I used to short out adjacent pins on the 68000 to screw up the graphics and similarly on the z80 to mess up the sound. Had to run the genesis from a current limited power supply to avoid blowing up the chips. Happy days! NB: i guess your emulator is set to automatically restart in the event of a crash?

Not exactly. For the older Sonic games, especially 3, when the game is too corrupted it cuts to the SEGA in the beginning and starts all over. The corruptions remain intact.
