Actually Wiiviewer, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed was in development first, and when the team saw the reveal of MK7, they got angry because of how similar it was to their idea. So, MK7 actually borrows from All-Stars Racing Transformed, technically speaking. At the end of the day, I still prefer the airplane and boat transformations vs. glider and under-water propeller transformations. If anything, this is closer to Diddy Kong Racing than Mario Kart 7.

just as an FYI.... the game supports FIVE player local multiplayer (4 wii remotes split screen and the fifth racer uses the gamepad controller)....

I can help you with that Eric. DKR introduced the Plane and Boating mechanics. While the vehicle didn't transform into other types, the gameplay is very similar to DKR. But Transformed also uses some elements from the Mario Kart series as well. The game is more skill based then most Kart Racers these days. Though drifting is still meh, overall this game is fantastic though and one of the best games for Wii U. Later man =)

@wiiviewr: I never really got, why people wondered about Sonic racing in a car. Of course he could outrun the other cars, but that's the point of why he uses one. In other words: Would you like to be in a competition with someone, who is clearly overpowered? E.g. Would you like to play counterstrike against someone with an aimbot?

This is currently one of 2 Wii U games on my radar. I plan on getting this and Lego City Undercover when my funds look good. I applaud Sega for the effort they put in differentiating this port and will gladly show my support for third parties on the Wii U by purchasing this. For those of you on the fence, try the demo. May not be Mario Kart quality but it's definitely not a rip off and can easily warrant a place in your collection along with Mario Kart U when it comes out. :)

I was just happy to be able to play as Vyse from Skies of Arcadia. As well as racing on Blue Rouge Island it was so awesome how the Armada ships would attack the island and the last lap would turn into nothing but a joy air ride.

I got this on Steam with the Sonic Humble Bundle, and it surprised me with how much fun it was! When the original came out I was still a Nintendo-obsessed kid (rather than a Nintendo-obsessed young adult), and I shrugged it off as a cheap Mario Kart clone. However, after playing this game on Steam, I was pleasantly surprised to find a truly great racer, possibly one of my favourites out there. Highly recommended!

I always put a focus on non-online gaming since most of the games I play that is the main game, and the online is an additional feature. I don't play it for the online play. I only test it for if there are frame rate issues (which there isn't). I mentioned there is a normal racing, race mode without item blocks, and battle. That's it. No one was ever on the non-item block racing FYI.

FYI, this game does not have just two control options. You can play with the wiimote, gamepad, pro controller, and even the classic controller pro.

The only thing I would say that MarioKart still has above all other kart racers is how well it handles/controls. The level of polish in MarioKart, I feel, is one reason why people always go back to it. As for this game, it does beat Mariokart in every other area since it's more varied, has more depth and takes kart racing to the next level.

If you still feel the boat sections are the slowest, keep in mind that the boat sections also offer the most opportunities to do stunt boosts so in a way, 3 three sections have their benefits. Cars - easiest to control, Boats - most boost opportunities, Planes - fastest.

Before DKR on the N64, Mario Kart 64 and Super Mario Kart had only one vehicle. DKR added different vehicles,the hovercraft and plane, and added power-ups that could be upgraded (I'm surprised this hasn't been used). So this game borrowed that from DKR. As you said, the transformation of vehicles came from Mario Kart 7.

Not a problem. Not everyone has the Wii U pro controller yet so it would obviously be impossible to know which games can use the controller without owning it.

The argument is formed because while MK7 had you transform during the race, the vehicles in Transformed are similar to DKR, whereas in MK7 you were gliding and driving underwater, and in Transformed you're actually a plane and boat, like in DKR. So it's like a mah-up of both. So yeah....WHO WANTS PANCAKES?!

It has the same theme as Mario Kart, except that Sega used different characters from different franchises, unlike Mario Kart which focused on Mario characters, they are two very different games though, now if only Sega still have their own console, this would've heated up the war

in sega's defence, they did announce this game before Mario Kart 7, so they had the idea first, but Mario Kart 7 released way before sonic and all-stars:P still a great game!

Although, MK7 had the hang glider in which you kinda glided (or fell with style) and DKR and SAS has planes in which you actually fly. MK7 had underwater sections, and DKR and SAS had boats (I consider the hovercrafts boats, since it works like the boat in SAS from what I've seen.) I guess he's saying the vechicle ideas were from DKR and that the changing was from MK7. Ok, long paragraph done, let's go to ARRRbys! Oops, wait. Wrong video...

I have this game (only one of three I own for Wii U) & think its great. The frame rate/graphics might not be quite there but the gameplay is fun & the extras (mini games, characters, game pad only play) are neat. Great hold me over or even replacement for Mario Kart Wii U.

From the looks of it the boat gameplay seems reminiscent of Hydro Thunder and I love that game so maybe I would like this. I also like Mario Kart and flying planes in games so I think I would like those aspects as well.

I have heard that argument before and I don't get it. What part of DKR did they borrow from? The different vehicles? That was nothing new. Mario Kart 7 was the one who had them changing in the middle of the race.

I hate that "why does Sonic need a car/hoverboard he can outrun all the other racers easily" thing. That's exactly why he needs a car. If he was running while everyone else had cars, he would win every single time no matter what. This way he actually has competition. Also why would you want that in a game? The best character would always be Sonic and everyone would always be Sonic and it would be boring as shit.

It sounds like you are good at drifting and you should be proud of that. When I went online for multiplayer, there was one race where I got far ahead and no one ever caught up to me once because I knew how to drift. Also, there is no blue shell, lightning bolt, octopus ink, and red turtle shells to attack you all at once 100 feet before the finish line to prevent you from finishing first and instead finish in 8th. That is luck on MKWii. So I still believe this game takes skill.

I think the Sonic Racing games are better than Mario Kart, for the basic reasoning is it takes a heck of a lot more skill to go from the back to the front. The blue shell is the most OP thing in the game and it's just an annoyance to possibly prevent people who are good at the game from winning.

I disagree actually sonic and all-star racing transformed was in development before mario kart 7, and mario kart 7 was eventually rushed out so it can make the holiday sells. So it didn't barrow from mario kart 7 at all. I disagree about it taking skill and not luck. When I first started the game (had it since launch but didn't open it until a month later) I was beating some people ranked much higher than me without even knowing all the track layouts. I wish I could say it was because I was just that damn good, but I was lucky. And single player missions are very cheap so skill isn't all it takes. I think the mixture of needing luck and skill is what makes kart racers fun and why I avoid games like Gran Turismo.

Actually, Wiiviewr, it borrowed heavily from Diddy Kong Racing and then it borrowed some elements from Mario Kart 7. Nice try though. Unilke Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7, it actually takes skill and not luck to win. I enjoy the new concept with most tracks changing each lap. It made no lap the same and required you to do well on all three laps rather than one good lap.
