I am in college for audio production and my instructors even say Ableton live is more for song writing than Pro Tools. I am like you where Pro Tools is a DAWs DAW. We start to learn Ableton at some point. Awesome you went from Gear Gods Brand to a Brand you want that makes it more liberal for what you want to do. Will continue following you here, you rock man!

Oh man, can't wait for you to keep digging, Trey - you're going to *love* Session View for creative songwriting sessions! That's the first screen you were looking at when you started up Ableton up. Arrangement View is great for building out whole/finished pieces, but Session View is where it's at for quickly collecting ideas and experimenting with different combinations of parts, etc. Anyhow, I'm really looking forward to seeing how your experience with it evolves over time. Also, super psyched for you, about the rebrand and everything! I think that's going to be a really good move in the long run, by completely opening up your creative options for the channel.

Try out Cakewalk by Bandlab. It’s a completely free, full DAW. A lot of us bedroom musicians can never justify paying for a full DAW but get limited by lite or trial versions of popular choices.

The devs are gonna shit a brick 🤣 if I made something like this, I would be thrilled to watch the process. As a random fat dude from Missouri, I am thrilled to watch this because it is hilarious and exactly relatable to anyone trying out a new daw. 🤣🤣🤣

One guy's move is another guy's leave. I've used Ableton Live for the last 10 years, and switched over to Nuendo, when version 12 came out this year, and Steinberg finally dropped the dongle-licensing. I also use Pro Tools professionally for editing audiobooks & movies. You really can't do anything midi-related with Pro Tools, though. At least not, if you're coming from Ableton. Funny how I can still yell behind the screen: "Press tab, press tab! Over here, over there!" Guess I'm still not quite over it.^^

Ha! In on the ground floor. Congrats on the channel rebrand/refocus. Never tried Ableton Live. Just got off the ProTools bandwagon and have been using Reaper for the past year or so. It also has the ability to label the MIDI piano roll. One of those features I didn't know I needed until I found it. Looking forward to your new stuff on both this channel and your main. 🤘

I really hope there are follow up videos on this one. I've been needing someone to cheat off of in Ableton for a while now. It might just be me being a novice, but getting the metronome to work for time changes, fixing the latency (easily), and getting a basic grasp on the native effects has been a challenge. I could also just be really dumb - that's very likely actually. Thanks for this one!

I'd like to see more in this series. I've been using cakewalk since it was Cakewalk the first time. Always thought about trying ableton or reaper. I'd like to see your thoughts after a month.... 6 months....

Yes, more! These are super helpful. Learning a daw haunted me for years but with youtube the way it is, I crammed a 30 minute tutorial for 2 straight days and had it rocking pretty hard. Watching everyone's trial and error obsessively turned what I thought would take months or years, into something bite sized in a few days. Thus far Ableton is a LOT easier than what I remember of Fruity Loops 20 years ago..

Ableton is great for song writing. I love it and I have used at least half dozen different DAWs. I struggled with it at first because it isn't like other DAWs and seemed at first to not be intuitive, but once I dug in, I realized that the other DAWs are trying to emulate a mixing board and really not that intuitive. I was just familiar with them. Ableton was originally built for Live performance, so it really loves gear. So many midi controllers will just work and will have scripts that run automatically.

oh just wait until you start messing with the looper/mixer (the original screen you were on). that's where the real power is. it's incredible for fast songwriting. "a live workflow is quickly writing songs" yup that's literally why it's so incredible. Pretty much you can create loops/sound bites and then drag drop it to create a song. the pro tools way/track view is the slow way. I am just starting to learn it myself (haven't paid for it just yet though). there's a lot of power and stuff i like about it. some of which you mentioned in this video, but seriously play with that screen and your workflow and life will change. i've never EVER seen a faster program for song writing than Ableton. Pro tools is better for engineers vs songwriters.

Ableton is awesome, but yeah, you gotta RTFM is you want to get the most of it. Or just watch youtube tutorials, but wary of the ones that are BS of course. I also think Trey of channel no. 1 would gong this pretty fast :P And to adress your question about the name, the DAW is Live because at first it wasn't a DAW, it was an app to quickly throw together audio loops and arrangements on the fly, to actually perform electronic music with the sequencer and to be able to record your production-performance.

ableton vs fl: ableton- Chopping, warping, pitching audio (and comping) ableton- stock effects (vocoder, glue compressor, spectral resonator, amps) ableton- live looping jam workflow (not only in session view, comping) fl- midi (ableton 2004 ass piano roll) fl- automation (ableton u cant even enter a precise value at a point in time, you can only click and drag) ableton- signal processing (m4l, .adg == ez patcher window) fl- again midi (fl patterns are so far ahead of ableton's piano roll) idek why ppl use pro tools tbh I would consider it outdated at best

also your default track is customizable, so you can make input monitoring set to default :0

also its called "activator" and not mute because it uses the same design language as both device activation and audio/midi clip activation (where if its colored its activated and if its grey its deactivated)
@SkyMasters
@SkyMasters Жыл бұрын
Monitor is off by default so you don't have any latency when recording. Monitored through your interface. If you're coming from 20 years of working in arrangement with linear views. I suggest you dig into the session views for quite some time. There's nothing like it. You build a song two-dimensionally that you can play differently every time you open it
