Ok, so here's some context on the lyrics cause it's definitely something that you need to take into account when you listen to this album. It's a concept album and yes, is based on Flamenca, a novel from the XIV century. It tells a story: «Malamente» (Cap.1: Augurio): "Malamente" does not have an exact translation in english, in the context of the album means something like "Badly loved" or "loved in the wrong way". "Augurio" means Omen. So this songs is sort of like a premonition she has when she meets this man, all the bad feelings she gets and even the omen of a gypsy. The video is full of symbolism from Rosalia's background and Flamenco. «Que no salga la luna» (Cap.2: Boda): "don't let the moon rise" - (cap 2: Weeding). You can guess they married. Is a typical flamenco wedding and the groom sings about how lucky he was to find her, he says: "like the blades of a knife, her eyes shined when I gave her the ring". Only in a small verse you hear the bride trying to pick a diamond ring and the chorus claims: "If there is someone here who opposes, don't raise your voice. Don't let the bride listen. Don't let the moon rise, it doesn't have to". By the end the groom sing: "whether she wants it or not, she will be with me 'til she dies". The music almost imitates a funeral march. «Pienso en tu mirá» (Cap.3: Celos): "I think of your look" (or more like "I think of your eyes" (Cap.3: Jealousy). The whole song is from the POV of the husband. "I'm scared when you go out smiling on the street cause everyone can see the dimples on your face. And of the air when it blows, for lifting your hair. And of the gold that dresses you for being tied to your neck. And from the sky and the moon, cause you want to look at them. Even from the water you drink when it wets your lips". The chorus gives name to the song: "I think of your look, your look aiming a bullet to the chest". The video is really beautiful. «De aquí no sales» (Cap.4: Disputa): "You don't leave from here" (Cap.4: Dispute). My favorite one. Talks about the violence in the relationship. Rosalia said she was almost embarrassed and scared to release this song for how violent it felt. The instrumental part feels almost like we are witnessing the dispute. "You don't get out of here. It hurt me way more than is hurting you. Make no mistake with me. With the back of the hand I'll make it very clear to you", it's sang like a threat... That part always give me chills. In the video you can see her drowning in a pit filled with engine oil. «Reniego» (Cap.5: Lamento): "Denial - negation-" (Cap.5: Sorrow). "I laugh on the outside and I cry inside". This song is a Rosalia's tribute to Camaron de la isla, a famous Spanish singer, descendant of gypsies. «Preso» (Cap.6: Clausura): "Prisoner" (Cap.6: Closing). It's an interlude. Spanish actress Rossy de Palma reflects in a little monologue on a past abusive relationship she had, and how she didn't even realize she was traped, until she broke free from it. «Bagdad» (Cap.7: Liturgia): "Bagdad" (Cap.7:Liturgy). This chapter reference the downfall of the wife. Rosalia said Bagdad is about a real place, a club in Spain, but some people see also a reference to the capital of Iraq, a devastated city. Rosalia recorded this song and sent it to Justin Timberlake to ask his permission to use the melody of "Cry me a river". Apparently JT does not like to grant his songs to other singers, but loved this one. «Di mi nombre» (Cap.8: Éxtasis): "Say my name" (Cap.8:ecstasy). This chapter it's about the sexual connections between the couple and also the submission to the lover. Rosalia said the name of the songs it's a little tribute to the Destiny's child song, cause she was a big fan when she was younger. «Nana» (Cap.9: Concepción): "Lullaby" (Cap.9: Conception). Part of the song belongs to two real spanish lullabies. It's a sad song, apparently about the conception of a unwanted child in an abusive relationship. «Maldición» (Cap.10: Cordura): "Curse" (Cap.10: Sanity). "I've been told there's no way out, down this street where I'm going. They told me there's no way out... I have to find it. Even if it costs my life, Or even if I have to kill". She makes her choice and it is her life of his (literally or metaphorically). «A ningún hombre» (Cap.11: Poder): "To no man" (Chap.11: Power). It's a very empowering song, out of the violence of the rest of the album. She takes charge of her life, deciding she won't allow herself to forget what she has lived. "I consent no man to dictate my sentence. Only God can judge me. To him alone I owe obedience". "I'm going to tattoo in my skin Your initial, because it's mine. To remember forever what you did to me one day".

