The album is inspired in a Spanish medieval tale called “ Flamenca” and it describes an abusive relationship. Every “cap” refers to a chapter of that abusive relationship. If you look at the translation of each chapter it makes sense. I ‘m sure you will double enjoy the album knowing this info. Sorry for my English, big hug from an Spanish girl living in the UK.

Hey Luscent! I found your channel very recently and I'm really enjoying your reviews!. I'm a huge fan of Rosalia since I discovered El Mal Querer, became kind of obsessed with that album xD and then since the Motomami release, my soul was sold 😅. I'll love to share a little research I did of the concept of this album, which I've already shared on other albums, just to help new fans understand the story: (The story is based on a novel named "Flamenca" from the XIV century, about a woman in a toxic/abusive relationship) «Malamente» (Cap.1: Augurio): "Malamente" does not have an exact translation in english, in the context of the album means something like "Badly love" or "loved in a wrong way". "Augurio" means Omen. So this songs is sort of like a premonition she has when she meets this man, all the bad feelings she gets and even the omen of a gypsy. The video is full of symbolism from Rosalia's background and Flamenco. «Que no salga la luna» (Cap.2: Boda): "don't let the moon rise" - (cap 2: Weeding). You can guess they married. Is a typical flamenco wedding and the groom sings about how lucky he was to find her, he says: "like the blades of a knife, her eyes shined when I gave her the ring". Only in a small verse you hear the bride trying to pick a diamond ring and the chorus claims: "If there is someone here who opposes, don't raise your voice. Don't let the bride listen. Don't let the moon rise, it doesn't have to". By the end the groom sing: "whether she wants it or not, she will be with me 'til she dies". The music almost imitates a funeral march. «Pienso en tu mirá» (Cap.3: Celos): "I think of your look" (or more like "I think of your eyes" (Cap.3: Jealousy). The whole song is from the POV of the husband. "I'm afraid when you go out smiling on the street cause everyone can see the dimples on your face. And of the air when it blows, for lifting your hair. And of the gold that dresses you for being tied to your neck. And from the sky and the moon, cause you want to look at them. Even from the water you drink when it wets your lips". The chorus gives name to the song: "I think of your look, your look aiming a bullet to the chest". The video is really beautiful. «De aquí no sales» (Cap.4: Disputa): "You don't leave from here" (Cap.4: Dispute). My favorite one. Talks about the violence in the relationship. Rosalia said she was almost embarrassed and scared to release this song for how violent it felt. The instrumental part feels almost like we are witnessing the dispute. "You don't get out of here. It hurt me way more than is hurting you. Make no mistake with me. With the back of the hand I'll make it very clear to you"... That part always give me chills. In the video you can see her drowning in a pit filled with engine oil. «Reniego» (Cap.5: Lamento): "Denial - negation-" (Cap.5: Sorrow). "I laugh on the outside and I cry inside". This song is a Rosalia's tribute to Camaron de la isla, a famous Spanish singer, descendant of gypsies. «Preso» (Cap.6: Clausura): "Prisoner" (Cap.6: Closing). It's an interlude. Spanish actress Rossy de Palma reflects in a little monologue on a past abusive relationship she had, and how she didn't even realize she was traped, until she broke free from it. «Bagdad» (Cap.7: Liturgia): "Bagdad" (Cap.7:Liturgy). This chapter reference the downfall of the wife. Rosalia said Bagdad is about a real place, a club in Spain, but some people see also a reference to the capital of Irak, a devastated city. Rosalia recorded this song and sent it to Justin Timberlake to ask his permission to use the melody of "Cry me a river". Apparently JT does not like to grant his songs to other singers, but love this one. «Di mi nombre» (Cap.8: Éxtasis): "Say my name" (Cap.8:ecstasy). This chapter it's about the sexual connections between the couple and also the submission to the lover. Rosalia said the name of the songs it's a little tribute to the Destiny's child song, cause she was a big fan when she was younger. «Nana» (Cap.9: Concepción): "Lullaby" (Cap.9: Conception). Part of the song belongs to two real spanish lullabies. It's a sad song, apparently about the conception of a unwanted child in an abusive relationship. The last two song feel like a resolution for me (the conclusion of the story): «Maldición» (Cap.10: Cordura): "Curse" (Cap.10: Sanity). "I've been told there's no way out, down this street where I'm going. They told me there's no way out... I have to find it. Even if it costs my life, Or even if I have to kill". She makes her choice and it is her life of his (literally or metaphorically). «A ningún hombre» (Cap.11: Poder): "To no man" (Chap.11: Power). It's a very empowering song, out of the violence of the rest of the album. She takes charge of her life, deciding she won't allow herself to forget what she has lived. "I consent no man to dictate my sentence. Only God can judge me. To him alone I owe obedience". "I'm going to tattoo in my skin Your initial, because it's mine. You summarized the story and the easter eggs of the album, perfectly!! 💖 I would add that this album was Rosalia’s graduation project for her college degree. And that it is also a very visual album. Each song has it’s own cover art made by spanish visual artist Filip Custic, who has also made visuals for Lil Nas X recently. And I also recommend watching the videos for the songs; it adds a lot more to the experience.

