Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Vs Sonic and All Star Transformed (Xbox 360/PS3)

Just for fun, here's a comparison between Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing on the Xbox 360 versus its sequel Sonic and All Star Transformed on the PS3. I've chosen the Classic cup from Transformed, which uses 4 of the tracks from the first game (although I had to substitute one of them in the video because I don't own the Egg Hangar DLC for the 1st game)
I think the Xbox version of the original has just got the edge graphically between the two, it seems a bit sharper and clearer, particularly on the Jet Set Radio track. Also, I noticed there are some transparency effects on the track on Carnival Tour in the 360 version that aren't in Transformed on the PS3 (I just checked out an Xbox 360 video of Transformed. They're not in that version either). On the whole though I prefer Transformed overall, the gameplay feels more polished to me. The handling feels tighter, the power-ups are better and I think they used a far better range of Sega's IPs for this one, with the inclusion of characters and tracks based on Shinobi, Golden Axe, Outrun, Daytona USA, Afterburner, Panzer Dragoon, Space Harrier and Burning Rangers (just a shame they didn't include any of the Sonic R music in the 2nd game - I bloody love those cheesy dance tracks). A lot of the characters in the first game seemed like an odd selection of Sega C-listers (to me anyway) so I'm glad they rectified it in Transformed (although I would have preferred a few less Sonic characters and the return of Opa Opa, the Bonaza Bros and the Zombie couple. And the omission of any Streets of Rage characters is criminal. and no Daytona USA themed course? 777 speedway was just crying out to be used in this game somehow).
The transformed mechanic really does add more to the gameplay as well and I wonder if that is what maybe makes the sequel look a bit rougher around the edges graphically, with all the extra processing power needed for the water effects etc.
Oh yeah, and thank God they got rid of that irritating as fuck announcer/commentator guy from the first game in Transformed.

I played the demo of transformed and Racing and honestly I enjoyed Racing more, plus it had Ryo Hazuki in its roster so that was the added bonus hat clinched the deal for me. However I'll get Transformed in the future, I think there's a lot of fun to be had there as well.

I would honestly recommend the original over Transformed. Unlocking everything in Transformed is a major pain in the ass. You’ll have to beat every single race on S class, which feels near impossible. Avoid Transformed unless you can use somebody else’s save on your platform of choice. In the original you can unlock everything by simply playing the game.

It's true, unlocking everything in Transformed is a major pain in the arse, but it's worth it though for AGES. As a big Daytona USA and After Burner fan, it really is the ultimate fan service vehicle for me. I can't pretend my PS3 pad didn't end up embedded in the TV screen a few times, but I just grit my teeth and grinded through, praying each race on the final couple of expert tracks I'd get an All Star power up I could pop open in the final leg of the last lap. Luckily when I upgraded to the PC version I was able to use some else's save... I generally prefer Transformed though, it's got a better selection of characters and tracks based on old school Sega IPs in my opinion and I think the music, power ups and handling are generally better.

I used somebody else’s save on PS3, by using a tool to resign the save to my account data. To be honest I didn’t really like the transformation gimmick in Transformed. The original also has actually unique all stars and a better announcer. Transformed is also more glitchy. The game deleted my save once. Transformed however indeed does have a better selection of characters and tracks. It also feels faster.

I prefer the original sega all stars racing over transformed because, the announcer is better, its less glitchy than transformed, the all stars are way cooler and more useful, the driving engine feels more complete, the missions are better, the music is better (even though almost all of it is taken from other sega games), the roster makes more sense (though banjo and kazoie and the avatar are in the 360 version and the mii is in the wii version and mario was gonna also be in the wii version and ratchet and clank were rumoured to be in the ps3 version at-one-point...) Ok so the roster in the original all stars racing is a bit wack too, but everything else about it is so much better than transformed in every conceivable way. That it doesn’t even matter in my opinion.😁👍

I haven't played much of Sonic and Sega All-Stars racing as much as transformed (because it was no longer on mobile and now's the version I first played when I had an iPod and the copy for Xbox 360 from my therapy clinic got scratched up) but what I've seen the first game looks more preferable

Love them both but this is why I Personally the sequel: Now yes the All Stars and character roster may be better in the original and there is the commentator but i love additions such as character mods in transformed as you can choose whats right for you with that character and the task of maxing out all the characters, i also love the going in sea and air as it adds a new dynamic and skill to racing, i also find transformed in general to be more competitive and challenging to win races and in the original find myself winning easily a lot of the time even on expert. And finally i have more fun with the tracks in Transformed, i feel like they're harder and are more thought out and there are different elements especially woth the different vehicle types. Anddd that ls it... Im sure a lot of people will disagree with me but thats just my personal opinion

Which one do you think would be better for kids who are just picking up racing games? I've heard that Transformed had much better and more unique levels, but the original seems to have better controls and more flashed out race engine, not to forger a greater plethora of characters.

Good question. I don't think you can really go too far wrong with either. I (personally) don't think the original's got better controls, I prefer Transformed's handling, levels and characters (if you grew up with the Megadrive like I did, they're way more significant). The original is great too though, just not as great as Transformed in my eyes. Having said that though, I'm pretty sure you could pick both of these up and still have change from £10 these days.

Thanks for a fast reply! Unfortunately, in my specific circumstances I can only chose one of them. You're a person who has played both of them and with whom I can converse, unlike 10 year old forums, so sorry if I end up asking too many questions. I've read that unlocking things in Transformed can be much more annoying than in the original, especially if aiming for everything. Is that true? Also, I haven't watched the entire video, but, in the chunk that I did watch, in Transformed you and your opponents seemed to look like normal cars, whereas in original they looked like they should. What's up with that? I just don't want the kids to get bored after playing it for 10 hours (in total, that is), so for now I'm stuck doing research.

@@MavikBow Yeah, unlocking everything in Transformed does turn into a bit of a ballache by the end, it gets quite tough. There's a lot of wacky vehicles in Transformed, I'm specifically playing as the Hornet from Daytona USA, which is why it looks like a regular car. @@AkmalAlif69 I wouldn't say either is especially grindy, but you definitely have to put time into both to unlock stuff. I haven't put as much time into the first game, so haven't unlocked everything, but you basically win cash after each race to spend on whatever you want. You unlock characters, handling mods and tracks in Transformed by completing events and unlocking the last ones is quite hard. Having said that though, Transformed has definitely got the better characters and tracks in my opinion. I've made a video all about it that I pinned in the top comment. Transformed is better, solely due to the tracks, gameplay (rolling and flipping, drifting, switch drifting, risk boosts etc.) and overall the sense of speed. Team Sonic Racing won't top SASRT because it's just that good.

@@jawabear330But Transformed has a more expansive roster, with many more SEGA reps (at the cost of others, unfortunately). The gameplay is vastly improved form the first game and tracks are way more varied. In the first game, it was 24 tracks that were all the same 6 franchises, 9 of them being Sonic. Transformed is more balanced and there's about 1 track per franchise (but with a couple getting 2 or 3). So instead of the same 6 franchises, it's multiple franchises that each get a track.

@@Kapojos it's also on PC (the best version as it's 60fps) and Wii U and 3DS. It's going to be 10 years old in November, so it pre-dates any current gen consoles. I'd be highly surprised if you could find a first hand bonus edition now that's got an unused DLC code.
