Dust Hill Zone was the name given to a desert level intended to be featured in Sonic 2, but was cut out of the game due to time constraints during the development of the game. It was referred to in an early concept sketch as "Desert Zone". A wild west style desert is rarely seen in the Sonic series. Though the name "Dust Hill Zone" does feature in the beta, it is actually an earlier version of the Mystic Cave Zone.

I didn’t realize the buttons were meant to raise the height of the sand! I find that concept really cool since it actually changes the level. I felt like a lot more could have been done to fill spaces in the ice sections. But what do I know? I was -1 when this came out, so it’s the best they could do at the time :)

I think it was this version of Dust Hill as well, first time I remember playing it in 2013 and I was just completely lost. Some of it lack of familiarity I'm sure but man it felt so much more complex than anything I remember from Sonic 2's final edition.

Dessert dazzle which was cancelled for sonic cd was the remake of this. And then mirage saloon was litteraly the same thing as dessert dazzle but only because of christan whitehead. He made the music different and the name different.

Actually, it was the Hidden Palace theme altogether. If you look at prototypes, Hidden Palace had this stage's theme. The reason why it plays Track 10 in the final game is because of incorrect ID assignment.

To clarify things once and for all, people Dust Hill is not a beta name for Mystic Cave neither is named Sand Shower, Mystic Cave being called Dust Hill was merely a mistake did in the level select as one of the producers confirmed that the desert stage was indeed gonna be called Dust Hill and as for Sand Shower, that was going to be a different desert stage just like how there would have been two Genocide City stages. One last fact, I don't think that Oil Ocean's theme was going to be played in any of the two stages, especially not in Dust Hill which was supposed to be a western-themed desert not egyptian.

