My personal favorite part of Black Knight is how Sonic behaves in the cutscene before the final boss. He doesn't treat Merlina as a genuinely evil villain, wanting to simply stop her and be done, but instead speaks to her like a friend, asking for the reason behind her actions, trying to talk her out of having to fight. He only decides to attack once it's made clear she isn't going to stop until she's been defeated.

@@walkerslegendzYou know how 2000s Sonic haters just love to paint Sonic as the bad guy for EVERYTHING he does including saving people and inspiring his friends to be their own heroes like him (seriously, because they like seeing Sonic’s friends attack him by making him look like a politically incorrect cuck instead of the interesting and three-dimensional character positive analysises of Sonic treat him as, they think he’s worse than more hated characters like Elise, Omochao, Chris Thorndyke, the Deadly Six, Infinite the Jackal, and heck, even Sonic’s flanderized friends in the 2010s) in Black Knight because they would rather take his friends’ side (instead of Sonic himself’s) that Sonic’s adventure in Camelot was made up by him so that he could forget to spend quality time with them resulting him to be chased by them with Piko-Piko Hammers (and I don’t just think it’s just one of his ex-girlfriends (besides the completely indefensible Fiona Fox) Amy Rose (whom I like depending on the iteration, like I thought she was anything but flanderized in Sonic Adventure, Sonic Boom and the comics except for the ones written by Ken Penders) that chased Sonic with her Piko-Piko Hammer denying that either she was Nimue or that Nimue looked and sounded like her (thinking Sonic secretly likes being chased by her for his jealousy of her being with another Sonic boy like Knuckles or Shadow or a Babylon Rogue whom she would likely deem better for him). Maybe it’s my theory, but I also think the rest of Sonic’s friends and rivals that chased him at the end of this game was Tails (denying he was “just some blacksmith like Sonic would reduce him to”), Knuckles (denying himself as Sir Gawain or even thinking Gawain would look and sound like him), Shadow (denying he was Lancelot), Rouge (feeling like Sonic forgot about her too by completely leaving her out), Blaze (denying that she was Dame Percival or that Percival was ever a woman regardless them all possibly being offended over gender-bending women), Silver (feeling left out the same way as Rouge, the Chaotix and the Babylon Rogues (Wave having broke up with Sonic in case they ever dated, Storm feeling left out like the rest and Jet denying he was Sir Lamorak and that he had a knight of a doppelgänger like him. Not to mention them also feeling for Merlina when she not only raged at Sonic thinking she was just an overrated AF serial killer like Walter White from Breaking Bad, but also wanted to fight him as the main antagonist of the game even after she accepted defeat like she should’ve thus tying to the beautiful ending of a kinda sorta underrated game… until the post-credits scene which wanted to give us the idea that unlike Merlina, Sonic was the real villain of the game for the reason I said.).

Random fact: there's a file in the sound test bonus feature, where Blacksmith!Tails asks about Sonic's gauntlet in a similar way to how he asks about the knights' weapons, implying that modifying or changing Sonic's gauntlet was going to be either switchable or modifiable.

In Unleashed, Sonic was much more of a calm, mature character with Chip being much more of the youthful, energetic character (not to say that Sonic wasn’t energetic). In Black Knight, Sonic was much more like how he was during the Adventure games with him being cocky and cool hence all the Adventure references in the game like with the music. What’s great is that Jason Griffith can pull both versions of Sonic and that’s what makes him the best English voice for sonic in my opinion 💙

I love this story and characterisation, Sonic's personality and the way he acts everywhere is the peak of his character, also really loved Merlina as a villain. The art style and graphics, although they aren't extremely high budget, the style feels just so matching and feels so expressive. Haven't played the game but from all the clips and everything I've seen the story. music and characters are amazing.

I love that this game is getting the respect and attention it deserves. I remember being like 7 years old and thinking that the coolest thing in the world would be sonic with a sword. while that gimmick was probably the coolest thing at the time, what made this game so amazing was the way the story captured everything I liked about sonic. I expesically loved the fact that instead of the terrible cgi cutscenes weve been used to in basically all sonic games (even with current day frontiers), they instead decided to do more of a comic style story book approach to story telling. This on top of the music, the collectables... man this game was awesome. I felt as if sonic worked best in these settings, thrown into a random world or siituation where he does't spend too much time wondering how he got there, rather how to solve it in a way he determines to be the best, whether its wrong or right. Great video!

