Actually, I think Alex Kidd was the Sega mascot before Sonic, so you can see why they put him in.

I just borrowed a copy of this from the local library and I LOVE it. Will definitely buy a copy now. I like it a lot more than Mario Kart Wii. Great review, love the father/son dynamic. :)

The odd thing is the 360/PS3 version struggle to keep their 30 frames per second going. They regularly dip well below. I can say for sure that the tracks and characters are basically identical aside from the resolution, which means Sega was probably just lazy I also bought the PC version since it's $15 today on special sale. The PC version (unless I'm just not seeing something) appears to NOT play online. I found this strange. How was the split screen play on the Wii? Too frame-y? Just right?

The lilwiiviewer actually got you pretty good in the analogy of "sonic is to sega as Mario is to Nintendo" One may be more popular relatively than the other, but both are the leading mascots of the respective companies :D As to the review, it's nice seeing Sega make a fun, well-controlled game. Unfortunately, it seems Sega performs best when they are the least creative. If only a creative Sega game featured good controls, a solid camera, and a fun concept. Still waiting....

All of the recent Sonic games (in terms of sales) have been successful. But I do see your point, SEGA really need to work harder on quality, but All Stars Racing is a very big step in the right direction, imo. I enjoyed it as much as Mario Kart Wii, which was a bit of a surprise for me. Here's hoping that SEGA commission Sumo Digital to develop more Sonic games in the future, because so far, it seems like they know how to develop a spinoff game better then SEGA themselves.

@Stoneth (cont.) You're also right about not counting portable titles like Advance 1 or Rush, as that is going in the Sonic 4 direction. Rush is by no means a continuation of the original gameplay but still fun, whereas Advance 1 has that balance between speed and platforming common in the Genesis games. That does get lost in Advance 2, you have to admit.

You know, I'd kind of figured that this was kind of a more conventional Sega arcade-style racing game, you know, get in first, don't lag behind the timer, Daytona USA, Outrun, something vaguely along those lines, just with mascots, but the more you talked about the game, the more obviously this is Sega Mario Kart. The good news is that Mario Kart eventually runs out of new tracks, Sega makes fun arcade-style games, and this looks like fun, so everybody say hello to Mario Kart Wii 2!

@L4dude5 In a very early build, you actually could use Sonic on foot (as well as Eggman with an Eggpod that had legs, Tails in a biplane, and a Golden Axe character on a Chickenleg creature). However, drifting and character sizes made the game unfun, so they put everyone in cars, bikes, and modified flyers.

There is one thing Lil' Wiiviewer forgot when he compard the game to Mario Kart Wii; it doesn't punish you for winning. When your in the lead in Mario Kart (all of 'em) it's like your suddenly 6 times you size and get hit by EVERYTHING with all the stars, Bullet Bills and Blue Shells. SASASR however actually requires SKILL not use of items, and I adored that.

billy hatcher and the giant egg was super fun for me. my first system was a gamecube, and i didnt know any good games. my mom knew that i liked sonic adventure 2 battle and on the case of billy hatcher it said made by the creators of sonic. when i unwrapped it for my birthday i thought it looked stupid, but as soon as i popped it in the gamecube, I really started to like it.

Still, Sonic Unleashed did sell a lot of copies. If I recall correctly, it sold over 4 million copies on all systems combined. I played a demo of the 360 and PS3 versions of the game,but I own the PS2 version. And apparently the 360 and PS3 versions got the most negative criticism. Which I have to say is surprising considering that the next-gen version of the game is the real SU. They had to rip out many stages and features for the Wii and PS2 version. Regardless, I think SU 360 is pretty sweet.

You know, Mario isn't the only thing keeping Nintendo alive. They have Star Fox, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, DK, and Yoshi. They have so many characters that keep them alive.

This game really is fun. My dislikes would be the distracting Monkey Ball stages and the lack of stages in battle modes. Also, with Billy Hatcher, I remember playing the multiplayer at my friends house years and years ago, it was SO fun! I might not find it as good today but I would do ANYTHING for that game! Also, the other character I knew beforehand was B.D Joe. Remember Crazy Taxi? I played the arcade version of it. IT ROCKS! SEGA used to be cool, why did they mess Sonic up? :(

Just FYI, they weren't quite scraping the bottom of the barrel, rather they didn't have many iconic characters. Sega had a lot of minor classics that went unnoticed because of their general lack of notable characters in their classics, for instance Kid Chameleon, Super Hang-On, Comix Zone, Shining Force, and many more. All were VERY good games, but their main character was nothing you can easily remember. That said, I'd never heard of half the franchises in this game either myself.
