Sonic 1 Remastered - Walkthrough

Sonic 1 Remastered is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive by Puto. Unlike most other hacks, the officially released version 1.1 isn't a level art/palette/layout hack as much as an "additional features" hack done in ASM. One of the major additions to the game is added with the choice of using Sonic or Tails throughout the game (selecting a character is done at the title screen). There also exists a version 2 hack which was leaked without Puto's permission, although he later gave permission to upload it onto the wiki.

While no fan-made game is perfect, this was extremely fun to watch! Longtime Sonic fans like myself can easily pick up on the creative liberties that were made (e.g. Sonic 3 sprites and shields, the peel-out and jump animations from Sonic CD, custom-made soundtrack including bits from Sonic 2 and 3, etc.) My only nitpick is how ridiculously easy the boss battles are (but I’d like to imagine that this was intentional for the sake of the walkthrough). Outside of that, job well done by the creators of this hack!

Adding Sonic 3's elemental shields is like porting Sonic 2's title cards, due to it, you're gonna have to find which variables and constants are correct for the subroutine, also finding which routines are ACTUALLY equivalent from what it shows on the subroutine, also porting music may be hard, but there are atleast "Music Porting" programs like SMPS Converter and Music Pointer Fixer, etc. Porting things from another games may be hard, but if you know ASM68K/AS assembly, that will be easy.

Painto I am surprised that people are saying the game is incompatible with some emulators, considering that you only have to hold A when pressing start at the Sega screen to get it to work. Also, when I input the debug mode cheat, it plays the ring sound effect meaning that it is activated, but it never seems to activate in-game.

I'm loving the Master System tunes that have been ported over (there's seriously not enough love for what Yuzo Koshiro did on the 8-bit versions)... and I had to grin when Bright Eyes played over the credits. There's an interesting amount of hate for remasters. "You didn't improve this" and "I don't like what you did there" seem to be commonplace. Remember that this is running within the confines of a Mega Drive. Additionally, Streets of Rage Remake - a very highly rated title on the PC - takes the original graphics and adds some extra effects on top, but not enough to make the game different. I suppose the difference here is that a remaster wouldn't change the basic levels. You do get extra moves, a ton of reworked music and probably more Sonic 3 than people would like, so perhaps it's more Sonic 1 Enhanced than Sonic 1 Remastered.

+Horrifyingly Hillarious Because the authors of these hacks don't test them on real hardware and if a real Genesis has trouble playing the game most likely emulators will struggle aswell. Not blaming the authors completely though as having the money and funds to test their builds on real hardware can prove to be very difficult.

EDIT: Wait, Marble Zone Act 2 seems to have got it correctly...! EDITEDIT: okay, so... the front end of this is NOTHING like Sonic 1, but then the back half gets it?!? very interesting.