It didn't age well at all (seriously, Sonic was mostly in character in the 2000s, and I trust his story). While technically, what Sonic did (he stood her up on their date and he confessed his feelings to her in Unleashed, whereas on that topic, I wouldn't be surprised if Sonic turned into Dark Sonic the Werehog) was wrong, I feel like Amy took it as if Sonic were worse than his other ex-girlfriend Fiona Fox (unlike in Ian Flynn's comics) and other enemies, yet more people felt bad for Amy (and the rest of Sonic's friends and rivals like Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge and the Babylon Rogues) and wanted Sonic to just stop being "self-centered", "dishonest", "misogynistic/likes to beat up all women", "inhuman", "narcissistic", "racist", "anti-SJW" and "a deliberate danger to his people". I understand the feeling of being stood up on an important event, but then there's also taking things too far (heck, even Sonic's friends had their moments back then of being out of character themselves by enabling Amy's flanderization in games like Black Knight and the Riders series, mainly Free Riders, and I'm sick and tired of those who defend her in that game) and needing to respect Sonic and stop treating him like a bad person/character just because he did something wrong, especially because he has plenty of optimistic, protective, level-headed and skillful qualities.

This was one of my favorite games as a kid cause I just loved Sonic and I was a huge nerd so Sonic with a Sword was just the ultimate mash up. The combination of great music definitely hooked my little brain on playing way more and I would just sit there swinging that damn wii remote for hours. Going back and listening to the soundtrack now also just makes me love the game more cause I have just have a fondness for the soundtrack and the memories associated with it. Personally, I like using Shadow more than Sonic, because when you use soul surge, everything stops due to Chaos Control. With Sonic, everything slows down. And if you get Shadow's ultimate weapon, Shadow will use Chaos Blast. It doesn't have a very wide range like in Shadow the Hedgehog, but it's very useful if you're in a crowd.

I also really like how we see the effect that Merlina letting the underworld loose has on the land, as we revisit old places and see them changed. Further building her up to being a threat. I feel like there's elements in this game that sugest it was going to be so much more, the short runtime (which to be fair i don't see as a bad thing, on the contrary nowadays i loathe the thought of having to put my life into some 50 hour game regardless of how good it is) Sir Lamorak and Galahad aren't used at all in the story, the knights only being playable in 4 levels doesn't give much of a reason to go back to them with different weapons, the style system unlocking kind of late in the game, etc. But despite that the story, the look, the soundtrack, my favorite song ever Knight of the Wind, the medieval gothic aesthetic, Sonic's best characterization to date and the satisfying gameplay are enough to make it my favorite Sonic game next to Frontiers

There's a German video that explains some of the finer points of this game's story which I found to be rather eye-opening. One of the points is that Caliburn tests Sonic whether he has the potential to be a king. A knight can run away since he is of more use to his king alive than dead. But a king must be willing to sacrifice himself for his people. That's why Caliburn becomes Excalibur when Sonic refuses to give up when fighting Merlina. I think that's what you missed at 3:08 and 3:22, but I did so, too. P.S.: You called Black Kninght a bad game in the thumbnail? I think its gameplay is surprisingly deep, but it took me a while before it clicked. That's why I consider it to be underrated. But I also somewhat like Secret Rings, so maybe I shouldn't watch your video about it considering how much you seem to hate it.

Just thought of something: you keep saying this whole story is somehow an ideological clash where no character is inherently wrong. But if Shadow was in this story, the real Shadow, would he feel this conflict? Not saying he'd side with Merlina per se, but would he be so quick to take Sonic's side? After all, he knows what its like to see something he cares about end, and not particularly in a good way. It would have been a good opportunity to see Shadow connect with Sonic through this journey.

if you craft the best swords for the characters they get very powerful. shadow fires chaos spears with every sword swing and his soul surge becomes chaos blast. blaze her thrust attack creates a fire spear in front of her that kills multiple enemies. and knuckles, i have no idea i see no difference so you can skip him lol but according to google it increases his soul surge reach and his swords hit all enemies on the way back

Unironically one of my top 5 Sonic Games. The Story, music, and even Gameplay is amazing to me. Sonic’s characterization being at his peak and the last time we’ll ever see the REAL Sonic makes it even more special.

"the REAL Sonic" You mean the Sonic you grew up with? Who are you to be the arbiter of what and what not the "REAL Sonic" is? Shiro Maekawa himself said that he wasn't a fan of the classics, and wanted to make the character into his own thing. So even the writing in this game is a detraction from the "original" Sonic. Either way, it's very dumb to gatekeep a cartoon animal in the way that you are right now. All Sonics from all eras of the games are still Sonic, and they're just as valid. Sonic is Sonic.

The quote from him about mortality is so amazing but we had to scrap that and not build from that development he's had thanks to the critics, SEGA and Pontaff. Sonic peaked here and was the best.

Sonic and the Black Knight is a game I have never played. It’s also a game that makes me want to CRY every time I watch a video about it. It’s also like… just really really cool to me. Like, Sonic is cool. Swords are cool. Combine them. Boom. Even cooler game. And that’s not even mentioning Shadow, Knuckles and Blaze in ARMOR with MORE SWORDS. The character Bosses in this game are not pathetically easy especially if we're talking Lancelot Returns and comparing them to the character Bosses of Adventure 1 is a horrible comparison
