Ok, so here's some context on the lyrics cause it's definitely something that you need to take into account when you listen to this album. It's a concept album and yes, is based on Flamenca, a novel from the XIV century. It tells a story: . «Malamente» (Cap.1: Augurio): "Malamente" does not have an exact translation in english, in the context of the album means something like "Badly loved" or "loved in the wrong way". "Augurio" means Omen. So this songs is sort of like a premonition she has when she meets this man, all the bad feelings she gets and even the omen of a gypsy. The video is full of symbolism from Rosalia's background and Flamenco. «Que no salga la luna» (Cap.2: Boda): "don't let the moon rise" - (cap 2: Weeding). You can guess they married. Is a typical flamenco wedding and the groom sings about how lucky he was to find her, he says: "like the blades of a knife, her eyes shined when I gave her the ring". Only in a small verse you hear the bride trying to pick a diamond ring and the chorus claims: "If there is someone here who opposes, don't raise your voice. Don't let the bride listen. Don't let the moon rise, it doesn't have to". By the end the groom sing: "whether she wants it or not, she will be with me 'til she dies". The music almost imitates a funeral march. «Pienso en tu mirá» (Cap.3: Celos): "I think of your look" (or more like "I think of your eyes" (Cap.3: Jealousy). The whole song is from the POV of the husband. "I'm scared when you go out smiling on the street cause everyone can see the dimples on your face. And of the air when it blows, for lifting your hair. And of the gold that dresses you for being tied to your neck. And from the sky and the moon, cause you want to look at them. Even from the water you drink when it wets your lips". The chorus gives name to the song: "I think of your look, your look aiming a bullet to the chest". The video is really beautiful. «De aquí no sales» (Cap.4: Disputa): "You don't leave from here" (Cap.4: Dispute). My favorite one. Talks about the violence in the relationship. Rosalia said she was almost embarrassed and scared to release this song for how violent it felt. The instrumental part feels almost like we are witnessing the dispute. "You don't get out of here. It hurt me way more than is hurting you. Make no mistake with me. With the back of the hand I'll make it very clear to you", it's sang like a threat... That part always give me chills. In the video you can see her drowning in a pit filled with engine oil. «Reniego» (Cap.5: Lamento): "Denial - negation-" (Cap.5: Sorrow). "I laugh on the outside and I cry inside". This song is a Rosalia's tribute to Camaron de la isla, a famous Spanish singer, descendant of gypsies. «Preso» (Cap.6: Clausura): "Prisoner" (Cap.6: Closing). It's an interlude. Spanish actress Rossy de Palma reflects in a little monologue on a past abusive relationship she had, and how she didn't even realize she was traped, until she broke free from it. «Bagdad» (Cap.7: Liturgia): "Bagdad" (Cap.7:Liturgy). This chapter reference the downfall of the wife. Rosalia said Bagdad is about a real place, a club in Spain, but some people see also a reference to the capital of Iraq, a devastated city. Rosalia recorded this song and sent it to Justin Timberlake to ask his permission to use the melody of "Cry me a river". Apparently JT does not like to grant his songs to other singers, but loved this one. «Di mi nombre» (Cap.8: Éxtasis): "Say my name" (Cap.8:ecstasy). This chapter it's about the sexual connections between the couple and also the submission to the lover. Rosalia said the name of the songs it's a little tribute to the Destiny's child song, cause she was a big fan when she was younger. «Nana» (Cap.9: Concepción): "Lullaby" (Cap.9: Conception). Part of the song belongs to two real spanish lullabies. It's a sad song, apparently about the conception of a unwanted child in an abusive relationship. The last two song feel like a resolution for me (the conclusion of the story): «Maldición» (Cap.10: Cordura): "Curse" (Cap.10: Sanity). "I've been told there's no way out, down this street where I'm going. They told me there's no way out... I have to find it. Even if it costs my life, Or even if I have to kill". She makes her choice and it is her life of his (literally or metaphorically). «A ningún hombre» (Cap.11: Poder): "To no man" (Chap.11: Power). It's a very empowering song, out of the violence of the rest of the album. She takes charge of her life, deciding she won't allow herself to forget what she has lived. "I consent no man to dictate my sentence. Only God can judge me. To him alone I owe obedience". "I'm going to tattoo in my skin Your initial, because it's mine. To remember forever what you did to me one day". Hope you enjoyed the listening as much as we do every singe time we listen to this album. XO from Buenos Aires!

i think this album definitely needs to be listened reading the lyrics. this album is the story of a 13th century abusive relationship…with the newer sound elements, she asks you to consider if the story is really from the past? bringing attention to how the way we love (or fail to) hasn’t changed as much in literal centuries… “el malquerer”: very roughly translating to “the bad loving”

I fucking love the use of roaring motorcycle engines as percussive elements in De Aqui No Sales 🔥 On second thought, I fucking love everything about that song. The rhythm, her vocal harmonies with herself, the long thumping vocal breakdown at the end. So damn good.

The album without the lyrics just isn't the same. Every verse is just pronounced in a way that has a meaning, she sounds vulnerable, powerful, threatening or whatever the verse needs. The music is also symbolic in a lot of ways, it helps telling the story and everything has a meaning. For all of this it's a great album.

