This song is about how many Vietnam war veterans turned to heroin to escape the horrors they had witnessed. Specifically in this song you follow a veteran to his death via overdose. Black Sabbath are iconic for a reason. Not just musically but lyrically they were at a caliber most can only dream to have.

Geezer, Ozzy, Tony and Bill. Bassist Geezer Butler did most of the songwriting for Black Sabbath, but Ozzy Osbourne brought life to his words, while Tony Iommi's Guitar work, with his missing fingertips from an accident while working in a metal shop, and the monster Bill Ward on Drums made the whole sound complete. Sabbath was WAY more musical than some gave them credit for. Along with Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, they created the genre of Heavy Metal. Thanks guys.

Sabbath was from a dirty industrial town and unlike the other bands of their time singing about flowers and love, they saw things differently. Instead of beautiful dreams they wrote about nightmares. The first song, the first album and the band got their names from a 1964 Boris Karloff horror movie called "Black Sabbath".

Ohh man you could not have picked a better song as your first listen!!!!!!!! Bill ward is a beast on the drums!!!!!! Deep jazz roots, but don’t all the best drummers start with jazz? A lot of people tried to peg Sabbath as a “ satanic “ band. They explored dark themes, drug addiction, mental illness, war…… etc etc but they were not satanic. They wanted to make “scary” music. They were all from a depressed grimy industrial city in England. They just couldn’t relate to all the flower power, love and peace of the late 60’s. They went their own way, and I for one am grateful they did. They have so many great songs, you started with my favorite!!!!!!! This song is about a Vietnam vet falling into addiction.

Many will suggest War Pigs, Paranoid, NIB, Ironman, Snowblind, Children of the Grave, or even Black Sabbath.(the song that gave them their name) All of which are great choices. You know your Black Sabbath. There were so many up coming new and great hard rock bands popping up back then it was hard to keep up with buying all the new albums or seeing the numerous bands out there in concert money wise. One things for sure, Black Sabbath was always a "definite go see" band.

@@NAIATHEDRAGON My favourite tune for decades. Might I suggest not starting with the version that has the fan made, and very excellent, video with it and get a version with lyrics only. I've seen too many reactions where they get caught up in the emotive visuals which does take away from the music but is worth seeing. Music first. Solis advice I assure you my good man.

Could you please react to one of the greatest bands ever (in my humble opinion): The Pretenders. They’ve done a lot of great tunes including “Brass In Pocket”, “Message Of Love”, “My City Was Gone”, “Kid”, ”Back On The Chain Gang”, “I’ll Stand By You”, “Tatooed Love Boys”, and “Private Life” among many others. PLEASE! The lead singer Chrissie Hynde is a great singer and songwriter. P.S. - Their first album is considered by many to be one of the greatest debuts EVER.