Really good in general- but here's some little things, in "Di mi Nombre" she's not submitting sexually to her husband, but cheating with another man. This is made reference to by how she specifically says for example "say my name when there's no one else around, when there's no one else around" or "so the things we're doing here don't leave through that door" (basically don't leave the room) I do get how that can be interpreted as "we're engaging in sexual activity which is indecent, so the stuff here shouldn't leave this room" but added to the fact that the in the novel this album was inspired by she ALSO had a lover she cheated with, I think it checks out. Maybe you were aware of this cause you wrote lover and not husband, but just in case I wanted to say something cause I feel like her cheating on another man and having a positive sexual experience vs her submitting to her abuser has you know 😭 a vastly different implication as to how dark this song is meant to be. Not that that mentality can't exist in a toxic abusive relationship, cause they really are messy and complex like that which is what makes them so devastating because sometimes abusers can have that sort of power over you and make you feel like you want something you really didn't but 😭😭 I dunno I at least feel a lot less shitty vibing to the song with that context MXBSJJS. And secondly, honestly the interpretation for Nana is fair and a nice one as well! But for the most part in terms of lyricism it matches a lot better with the implication that she suffered from a miscarriage she's mourning. The lyrics in specific that specify this are the one's that say "In the door to heaven, they sell shoes for the little angels that are barefooted". This is a little confusing without context, but it's believed that this is reference to the tradition were woman would knit little shoes for their children to put on once they're born, but since this particular child didn't manage to live, he stayed barefooted- and went to heaven, therefore being referred to as "a little angel at heavens door", because they died. I hope this was helpful! My translations may be a little rough since I'm gonna go to sleep the moment I finish writing this comment and so I'm rushing a little, but I think they work well enough in terms of getting the point across lolol. You're still free to prefer your own interpretations, but you know I thought I'd add my two cents lol, there's more lyrics that coincide with the one's I used here as examples, but once again it's a little late for me 😭😭😭 if you'd like more elaboration though I wouldn't mind doing so at a later time that is but yee👍✨✨

The songs represent chapters from a novel of 13th century called Flamenca revolving around a toxic relationship: 1. MALAMENTE Chapter 1 Augurio (Omen): It's an omen of how the relationship is going to end "Badly, very bad". She knows the relationship is bad and toxic, 2. QUE NO SALGA LA LUNA Chapter 2 Wedding. They get married and she has no voice already lol. 3. PIENSO EN TU MIRÁ Chapter 3 Celos (Jealousy): After getting married the husband starts to get jealous and possessive of her. Lyrics are sang in the husband perspective (she has no longer voice in the toxic relationship) and you can hear “I think of you sight as bullets in my chest” “I’m afraid when you leave outside, because everyone can see you smile”… 4. DE AQUI NO SALES Chapter 4 Disputa (Dispute): Also sang by the husband perspective (not hers). He threatens her and beats her up. This song is the most aggressive and the claps represents him beaten her up. “you who provoke me, you won’t be leaving here…with the back of the hand I’ll make it very clear”. 5. RENIEGO Chapter 5 Lamento (Sorrows) is her crying and her sorrows of being lonely and mistreated. 6. PRESO - Chapter 6 Clausura “captive - closure” the feeling of being in hell (beatings, etc., not literal hell). Captive in the relationship, not in literal prison. The voice is Rossy de Palma in a movie where she was a vicitm of domestic violence. 7. BAGADAD Chapter 7 Liturgia (Liturgy): This song is sample by Cry me a river of Justin Timberlake. Bagdad was a nightclub in Barcelona and the song is about loneliness and religious references to God, fallen angel, praying for change from the hell she is now (relationship). In the video she cries herself until she drowns, like crying a river haha and she is dressed as britney spears. 8. DI MI NOMBRE Chapter 8 Éxtasis (Ecstasy): She changes, her attitude is happier because she has met a lover and she feels more powerful sexually. She feels joy. 9. NANA Chapter 9 Conception; where she gets pregnant. Nana means lullaby in spanish. 10. MALDICIÓN Chapter 10 Cordura (Curse - Sanity) where she wakes up (empowers herself) and fights her husband ending with her killing him, “a river of blood”. Also uses TKN sounds for the moment of the killing. 11. and finally TO ANY MAN Chapter 11 Power - where she promises that any man will dictate her sentence, like an empowerment anthem of victims of domestic violence. THEN there is also the video of “JURO QUE” a single. It is supposed to be her lover going to prison for her. After she killed her husband, her lover decided to take the blame to save her. Therefore, as she explains in the song, she had no time to “kiss him goodbye and she will go to prison for him”. The changes of perspectives also indicates when she has voice and when she doesn't in the relationship. Techniclly Motomami is the first album she sangs from HER personal experience and personal voice. The other albums are always from different voices, she defines herself as a conduct of stories.

