

I’m an alto and can’t sing her super high note at the end. Luckily, my son is seven years old and always happy to step in for that part 😆 Honestly, every song in this movie is so lovingly crafted and my family can’t get enough of any of them. Each song lends itself beautifully to real emotions that everyone can relate to, and that’s why it’s my favorite Disney movie.

This is NOT the "Let it Go" of Encanto. Let it go was a song about freedom, this is a song about being trapped. Elsa sang more open and upbeat at the end because she was finally free. Everything about Mirabel is tight. She hides her feelings, she puts on a brave face, she tries so hard to just be part of her family. This song is her want song. Her voice is tight because of the pain behind the words. I honestly hear her on the verge of tears through the beginning of the song. It is an amazing portrayal of how emotion changes everything, ESPECIALLY your voice.

With Lin-Manuel Miranda coaching her, I can almost promise you there's a reason she sings at the same note for each repetition of "Open your eyes." The whole song is her singing about waiting and being stuck in one place and never being able to move forward from the moment that has so far defined her life. That's probably something to do with it.

She's only 15 years old and honestly despite the fact she's not belting it out it's still one of the most emotional songs I've ever heard from a Disney movie. So, this is my take. Lin is good at interpreting the character. The constant battle of pulling and pushing. This is in Burn, Waiting on a Miracle and Wait for it. Specially Wait for it, you can hear it here too. Like you said, you want them to let it GO! but they can't, without risking family or tradition, or society. The song and the melody gives you that frustration of wanting to do something and cant do it.

Note him being good at interpreting the character becomes super prominent when you know that Lin actually asked to be a part of the making of the movie as early as possible to the point he actually had a big hand in shaping the story (The two co-directors and Lin shared how being a part of a big family shaped them, thus making the family the core part of the narrative, and Lin inspired the setting because of his general background culturally. That last bit is not 100% accurate hence general.)
@Wigfield84
@Wigfield84 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! The reason Lin is a songwriter that even some people who normally don’t like musicals tend to latch onto, is because he writes songs to fit the characters… the character always comes first. He sits in the character and writes until it sounds true. It isn’t always gonna make the most technically perfect song then, but it will be extremely relatable and honest.

I think the repeated 'open your eyes, open your eyes' part is sung the same pitch each time and doesn't build because that's the point; she's constantly trying to get people to notice what she's trying to do and help and she's constantly overlooked, especially by her grandmother (who she's singing to in that moment); she's banging her head against a brick wall and not getting through to them, so I think it's a conscious decision to have the melody hang like that. The whole thing is an 'I want' song, for absolute sure, but there's a further layer of absolute frustration and hurt given to her by her family as well compared to something like Go The Distance or Part Of Your World

Abuela is always telling them open their eyes to share the miracle with them. But come the end I think she realized the miracle wasn’t hers and she had to open HER eyes to see it’s for the family entire. Open your eyes is a recurring theme in the movie. This song feels much more real and personal than Let it Go. Don’t get me wrong I love Let it Go but there’s a lot about her coming out of her shell finally in a space where she can be free after so long while Waiting On a Miracle is Mirabel still stuck… wanting to let it out but being forced to keep it all in to please the family like Elsa did before her big song. Not to mention that wasn’t another factor to not belting because of the character voice? Like how most of the singing was kind (i forgot the word) of, “in character” throughout the movie. Whether that’s Mirabel or anyone else. I’m no expert, but I assume you can only go so high and away from that chosen voice (the “up in the nose” voice) when singing without kind of “losing” it🤷‍♀️

I feel when most people say this is the "Let it Go!" of Encanto they mean it's the standard "finding yourself" that Disney is known for. Where they have a principal character belt out their intentions or shed what's holding them back. It's a trope for musicals, but in terms of voice Idina Menzel is pretty nasal in Let it Go (she gets so much better in Into the Unknown and Show Yourself), but then again Elsa's a grown woman while Mirabel is a 15 year old who has a high nasal based voice. I think the parts where you hear the open vocals here are Stephanie Beatriz's real vocals.

I think judging these songs/singers outside the context of the film’s narrative misses the mark. A good song in a film reveals something about the character and advances the narrative. I don’t know much about Stephanie Beatriz’ singing background but I think this song appropriately conveys Mirabel’s pent up pain and childhood trauma. A triumphant vocal as in Let it Go or plaintive yearning like Part or Your World would not work here.