DUST HILL ZONE Dust Hill Zone is the name of a scrapped level intended to be featured in the Sega Mega Drive version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Development of this stage was handled primarily by Brenda Ross of Sega Technical Institute, and is themed on a desert, similar to those found in Southwest America, complete with cacti and sand. Dust Hill Zone's origins date back to early stages of Sonic 2 when time travel was still a planned feature for the game, where it existed as part of a "ruined present" timeline[1]. Devised by Hirokazu Yasuhara, the "planner" of the game, Dust Hill existed at this point by name only, being analogous to present and past versions of a stage, Green Hill Zone (Emerald Hill) and Hill Top Zone, respectively[1]. The zone survived the time travel concept and at some point became a desert level. Brenda Ross was responsible for the levels' artwork, where it was known internally as "?? Zone" (Sabaku Zone, literally "Desert Zone")[2] and similar phrases such as "Desert"[3][4], "Desert level" and "Desert Zone"[5][6]. It is claimed by Brenda Ross that the level's layout was completed before work began on Wood Zone, Ross' second level which was also ultimately scrapped[7]. Ross also claimed in an interview that the level would have above ground and below ground sections[7]. Alongside Ross, art director Tim Skelly has suggested that most of the graphic tiles would have been reused (with different colors) in a winter level[7][6]. Shortly after Sonic 2's announcement, Sega distributed three "screenshots" of the game, constructed out of both completed Sonic 2 assets and holdovers from the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Alongside what would become Emerald Hill Zone and Hidden Palace Zone, a desert stage was pictured. While using Brenda Ross' artwork for the stage, the HUD positioning is incorrect, Sonic is off-centre (due to his speed) and some graphics (such as the clouds) are borrowed from the original game. The level was not named, and may have never been known by the US artists, however when pressed, Hirokazu Yasuhara identified the level as Dust Hill Zone[8]. The crocodile badnik, Gator as brought into the game, and in older builds was a placeable debug object in Hidden Palace Zone. Its artwork does not exist in the final game. Much like the Buzzers in this image however, it cannot be confirmed whether it was indended to be seen in Dust Hill, as Brenda Ross did not work on the objects and enemies. Prototype versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 list a level called "Dust Hill Zone". When accessed in the "Simon Wai" prototype, the player is taken to an unfinished Mystic Cave Zone. This prototype and some later builds were sent to the gaming press, and as a result, Mystic Cave Zone was often referred to as "Dust Hill Zone"[9][10]. It is not known whether this was an overlooked error, the result of levels being re-arranged, or the name being recycled for Mystic Cave for a short period. As many levels were scrapped in Sonic 2 at various stages of development, it cannot be confirmed or denied that the two stages were linked in any way. Other possible remnants of Dust Hill include an empty level slot, accessed in this prototype by entering the Game Genie code AA7A-AGGY and choosing Green Hill Zone Act 1 in the stage select. Like Genocide City Zone, Death Egg Zone, and the second Act of Wood Zone, the stage is entirely empty, with the default background music being the tune used in Oil Ocean Zone in the final game. These leftovers can also be accessed in the final game by entering the Game Genie Code ACLA-AGD8 (AB6X-AGBR in Knuckles in Sonic 2), and pressing start on "Sound Test" (or in Knuckles in Sonic 2, the Special Stage). This version of the stage is also comparable to the Genocide City Zone, as they both use broken Emerald Hill Zone tiles, have little collision data, and no objects, making the stages impossible to finish by any means. In both cases there is no definitive proof that the slot was intended for Dust Hill, but with most other levels from the era being accounted for and Dust Hill being reportedly complete on paper, the stage was a likely candidate for the slot. Nos meados dos anos 2001 ...se olhar no Google. Tem umas entrevistas com uma designer americana chamada BRENDA ROSS. Ela e mais uns 2 americanos estavam no projeto de desenvolvimento do Sonic 2. Inclusive esse cenário Dust Hill foi criado por ela também, ela queria criar um cenário desértico e com neve. Onde algum momento do jogo onde o Sonic passasse a palheta de cores mudava e virava tudo neve. Essa imagem da DustHill ela disse que usaram em um comercial como meio de Marketing, tanto que não tava pronto ainda. Pode observar que o Sonic não eta centralizado na tela e a contagem do anel quando tem menos que 10 só possui uma casa de numeros, já na foto possui duas(08). Fora essa fase ela estava criando outra e outro Americano envolvido no projeto tal de Craig algo assim estava fazendo a Hidden Palace(não aquela que tem no Sonic&Knuckles). Mas a Brenda Ross disse na entrevista que os Japones queriam apressar o lançamento do Sonic 2, então tiveram que descartar bastante coisas do projeto. É claro que grande parte infelizmente foi da parte dos desenvolvedores Americanos (óbvio que seria). Então esse foi um dos grandes motivos que além da Dust Hill, Wood Zone, Hidden Palace não foram concluídas. Foram terminadas por Roms com base nas imagens desenhadas pelo produtores verdadeiros, tanto que os chefes destas fases são repetidos. Ainda existe mais uma fase na Rom chamada Genocity City, mas nas entrevistas com a Ross ela desconhece essa fase, não sabe se outra pessoa haviam iniciado essse estágio.

Explainations: This zone is probably supposed to be called Sand Shower, with Dust Hill being Mystic Cave's old name. The winter section was also not supposed to be part of Sand Shower itself; instead, it was meant to be it's own zone using assets from Sand Shower, similarly to Green/Emerald Hill and Hill Top.

Granted, I do believe that Dust Hill was supposed to be Mystic Cave. Maybe they changed up the graphics down the line before they changed the name because the old one lost any context.

It appears on the world map concept art separately from Sand Shower. The map art actually corresponds with the in-game zone slots, and Sand Shower's slot (03) has a blank stage that plays Oil Ocean's original theme, further proving that Dust Hill and Sand Shower were not the same (and also that its theme was not Mystic Cave 2P VS or Aquatic Ruin). Genocide City Zone was in two of the world map pictures and it also recieved concept art of its own, where it was named 'Cyber City' (probably the name Sega would more likely have went with if not a new name entirely).
