Jokes are fine sometimes, even in colors it fit the tone they were going for but trying to make him act like a cartoon character doesn't work as well in the games for some reason compared to the actual cartoons like boom and prime.

Merlina is that one boss in The black knight that you can beat super fast once you figure out how the Crit slash works you beat her in two rush attacks. Blaze in the IDW comics does describe Sonic as "Being free as the wind, he has no master" letting a little bit of Percival out.

Like really, its like Sonic is fighting himself Just in different incarnations in both games Its also fun that in a way Sonic here is both Arthur AND Mordred, as he killed illusion Arthur and was the one choosen by the sword Lastly but not least its also fun that this game kinda predicts what would have been "gotcha!" moments from its players if it had been released without the twist at the end "So Sonic doomed Camelot right? I mean he killed King Arthur and how the story goes" "Well yeah but maybe Merlina will save it with the scabbard afterwards? Pretty sure thats what they implied, since now she has the power of immortality after Sonic gave it to her before he left" The twist both answers and destroys both of these conceptions and makes you wonder what happened afterwards where it left off

Honestly, this and Secret Rings are if anything my favorite representations of the Sonic franchise as a whole. Whenever I think of Sonic, whenever I want to try and act Sonic or something, I think back at Black Knight. This is the game that I believe solidified my love for this franchise in a way I don't think any other Sonic game could, and every time I remember it exists I am glad I have a Wii. This is peak Sonic, the story most deserving of a crown for the franchise, and fittingly, its the story where our blue blur was a king all along.

Sonic and the Black Knight is still, to this day, my number one sonic game. It portrayed Sonics character best, as well as his moral code and honor as a knight. It had one of the coolest super sonic variants, one of the best soundtracks, and probably the best story in a sonic game that I've ever played imo. Sonic Forces is the Black Knight writers wrote for it: - plot is the most generic, fanfic-tier isekai you could think of. - random attempted suicide scene that's completely out of nowhere and tries to take itself seriously but just ends up being unintentionally funny. - cliche twist villain who isn't really a twist because the foreshadowing had zero subtlety. - conflict is instantly resolved with a hallmark-tier speech that Sonic fans act like is Shakespeare.

Godamit I eat these videos on Black Knight up so much. It's not even right to say it's underrated anymore given all the love and joy people have for it but it 100% has my favorite Sonic Story. At least in the games since personally a certain season 3 storyline of a certain other show is just as powerful to me. But honestly this game is so good and it's story and character writing is so emotion and beautiful. I'm just glad we give so much love to it nowadays.

I personally think that "With me" is a significantly better final battle theme than "7 Rings in Hand" for one simple reason: overuse. "7 Rings in Hand" is used as the title card, stage select, mission victory AND failure theme. And THEN they play it again for the final boss. To me, it just comes across as the developers reusing the song because they didn't have time to compose anything else. (Admittedly, that's probably what happened, but it still bogs down the finale a bit)

So much Sonic and the Black Knight love nowadays! I’ve loved it for years now, and I’m glad it’s gotten the nostalgic treatment some stuff usually gets. Star Wars prequels? Maliciously maligned until around a decade later, and now they’re beloved. The Amazing Spider-Man movies? Now seen as a nice treat; not perfect, but Andrew Garfield’s portrayal is now beloved. Pokémon Black/White? Gen 1 hype was at its highest at the time, so a lot of hate was levied towards those games. And now they’re seen as possibly the best games in the franchise. And now we have Sonic and the Black Knight. Love to see it.

Ive been on this earth for 23 years. I played Sonic and the Black Knight when I was 9. Been listening to the OST for all these years and I NEVER made the connection that Merlina’s theme was just a slowed version of With Me. Thanks for opening my eyes to that. On the other hand, I agree that Black Knight is among one of the best characterizations of Sonic, I loved the gameplay and the amazing story that comes with it. This was my first exposure to Sonic as a character. I grew up just playing the classic Sonic games, but this was the first game I played where I got to experience Sonic as a character. I really looked up to Sonic and I agree this is the peak of his character. It's kinda sad that the next game was Colors where the writers went for a more comical approach ( I actually really liked colors) . I think sonic tackling a difference in ideals to be very compelling for him as a character.

You're right. But to be fair,whatever happened after colors wasn't colors' fault. During that time,sonic series was getting too serious so they went with a completely different direction with colors and it was a breath of fresh air. The problems started with generations where the story of the game was practically non-existent. Lost world is where they started to play things safe because they were too afraid to try something new because people just loved to hate on sonic. And don't even get me started with Forces. They didn't even try with that one. They only made this game to cater to the audience and to get satisfactory scores from the reviewers. It's the least inspiring sonic game.