She appeared in the heights so she has worked with Lin before plus he had a cameo on Brooklyn 99 so they are good friends. She is an accomplished singer, actor as well as a trained dancer. Having heard how good her voice is on in the heights it's clear to me this performance was character driven and not a testament to just how well she can belt out a song. Mirabel is only 15 years old and honestly I feel this is much more emotional than it would have been had she been really stretching her vocal chords. It's kind of a rude thing to say, but I feel like you completely misunderstood the point of this song( It's a character moment, and a low one at that. This isn't Let it go, Mirabelle isn't realising anything new about herself, she doesn't get any new powers. She is kind of stuck in place with her life and other's opinions on her, and she is desperate to get out of this. But through this song she realises that she simply can't change her situation with just a wish, and... kind of gives up. That's why the song is repetitive in some places and doesn't resolve in big finale: because the issue isn't resolved. It's still here, and as long as it's there, Mirabelle can't fully let go and move on, so the whole song feels uncomfortably tense

This song was written for someone who doesn’t really have that range, so it doesn’t go as grand as Let It Go. She naturally has a lower, nasal voice. Essentially, we are comparing a song made specifically for a professional theatrical singer and one made for an actress who happens to have a nice voice. Not a good comparison. I’ll just say that the moment she goes “I’m ready cmon I’m ready, I’ve been patient and steadfast and steady” it gives me chills. I think this song is placed very well, with the held back motif, as Mirabel herself is held back by her desire to have a gift, and held back in her potential by her family. It's not a 'let it go' where she would grow, more closed but also so mucb more unsure of how or what to achieve.

I wouldn’t say this is the “Let It Go” of Encanto. The 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 “LIG” of this movie is Isabela’s “What Else Can I do?”. This is bc both characters, Elsa and Isabela, are doing the same thing (don’t know if you’ve watched Encanto yet, so I don’t wanna spoil too much😅).

the nasal aspect of Mirabel's voice is intentional. I think they wanted her voice to sound moe realistic for a 15 year old, being that the average 15-year-old is not going to be a broadway-style singer. It makes the song and the movie even moe brilliant tbh. Great video though!

i think you are a bit too harsh on this song. I wouldn't compare it to let it go. let it go has a trained broadway singer doing the singing. While Indina did a fantastic job as elsa we don't really relate to elsa nearly as much as mirabel. Stephanie has a normal vocal range that the average person can hit while Indina's pitch would take a lot of training to hit. if you watch the movie you will see there is build up to the song. Mirabel is an outcast in her family and shes portraying how hurt she is in the song you can hear the pain in her voice so there's no need to belt it's a song about being hurt and wanting to fit in with her family. The same with burn. in burn it's not meant to be belty it's another hurt song and the actors need to be actors first and portray that emotion over having the perfect range.
@Loulizabeth
@Loulizabeth 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I tend to agree while I like those songs where people really belt it out. That kind of song wouldn't actually fit here. Because the character is battling with too much insecurity and anxiety (from being compared to her sisters and cousins) for her to let loose and belt the song out at this point. I think in fact this is why so many who struggle with these things relate to this song because you can see she's not confident enough to literally "Let it Go" yet. If they were to make a sequel with songs in it. That's where I'd be thinking a belting song from her would make sense, as she's growing in confidence. And there's so much possibility with the story for sequels or maybe a Disney animated series to happen.

If you watch the making of Encanto videos you will see this song was meant to be an anti Disney Princess song. The character isn’t a perfect “princess” so neither is her hero song. There is a perfect ballad in the movie, it’s in Spanish but the language doesn’t matter, it’s so emotional you know what it’s saying. Lin wrote that one because it fit the grandparents story and he wanted to make us all cry (Dos Orguguitas).

I think hearing it in context would make more sense that there isn’t a huge build and send off. It isn’t her “coming into herself” type moment like let it go was for frozen. She’s still in her feelings and feeling like she has something to prove, she didn’t have that full break through so she doesn’t get to that point with the music either. I feel like it was a very deliberate choice.

I believe that's was the purpose they did that, the reason the song didn't open up and grow was to reflect Mirabel's character and how she feels being the outcast for not having powers. She feels constrained, so the music reflected that.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on the voice placement she uses here vs. what she's using in All Of You, at the end, where I feel like she's using a more forward, open placement, as if she's using the placement to mark Mirabel's growth not only internally but in her relationships with her family. I also think keeping the same note on "open your eyes" was deliberate because she's pleading with her abuela over and over again to just take a moment to see Mirabel, and there's a "stuck" emotion behind it that's being communicated there.
@sealink129
@sealink129 Жыл бұрын
I would argue that the level of nasal-ness in Mirabel’s voice is indicative of where she is in her (and the hero’s) journey. The songs at the beginning of the movie are more nasally because the conflict of Mirabel’s character is still present. This song has a heavy nasal sound, probably the most of the movie’s tracks, because it’s addressing the heart of Mirabel’s conflict and what’s preventing her from reaching her potential (or at least desired potential for her). She’s the only one in her family without a gift and therefore is left out and held back (like the full sound in her voice) by a sense of inferiority and by her abuela (perhaps unintentionally) singling her out as the weak and flawed link since she can’t perform miracles like the rest of her family. That nasal sound gets stronger as the conflict grows. But in the end, as the conflict gets resolved, the sound of her voice is opened up and gets fuller