el mal querer was really experimental when it dropped because of the mix of flamenco with pop and hip hop elements and the fresh production, specially compared with the hispanic music world… her success is necesary for all the hispanic artists, so that they try to push their art and create more unique music

Flamenco was actually born from a mixture of lots of cultures, and one of the key ones where the gypsies that came from India. Thats why you found this oriental vive in the song di mi nombre. And actually you're not wrong in Nana. She's singing a lullaby to her dead child. Thats why it says "in heaven they sell shoes for barefoot angels" or something like that, her child died really young, before he could even own shoes.

For those ones that doesn't talk Spanish, the "U" after the "Q" you don't pronounce it most of the time, like in "Que", Queso you would pronounce keso, Querer Kerer, Quiero Kiero, Roquero Rokero, like in roquefort ya know, most of the times, if something is well written and the "U" is propunced you would write it with two dots ü, like pingüino (penguin) but after a Q you usually just ignore it, like the "H"

Unless is after a "C" the H you don't use it, Helado, Hermano, Hamaca, the H is silent, Chamaco, Chorro, Chica you do, there was a time our alphabet had the Ch as their own letter, like "A, B, C, CH,D,..."

Hi Dan, I have truly enjoyed your Rosalía album reactions. Your perception of the lyrics and emotional core have been spot-on absent the literal understanding of the lyrics. I have cheered you on as both an english and spanish speaker: saying: YES! he get's IT. Musically you picked up something really subtle in the beats of "Pienso In Tú Mirá". You must check out Jaime Altozano's in-depth musical analysis of "El Mal Querer". Flamenco has certain pulses per bar - but this song has a particuluar variation in the chorus. The second verse is cut short 2 pulses. In addition to creating variation in the same verse repeated 3 times - it creates a tension. The verse jumps at you - it is like at the jealous lover encroaching and the next verse start before you can finish singing the second one. Rosalia is very underrated she is one of the most talented if not the most talented female artist right now she writes lyrics and composes , sings plays with new sounds beat and combines them and makes it her own !!! That’s what a real artist does she just doesn’t sample like all the other artist nothing different in other words just followers she is one to look out 4 caz I really think she can change the route Latin music is going!! Loved your reaction. Just wanted to point out that in Spanish any time you see "que" in a word it is pronounced as "KE" so El Mar Querer is pronounced EL MAL KERER.

Its interesting to see the perspective of someone who listened El Mal Querer after Motomami. Some say Motomami is a regression from EMQ, but the seeds are there. The splitted, even esquizophrenic song structures are there in both albums, mashing things that were far from each other. EMQ has a lot of background to it, it is a career ending thesis, where references are samples instead. Its also interesting to see that many english speakers dont know about the flamenco "sound", its understandable because it comes from arabic, eastern origins. But for spanish speakers (im not from spain, not even europe) the flamenco sound its vey "natural", like it was always there. Love that Rosalia are crossing that border, that this splitted music are making two cultural speaking worlds finally collide.

