@@rocknroll20024 The Larson family is VERY involved with Jonathan's legacy. Both Allan and Nan would go and speak to the different productions, even high schools, thanking them for keeping Jon's memory alive. After they passed it was Jon's sister, Julie who keeps the legacy going.

So technically, he died a few hours after the last dress rehearsal which was also the day of RENT's first off-broadway preview performance. The show was canceled for that night and the cast and crew instead did sing through in memorial. The most crushing part of the story is that he had been having chest pains for days prior and even sought medical attention, but he was misdiagnosed and never got a relatively simple surgery that in all likelihood would have saved his life.

What bothers me is that every time he went to the hospital, the ER wrote off his chest pain as food poisoning and showed him the door. Why? He didn’t have insurance and it was obvious he wasn’t a big fish. He wasn’t going to make the hospital any money by treating him. Perhaps this is a bit morbid, but there’s even a story about Jonathan’s last week or so in a medical journal: “The Journal of Urgent Care Medicine.” The article is called “The Story of Jonathan - One Week in January.” I think this made it into this particular journal because whoever wrote this article is trying to teach its readers how to diagnose someone like Jonathan. That no, you don’t write it off as food poisoning and shove the patient out the door.

I love that this song illustrates something Andrew Garfield has said in interviews before and after this film was released. We all have unfinished songs. That within us all, we only have a finite amount of time to sing our songs and try to get them out in the world. Dr. Wayne Dyer always said, "Don't let your music die inside of you." What unfinished songs did Jonathan Larson have? That's a big part of the tragedy. But the triumph is what songs he left for all of us as his legacy! The "Why" performance also took place at the end of the first week of filming because they only had use of the Delacorte Theater location in Central Park for that short window of time. Just think about those circumstances for a moment and it becomes even more clear what a fantastic performance that was. The way Lin tells it in an interview, they got their "Hathaway take" on the second take of filming that scene.

Yup same for me. It's so much better because it's kind of unexpected. We get that final dialogue about what Johnathan did and his impact, and then the narrator (was it Alexandra?) stating he still had "more" to do... all over that piano intro. Those few notes building up, unexpectedly, to something brilliant.

The first time I watched this movie I cried my eyes out. Jon Larson gave the world a gift beyond measure with Rent; it’s more than likely that Rent and it’s message saved many LGBT+ lives and gave them hope. I was honestly so heartbroken when I thought about what else he might have given us if he’d had more time. Rent changed my life at 19 years old, and tick tick BOOM did it again at 27. I think it helped that he hadnt sung before and he was just like a fresh ball of clay for the vocal coach to mold whereas singers are harder to break of bad habits and teach new ones because they are so stuck in their ways (like old clay) . I also think that being half British/half American and great with accents helps because he has that ability to change things up and flow between sounds.

The end always gives me chills. Since the musical starts with Jonathan refusing to turn 30, denying it, questioning his life decisions, him playing “Happy Birthday” at the end shows his acceptance of getting older, albeit after he feels like he has accomplished something with a successful workshop for “Superbia”. After making a name for himself, having a, in his eyes, major accomplishment (not to say it wasn’t major, just that there were likely other accomplishments that he himself undermined and didn’t give due credit), does he feel like he can turn 30. That was his whole point prefacing “30/90”, that his parents did so much by the time they were 30, that he felt that he comparatively had done nothing with his life.

It was drama school. The teacher/professor assigned him a difficult song and then gave him a failing grade instead of encouraging him. So he just believed he can’t sing. LMM on the other hand thought he could do it. As long as he isn’t tone deaf as he did handle a 7 hour play and didn’t lose his voice. I wonder how LMM managed to see that he has the potential.

You need to watch "No Day But Today". It's the story of Johnny Larson, and on the RENT DVD special features. It has a little of Suburbia and Tick, Tick, Boom, and of course a lot of RENT info. I don't mean to react to it necessarily, but it gives a lot of context and shows why John was so important to musical theater even though he never saw one of his shows on Broadway.

Quick correction, Lin Manuel didn’t write the music, these songs were made by Johnatan when he was writing tick tick boom and though it never hit Broadway the production has actually been done by different theatres. The way they put it together here was to use those songs to tell Johnathans story while also celebrating his music. Lin Manuel directed the movie and coached all of the singers vocally but he himself never actually wrote it.

I've noticed there's a video of 30/90 sung by Larsen up on youtube and it's fascinating how well Andrew portrayed him. I love your videos, I've been watching them for awhile. I love how you break everything down. I meant to write this when you did the first video.... anyways, the reason you don't see Andrew in any other musicals, is, he learned how to sing and dance JUST for this role. The story of how Lin ended up casting him is kind of hilarious (you should look up them talking about it during the promotion of the film), Lin was told that Andrew was a great singer and could dance... Andrew couldn't. So, when Andrew said yes, he kind of hung up the phone and said, oh ****, I've got to find a vocal coach and dance teacher NOW. He learned it all in a little over a year. Zero knowledge to Tick Tick BOOM in one year. You should also absolutely look up the guest appearances in the film for the song Sunday. Everyone in the diner was an icon in Broadway. If you look at the credits of the film, they even list them all under the title of Sunday Legends. Also, Lin didn't write any of this music, this is ALL the music Johnathan wrote for his Musical Tick Tick BOOM, the precursor to RENT. we hadn't heard him in other musicals because he didn't sing before This movie. Lin Manuel Miranda asked him if he could sing because he thought he would be perfect for this role. he said yes even though he didn't and went to a vocal couch in to learn.

Actually Lin found a vocal coach for him. I’m amazed that Lin would trust someone who wasn’t a singer for his directorial debut.

Jonathan apparently went to two hospitals who misdiagnosed him/sent him home before he died; I don't love the 'it's like he knew it' thing. If anything, losing his friends to HIV/AIDS made him more aware of how fleeting time can be. I think he also compared his own career to his idols, and was worried that he wasn't going to reach the same success. I love how Sondheim was a mentor to him. (ALSO, Andrew worked with a great voice teacher Liz Caplan and Lin & co. to sing this, and it's so great how he continuously credits them for their parts in accessing his voice in such a beautiful way).