There are so many theories about the song Bagdad, one that I love is about sampling cry me a river and she dressing with red latex simulating Britney Spears and in the video she LITERALLY cries a river being drown on her own tears in a bathroom. This is the only song where she wears a bling wig, supposed this even though she is sampling JT is a bit of a shade to JT and paying tribute to the sorrow and breakdown to Britney, being reborn after that awful relationship. You definitely should react to the video!

There was also a theory that a song Rosalía released later called "Juro que" (I swear that) was about that other person in Flamenca's life blaming himself for killing the husband and going to jail for it. I don't know if that is true, but is indeed very interesting. The lyrics go like "There they take my boy priosioner, more that four hundred days, I had him hugged in the bed, when the police arrived, not even a kiss I could give him, as a goodbye, and that burns me" and then the chorus "I swear that (x4) for the time you are inside I'll wait for you (x2)". Beautiful!

React to her visual album of El Mal Querer, please! In order, though... The wife didn't say she would kill herself for him, he said that she would. The wording makes it clear. The jealosy part is of the husband , referring here to Pienso en tu Mirar. He imprisons her to keep her isolated and she flees in Aqui No Sales ( the videos would help understand a bit better, but just a tiny bit). She kills him btw, in the end,but beforehand she takes a lover . Funny thing is that she gained popularity with this one. Even among the non Spanish speaking crowds. To know this was her final university project makes it more amazing aun.

First four chapters are from the point of view of the man, he is basically possessive, jealous and an abuser and the rest is from the point of view of the woman. She ends up killing her abuser (her husband) and some believe the baby she conceived died due to the abuse because the lullaby she sings could either imply the child being born or the child dying because it references angels looking after it. The di mi nombre track (chapter 8) is believed to be the passionate encounter between her and a lover she has and the single JURO QUE that she released a year later is believed to be the lover who incriminates himself for the death of her husband in order to protect her as the lyrics and music video is about her promising that she will wait for him and that she will sell everything to get him out of there.

Not sure if someone already mentioned this but this concept album takes the themes of each chapter, hence cap 1, 2, 3, etc from a 13th century novel. Each song represents a different chapter in the novel (called Flamenca) and basically in the 8 centuries since that novel, it shows that the themes of jealousy, possession, etc have not moved forward much in the context of toxic masculinity. Rosalia studied flamenco in college and this album was part of her college thesis. Her previous album, Los Ángeles, was also a school project. She actually had to get permission from Justin Timberlake to release Bagdad as it is. To tie this all up, the songs progress in a storyline and she sometimes is singing from the point of view of the husband.

Maybe it's time to begin with visuals, 'cause they are another important part of Rosalía's creativity together with her team. In order not to repeat, we can leave those of these two albums for later, and start with some of the videos that she took between one and the other and that are songs that don't belong to either. I recommend you start with "A Palé". You will love it for sure: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6vaoaqYmayBf80

4:55 the genre of Delirio de Grandeza is called Bolero and it's Cuban. Whoever told you it's a subgenre of flamenco is a bit off😂

Great video for sure, but you could've definitely done a bit more research coming into this reaction, specially being the second time you react to her, or at least throughout because the instrumentals are not the only thing that compose the track and you're not experiencing everything if you don't get the lyrics.

Querer sounds like Kerer, so you pronounce it El mal Kerer, pleeeeease. Which means the bad love, not literally but approximately. The same applies to all the words with que/qui all sound Ke/Ki. Xx

El Mal Querer es para escucharlo bien, si no lo conocías deberías darte tiempo y ver los vídeos, solo así lo apreciarás y lo entenderás, no es un trabajo para oírlo de pasada