The story series and rider series were both my favorite in the entirety of the sonic franchise. I wish so desperately for them to get more sequels, but it probably wont happen since the people who gave them flak spoke so loudly, and its sad. Its sad some of the most interesting concepts and stories wont get touched on again for that reason. Its sad we wont get new interesting story books touched with the flare of one of my favorite franchises and character cast. It's sad that sonics' best rival his lovable rouge fellows probably won't show up again. It's sad that the sonic games going forward will lack this soul. Im not saying the newer games dont have it or interesting concepts, but they won't ever be this grand again, and its disheartening. Frontiers has had the best creative execution since Unleashed (imo), and while the concept of forces was good, the execution of gameplay lacked (again, imo) and boom was just a mess.. I wish i could go back in time and experience the games in which i love so much all over again for the first time, they were so special. No matter what people say, Seven rings, black knight, and riders, will be PEAK for me. For both their OSTs, story/lore, and characters, as well as the joy they brought me when i played them. I have replayed those games so many times, i am always in love, but i wish i could see another part of those creative stories again anew with new stories to tell.

I love sonic and the Black Knight. It is one of my most played Wii Games (together with Wii Sports and Brawl) the music is one of the biggest Reasons. Also CGI in the Unleashed-Storybooks Era are absolutely peak. Also something I really love in this game is the moral system (with is very subtile). I still have the Sonic OST one when I work out or other things like that PS.: I miss the early 3D Sonic Era. SOnic Adventure was THE Game of my Childhood, Sonic Unleashed . made fun to play and was perfect since the changing of the playstiles. And DarkKnight: Well it is the only Sonic Game that made me cry with it's Story I enjoy these Games so much more then those new AAA Titles. I even enjoy Shadow the Hedgehog more besides it's definite Flaws. Only because I can see that the developers making them had a kind of new Idea. And I Hope Sega can see the good work what they did with these Games and not only there flaws

Once she starts reveling details is when Sonic realises how different their belives really are. Merleina waning the world to stop in place to try and preserve a single moment and have it go on forever. Sonic charshing every moment he lives and never stops wanting the world to move forward so he can do the same.

Story book sonic is my favorite sonic. Love Black Knight's story and characterization. Although I will mention SA1 and SA2's story are et down by the pretty awful english translation. Those game's stories are much better when played with the japanese script and japanese voice acting. Unleashed is great too as it was really when Jason Grifith finally found how he wanted to voice sonic and it's still my favorite voice sonic has besides Ryan Drummod. Knight of the Wind is still my favorite Crush 40 song

This is the best Sonic has ever been written. It's by no means the most narratively spectacular story in gaming, but for Sonic, this is as good as it needs to be, and better. I've already seen some people in the comments being all "Yeah, well, this game isn't as good in story as [insert favoured title here]" and they're missing the point. A game's story doesn't have to be the best in the entire medium to be good. Maekawa was always the best writer for the series, nobody else compares. The _downgrade_ we got after this is so sad, and it's a big part of why I gradually fell out of love with the series once it moved away from him and into whatever the fuck we have now. I long for him to come back to the series and bring these characters back to the way they used to be before SEGA became fixated on brand identity and being as safe as possible.

23:10 Don't you mean the 2000s era of Sonic? 2010s (post Generations) was the true dark age where nothing interesting or derivative came from the Sonic Brand. Black Knight released in 2009, Unleashed in 2008, Secret Rings/Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)/& Riders in 2006, Shadow the Hedgehog in 2005, Sonic Heroes in 2004, and Sonic Adventure 2 in 2002. The 2000s was a golden age of Sonic games, not the 2010s which only had two good great with the rest being mediocre at best and brand destroying & stagnant at worst (kind like how King Arthur's world would have been if Merlina won).

I guess I should have specified "dark ages" as meaning darker stories, willing to take the character in more interesting directions. I'm surprised at just how quickly the internet has shifted to recognizing these games as the amazing works of art they are, instead of the roasting session, they got when they were first released.

The true clowns are the game journalists and retro video game KZbin channels perpetuating that dated mindset that the 2000s era sucked. They were peak Sonic.

There's a reason critics hated the 2000s era. The games just suck to play. Shit like Colours was a great direction. Shame about Forces and Frontiers tho.

The 2000s games aren’t even that bad to play, idk about your experiences with most of the games in that category but for me they weren’t monstrosity’s to play like people claim. Colors in terms of environment was really great but the gameplay could’ve been better

I've always adored this game ever since I played it as a kid. It's had an ENORMOUS influence on my life, and people calling Sonic having a sword stupid... Well... I think it's AWESOME, and I WILL be referencing this game and it's ideas in the upcoming Smash Bros digital comic I've been working on. 😁