You stated that you didn't listen to the songs from Encanto in order so I want to point that Waiting On A Miracle! is an "answer song" to the opening song The Family Madrigal in the first song Mirabel sings about how everyone in the Family Madrigal is "Fantasical and Magical" and how great is it to be part of the Family, in Waiting On A Miracle she exclaims "I'm Not Fine." and expresses how she really feels.

even though i partially agree with the lin manuel part (and you were able to put into words why it took me a bit more of time to love burn) i do really think in THIS case it was the better option. mirabel is the only "common" person of the family, seen as the weakest link in the chain. so it makes a lot of sense for her character to be more average as a singer. having a let it go time would break that perception of mediocrity (despite mirabel is everything but mediocre)

Let it go was a song about finding herself and its positive. This one is not, she's admitting she doesn't know who she is or what she's supposed to do making it a sad song. That's why it didn't build up as much as let it go, this one was supposed to leave a deeper longing ending as she herself is longing for acceptance.

Definitely not the 'Let It Go' of this movie, that honor goes to 'What Else Can I Do?', which I think absolutely blew Let It Go away. At least in lyrical content and story payout. Elsa sang an empowering song and then... hid in her room, except this time it was a castle. Maybe if she'd had Anna there to encourage her like Mirabel did Isabelle, they'd have had a lot less drama and heartache.

I love this song😌 I always thought that the nasal sort of singing went with her emotions like holding back her tears (I hope u know what I mean it's hard to describe) then at the end she belts the last high note and it's like she calmed down and is able to actually do something and she's not gonna cry she's going to go forward with her chin held high. Also I would of disliked it if it had 'stronger' vocals than it does, I love all the songs in this film as they are. They're more relatable and more realistic ect than old Disney films (tho I love a lot of their music too) expecially knowing what this movie is about and stuff it just makes more sense. Each character has a style which I definitely like since they aren't making their voice sound different than their normal voice and it goes with their character (if that makes sense) anyway good video but I do disagree with many of your points but each to your own😁

In the defense of "Burn" in Hamilton, there's actually an original version called "First Burn", and that one was more belty and loud, but they changed it to the current version, and i think I know why and i think it was for the best. The current version makes Eliza sound more sad, tired, and just utterly done with Hamilton, like she's so tired she doesn't even want to spend energy getting extremely angry at him, which I think was the preferred emotion Lin wanted Eliza to portray. She's withdrawing from the situation ("I'm erasing myself from the narrative") because she's just done. If they went with "First Burn" it would've made her sound more vengeful and hateful about the situation. While the angry cheated-on spouse is a justifiable reaction, exploding in anger isn't a part of Eliza's gentle character in my opinion, so "First Burn" would've felt kind of out of place, so they changed it to sound more soft. But both are honestly really good and are both favorites of mine

I'm sure you've already seen it by now but for context in case you haven't, all of the family Madrigal got special abilities from a magical candle except for Mirabel. When she was Antonio's age, she had a ceremony too, but she did not receive a special ability, she was the only one in the family who did not get one. It made her sad because not only was her sister Isabella treated as the golden perfect child, but her abuela flat out neglected her and started treating her horribly after she did not get an ability I mean you see in this song they don't even invite her to be in the family photo

A bit of trivia about Stephanie Beatriz's singing in this song - she was VERY pregnant at the time, and was actually going into labor. She'd noticed the contractions that morning as she got to the studio, but didn't say anything because she "didn't want anyone to freak out". She successfully finished recording, went to the hospital, and gave birth to her daughter the next day. I can say from personal experience that the hormonal changes from pregnancy REALLY impacts your voice - my own singing range dropped almost a full octave from where I was, and now I sing low alto / contralto. I've no doubt she made good use of the contractions to add even more impact to Mirabel's barely-suppressed emotional pain, and it makes me empathize with her even more.

we don’t need a showing off your voice moment in every song, sometimes emotion is better than that. having a great belt doesn’t make you connect with the emotions the character’s feeling and that’s why people love lin manuel miranda music. he makes you feel those emotions, he makes it sound relatable, natural and organic. i have to strongly disagree with that final opinion. personally if someone can sing, that’s great! but i want to feel what they’re singing. that’s what matters for me :)