On MALDICIÓN Cap.10: Cordura, the sounds of her screaming and then the knives are her killing the abuser, and the voice in the background is him agonizing saying goodbye to her, she says “I left a blood bath over the floor that takes me back to the first day that I said I love you (blood when losing her virginity), I should’ve known what I was saying…”, and then the knives again, she kills him and then that voice stops. One of my favorite parts of the album.

love that confrontation in Maldición. Hope she sings it live in her new tour. I think that Diablo from Motomami has a similar concept, musical and sound elements representating confrontation between her (or the character) and a "demon". She is the winner in Maldición, ending the album triumphant, but in Diablo, she losses to her new prisoner, "La Fama". The moment of the "duel" is the split moment in both songs. In Diablo, defeated by the demon, she goes on the most splitted tracks of Motomami until, conceptually, "accept" her defeat in La Combi Versace. Thats is how I interpret Motomami´s narrative arc.

This album has a narrative to it and the cry me a river interpolation in Bagdad is intentional as that songs talks about a low moment in the characters life and the video has her crying and flooding the whole room to the point where she drowns.

This album might sound good for English speakers. But in Spanish is also poetic, modern and traditional at the same time, it has such a unique proposal. I mean, the words she uses are beautiful, that's why it sounds classy, she doesn't use nowadays slang. That's why some might prefer this over Motomami, Motomami is more accurate to her age, it is more "mainstream" i think

“El mal querer”, her voice is a vehicle used to sing stories about other ppl but in “Motomami”she sings about herself, what she does feel, what is in her head, her “transformation” as she says in “Saoko”. In G3 N15 she explains to her nephew how really is life in LA, as she got stuck abroad working on this project and couldnt travel home due the Pandemic. In Diablo, she sings about the hate that she got from some fans who loved her first album and ”did not understand” the second one, they are represented by the “evil” voices in the song. Expect the unexpected with Rosalia. Both albums are amazing, so different that you can not even compare them. But the “amount of craziness” in Motomami makes it a masterpiece.

It was my love for this album that had me apprehensive about Motomami when it was first announced. I was scared she was going to become a sort of indistinguishable pop reggaeton artist, blending in with the likes of Maluma, Ozuna, J. Balvin, etc. while leaving behind her rich flamenco sound that I grew to love on this and her previous album. But thankfully, as I mentioned in the comments to your Motomami reaction, she instead did a fucking masterful job of wedding flamenco and reggaeton together.

So glad you got round to this album! The 'barely scratching the surface ' comment was very appropriate because you've only really just listened to the music. To get the full effect as intended you need to understand the lyrics and watch the videos. Rosalía once said in an interview that when she created this album, she was also visualising what she wanted to show in her videos. There's a dichotomy in them, an aspect where it tells the story alongside the song but on the other side there is a feminist or survivor side. She packs them with symbolism and references to art and are really worth a watch. Not all the songs in this album have videos, but the ones that do are outstanding!

So glad you reacted to this concept album, which I love. You have other comments here that explain it in great detail. Brief description: "Inspired by the 13th century novel “Flamenca,” which recounts the tale of a woman whose jealous husband locks in her in a tower as punishment for her supposed adultery, El Mal Querer originally began as Rosalía's final undergraduate project in flamenco studies." Her videos to some of the songs on this album and other singles not on either album are top notch and definitely worth seeing, and seeing many, many times. Videos from songs on this album to check out: Di Mi Nombre, De Aqui No Sales, Malamente, Baghdad (love, love love this video). Other videos that are must sees: TKN, Juro Que, A Pale, Aute Cuture, Aunque Es De Noche. So many more. But you must see her live performances of De Plata (Directo Sevilla), where you'll really see her vocal chops, also Me Quedo Contigo, La Llorona (Live), and so many more. But De Plata (Directo Sevilla) and Me Quedo Contigo will blow you away.

I would recommend checking out the english translation on Genius, it’s pretty decent, when you have time. This is a concept album based on a 13th century novel, Flamenca, and each song is a chapter in the Story. It would make the listening experience more enjoyable and help you understand some of the musical quirks, like the use of swords, better. Overall the lyrics give you a deeper appreciation of the album. The videos are also cool and full of symbolism!

i know it’s a first reaction but i wish you atleast read the genius description while/after initially listening to each track. i LOVE how you connect with music despite not understanding the lyrics, but imo having a general idea of the song topics is important given the language barrier. i absolutely love this album, listen after listening it literally NEVER gets old.

You need to watch some of her music videos. She's just as talented with her visuals and honestly there's no one out there that can match her and Canada when they team up.

13:16 haha your reaction. 😂 Those are like video game or Japanese fighting sounds. Then she’s saying “I’ve left a mess behind of blood 🩸 on the floor” I can’t tell if that’s the male or woman perspective from the book, but basically someone snapped in the relationship and either killed or badly hurt

I asked on the last Rosalia reaction so hopefully this time you see this. But, Please check out Stromae’s new album ‘Multitude’. He’s a Belgian French speaking artist and producer whom makes songs through various serious topics through the perspective of various characters. A perfect example of which I’d say is the song ‘Fils de Joie’ which is on the album but I would recommend reacting to the music video first with English closed captions so you get a rough idea of what you’re letting yourself in for. Plus I would recommend his 2013 ground breaking album ‘Raciné Carée’ which has tracks such as ‘Formidablé’, ‘Papaoutai’ and ‘Quand C’est’ which are all beautiful constructed tracks with incredible music videos. Honestly, I’d put him on the level of a Kanye or Tyler his music is inspiring yet impressive.
