Batman Beyond totally makes sense that people have a strong attachment to it. It has a unified and distinct aesthetic. On Gambit: some people love an enigma, not so much for mystery, but because it makes them more of a blank slate of potential. When you just stay at the 'potential' stage, it makes the character a lot harder to dislodge from your mind. The flash-bulb memory of aesthetics combined with very little additional information to change that perception make for a very long-burning candle. It's a double-edged sword, though, because it's also why there's never going to be a widely praised Gambit-centric narrative. It may not draw revulsion, but any commitment to drag the character out of that grey space and into the spotlight with development is probably going to be met with a lot of "meh, it isn't really what I want", even if the person couldn't follow up with a description of how they'd do better.
@marvelanddcretrospective3 жыл бұрын
I'd say the reason why Gambit is a fan favorite is because of his powers (they are freakin cool) and because he is a likable character, he's got the charisma and wisecracks and he can be serious when he needs to be; his chemistry with Rogue is also a big part of his popularity because the two share plenty of great moments; and although he has never really been a focus character whenever he has shown up he has usually brought energy and life to whatever story he has been a part of and he has never really had a sucky moment; all of his appearances usually involve him being badass.
@PatrickZysk3 жыл бұрын
I think part of what Brett is missing about Batman Beyond (and quite a few cartoons) is that that show was on reruns for _years_ . I remember that it was on network TV Saturday mornings alongside Justice League Unlimited reruns. Cartoons have a much longer tail than a lot of other tv, so I think Alex's estimation of 25 year olds is probably closer than you think. The people who want a Batman Beyond movie are probably the youngest TV audience who only remember the cool parts of reruns from when they were like 10.

oh i can answer why waluigi is popular. pretty sure it started with people jokingly saying he was their favorite after recognizing that nintendo weirdly never uses him or characterizes him at all other than “guy standing next to wario” and then other people thought it was funny so they joined in. and as with all jokes sustained over a long period of time, that devotion eventually became genuine in a lot of people. which, for me is still really funny, because despite the sudden popularity nintendo still like REFUSES to acknowledge that he even exists lmao

Sure, Jean Grey and Cyclops a nd Magneto are more developed characters for people to be interested in but Gambit just oozes cool: trench coat, cajun accent, exploding playing cards, a cool staff, actually interestingly implemented powers, a bit of a scoundrel with a heart of gold personality. Gambit is a cool character and that's enough to attract people.

So the thing about characters being popular despite how much they actually do in their mediums tends to just be people latching on to what they feel is a cool concept and their minds just filling in the blanks. So so many people just saw Gambit with his power/attitude and then just ran with it.

Also, Terry did A LOT in his time on the show, so it makes sense why he's so beloved as a character! Gambit is really all about his one-liner(s) and the fact that he uses cards as a weapon. That's it. Edit: As I say with any game involving mechanics most have trouble with, (i.e. motion controls, soulsborn, etc) it's RARELY the game, MOST OFTEN the player.

X-Men: The Animated Series doesn't have the pedestal that Batman: The Animated Series has been put on, but aside from the movies, that cartoon is still the defining example of X-Men among casual fans, ESPECIALLY for Gambit. No other X-Men cartoon series (or, to be quite frank, post-1990 comic) has had even 1/10th the impact the 90's show has. Morph was killed in Episode 2 and was revived BECAUSE he was so popular with fans. As for Batman Beyond, Brett seems to be forgetting that the show had reruns on both Cartoon Network and Toon Disney well into the early 00's, has had multiple DVD/Blu-ray sets, and was recently put on HBO Max. Believe it or not, kids don't exclusively watch cartoons made within the last 2-3 years. They've tried to incorporate Terry into the comics multiple times, but it usually is super terrible, most notably Future's End. Also, I will pass on The Dark Knight Returns live-action movie. Frank Miller as a whole needs to be kicked to the curb. I don't want to see any of his works adapted any more than they already have. BvS already more or less adapted it anyway and the animated version was relatively faithful. That's enough. Fuck Frank Miller. Get him and his Holy-Terror-creating-ass outta here for the fuck ever.

I’m 24, I was born in 1997, legit two years before Batman beyond came out. (Almost exactly according to google, I’m a month off) and I LOVED that show. I loved Batman beyond. And yes I know now that those were all reruns by the time I would be, like, coming back from school to watch them, but that didn’t matter to me. In that same vain I LOVED the X-Men cartoons too. And Gambit was very charming, I think his real name is Remmy (damn well spelled completely wrong probably). He was Cajun, he had a deck of cards, and he had a thing with Rouge who was this very very cool Southern Belle. Then when I was a teenager and able to look up comics and read stories about these characters, one hundred percent all that fandom energy just got more intense. QOTD: Capitan Falcon Going solely off the F-Zero games, Falcon doesn’t have much going for him. For the majority of the game he’s in his car, and for the few times he is outside it, like in F-Zero GX, there isn’t much about him that stands out. On top this, most people who love Falcon haven’t even played an F-Zero game, hence why we haven’t seen one in decades. The reason he is so loved now is explicitly Smash Bros and the persona given to him in that series. Sakurai’s interpretation of Falcon is the new normal, and people want to see Falcon more because of that interpretation rather than who he is in F-Zero. Been seeing people clamoring for a Falcon beat-em-up or another F-Zero, which is fine, but the reason you want it is because of the Smash Falcon, not F-Zero Falcon.

Was Alex in the middle of saying that he took a class on Harry Potter in college, and Brett just never revisits that? What would that even be about?

Possibly a literature course, or maybe a film course? According to Google there’s a fair few college and university courses on Harry Potter, across a range of disciplines.

In the end card song, what episode is Alex's quote about his eyeballs touching together come from?

It is from The Sonic Adventure DX LP, in the early few episodes.