you should react to her other album “Los Ángeles”, it’s a flamenco album about death(sounds grim ik but it’s a very beautiful album). that album was her final project to graduate from music school in Spain! mini explanation on flamenco:> Flamenco by itself has distinct types of song, such as Bulerias, Alegrias, Fandangos and many more. The essence of flamenco is Cante (Spanish: song or sing). They fall into three categories; Cante jondo(“Profound song” or “deep song”), Cante intermedio (“intermediate song,” also called Cante flamenco), and Cante chico (“light song”). These styles of Flamenco come with different purposes as well. While most Flamenco songs are used to express love, pain, and regret, it is also used to interpret or reinterpret stories. In which these styles would often be used for. After the mid 19th century, Flamenco song was usually accompanied by guitar music and a Palo seco (Spanish: “dry stick”, a stick that was beat on the floor to keep time) and a dancer performing a series of choreographed dance steps and improvised styles. As Flamenco is often played and sung in the streets of Spain, not much is needed to do so. Many Flamenco performers add a type of clapping, which is more common now. So much so, that people in Spain participate in performances as well. Flamenco is a complex art form incorporating poetry, singing (Cante), guitar playing (Toque), dance (Baile), polyrhythmic hand-clapping (Palmas) and finger snapping (Pitos). It often features a from of call and response known as “Jaleo,” a form of “hell raising,” involving hand clapping, foot stomping, and audiences’ encouraging shouts. As a lot of people from Spain know these aspects of Flamenco, it is common to hear audiences clapping and ad-lib in the form of “Jaleo”. rosalías sings flamenco, *new flamenco, bachata, and pop. she is very versatile! *as Flamenco grew in popularity back in Spain, artists started to mix different genres into Flamenco, such as Jazz and Opera. And now Flamenco artists have started infusing genres like Pop and Reggaeton, which created the musical genre known as New Flamenco, which is what i would classify the majority of El Mal Querer. Her more Flamenco type songs would be Bulerías(MOTOMAMI), Que No Salga La Luna(El Mal Querer), Juro Que( Single), El Redentor(Los Ángeles), Maldicíon(El Mal Querer), De Plata(Los Ángeles), Aunque Es De Noche(Los Ángeles) and Que Se Muere Que Se Muere(Los Ángeles). I loved his comment about the procedural repetition of music and freestyling. It’s actually something that all the folk music from southern europe have in common, like flamenco, fado, tammurriata, pizzica, taranta etc. you have a basic progression, both vocally and instrumentally, and you progressively build up on it changing it bit by bit. It’s almost as if to get you progressively more in a trance, in a immersion in music and dance. Also keep in mind that many of these music styles (almost all of them actually) involve some kind of religiosity, mysticism or substance consuming (mostly alcohol) while performing. It’s a ritual basically, and the music is the tool to get lost in it. It’s something we all share in the Mediterranean I think. (Spanish has a verb conjugation system that doesn't exist in English) The meaning of the verb is to want/desire/love depending on context. There are five (Spanish speakers from Spain have six) tenses of conjugation. Yo=I. tú=you. Él/ella/ustedes= he/she/formal version of he or she. Nosotros=us. Vosotros=you all (only used in Spain). Ellos/ellas/ustedes=they (masculine)/they (feminine)/they formal. All verbs end in -ar, -er, or -ir, and depending on tense the ending changes. For example the word quere conjugates as follows; yo quiero=I want, tú quieres=you want, él/ella/usted quiere=he/she/they(singular) want, nos queremos=we want, ellos/ella/ustedes quieren=they(plural) want.

It’s cool that you didn’t look up the concept because it allowed for you to form own thought and think more outside the box. You were probably closer in thought to someone who had……. I feel like you need to do the trilogy. I worked my way backwards as well. started with motomami and fell in love with it. I really enjoyed malquerer but not as much initially. I sort of had to spend more time with the songs. Los Ángeles took my somewhere else and it was like one song at a time I would get obsessed with one song dive into it for like a week before moved on to the next. They songs are so complex and beautiful you almost can’t take them in in one sitting. It’s sort of like listening to a good old jazz álbum. I really think Los Ángeles is going to be a timeless record. After getting into that her other albums actually lost a little bit of lustre for me. That’s how much I love that album

I wished everyone who reacted to El Mal Querer on KZbin would’ve been aware that this was a concept album based on Flamenca, the 13th-century anonymous romance novel. Everyone kept questioning about chapters and then confusing the male/female perspectives, therefore missing out on the masterful writing of the songs. Cool & fun reaction to watch overall but a bit frustrating on that aspect I mentioned.

It's super experimental, it's just a different kind of experimental. What she has done with Flamenco here is mind-blowing. Confidence? No, she wasn't lacking confidence, this was her thesis. So let's not get it twisted. You should check out her first Los Angeles which is more traditional . Pienso en tu mirar is not what you thought. It's about the male in the relationship not wanting her to go out at all so nobody can see her dimples, so she can not entice men with her mirar, meaning with her 👀 and ends up locking her up which leads directly into the next Cap/Chapter/Song which represents the physical abuse and escape.
