Ok, so for those of you who aren't in the know, the og soundtrack of Sonic 3 was made during a partnership with various music artists like Michael Jackson, and as such, alot of stages featured background music that sounded like their songs, if not matching it note for note. This unfortunately makes for a legal nightmare when you try to reuse it for a new product years later...

@@yaboipktendo actually it was based on the original demo tapes, meaning closer to how it was composed than prototype or midi. basically the people that composed didn't control how it was converted. the conversions were done by specific people at sega, who would adapt the songs for use in games since not all composers had FM synth skill.

SEGA has never been allowed to reuse the tracks in re-releases due to concerns of Jackson's label or estate, and it's long been said that he didn't want to be associated with the games because he wasn't satisfied with the quality of the tracks. It bothers me that people are thinking the ones used in origins are the prototype tracks themselves, but they’re actually remixes or rearrangements or something which (in my opinion) is worse than the prototype ones. I’m judging them by their composition, not vibe or theme, but yeah Hard Times Ice Cap is iconic and best for Act 1.

The new tracks sound unfinished and stand out from the other tracks that did stay. Listen to how Angel Island or Hydrocity is arranged and then listen to these. They really do sound unfinished or by an entirely different person. It's like a metal album with a single country song. (or Sonic CD's past music against the US present and futures, pop vs rock. They're not as bad but the JP soundtracks actually go with each other) I wish at the very least they fit in with the rest of the tracks better, or got someone other than the Crush40 guy to do them on "actual hardware".

It sounds unfinished because they literally are unfinished. They're based off an early prototype of the game but Hidden Palace discovered a later prototype that had more complete versions of these prototype songs. SEGA wasn't aware of their own game builds.

No, what legit bothers me about this is that the beta version, the one we found out about in a Sonic 3 beta build recently, sounds better than this version?? It only bothers me so much because the only problem I have is what the equivalent problem would be to "mixing" the track. It sounds so muddy and muted compared to the rest of the OST, and you're gonna FEEL that.

Yeah, but there were perfectly serviceable tracks _already there_ in the 11/03/93 prototype, and _people actually liked them_ when first heard on the Hidden Palace stream. Why Sega couldn't just *use those* instead of shitting up the compositions to the level of the 1997 S&KC garbage that *people hated for decades* is absolutely beyond me.

Honestly Ice Cap and Launch Base Zone's new themes kinda grew on me after a while. I definitely still prefer the original, don't get me wrong, but the new songs are pretty solid replacements since they couldn't use Jackson's. Carnival Night Zone is.. a different story though.

I look at this situation like the re-release of Punch-Out! on NES replacing Mike Tyson with Mr. Dream. Sure the original is superior, but is it really worth it to keep it that way? Can't say I blame Sega for not wanting to deal with the legality of the matter for just a few music tracks.
