Backwards running feels like such an obvious mechanic to have in sonics skill set. Specially into levels when a large enemy chases you.

yeah its like taunting, I guess, but from the point of view of game play, he doesnt need it. Especially in fighitng heavy games like Sonic Heroes, or Sonic Frontiers, where enemies dont die in 1 or 2 hits, sonic strafes, or jumps over them, he doesnt usually need to back pedal. Sonic can back up in Sonic and the Secret Rings, but that game is whack.@@mmystixx3285

We need Break Dancing and Backwards running in every game! 🤣 There's actually alot of cool ideas here, love the style gauge and you can really get some insane momentum. Running through Chun nan you literally feel like Sonic, the levels/ranking just need to be specifically designed for the engine and it could be a sick time.

This game introduces so many wild concepts of gameplay that it's nearly overwhelming, and the physics are all bouncy and all over the place as Sonic can easily go flying off about any platform like a ping pong ball, and I love it. I think we could use more fan game that go "screw it!" and try giving the hedgehog some more wild experiences.

There are many Sonic fan games that are good games, that do a great job of improving upon and emulating Sonic’s gameplay, but this is the only one I’ve seen that really captures what it’s actually like to be Sonic the hedgehog himself, and turn that into an absolute blast of a video game experience. . . At least based on this video, I haven’t played it yet

I love Sonic mods and fangames that port levels from other games and give you the ability to run on any level geometry. That's such a cool concept!

@@evilbritishguy3581 i think the cinematics and swinging of the camera are actually a great addition and should be kept (albeit maybe reduce how far sonic can be on one side of the screen so just decrease the swivel if at all possible) and if you can, pull the camera back as speed increases, not a ton but more than there is. im no game dev, so i dont know how any of this works but this is my opinion

I don't think i've ever come across a sonic fan game like this before- The camera looks a bit hit or miss for me but the movement is insane from wallrunning to backwards running (which feels so in character)

@@evilbritishguy3581 I think it's just I'm not use to having a camera that's this dynamic. To be more specific it feels like it tends to have a mind of its own. And also feels too wobbly sometimes. There are moments when it seemingly works fine but others the camera is too close or a bit unresponsive. This may be apart on my end (skill issue) but I get weird sonic story book games vibes while playing it. And I think I'm use to something more like gens and frontiers. I can't tell if the camera is just a me thing and I'm not sure what you can make of this input

​@@EthanMastercrafter The Camera itself is indeed quite dynamic. My Philosophy regarding the camera is that it should always be looking where Sonic is going, especially when running at high speeds. There is actually an invisible cube which the Camera targets and this cube always moves towards where Sonic is running to (once he is going fast enough). The faster he runs, the further way from Sonic it moves away from his position, thereby ensuring that you always see where he's going to be. Additionally, the FOV increases to further emphasise Sonic's speed, especially when running very fast and the camera will hang back if Sonic has a sudden increase in acceleration i.e. when boosting. I'll see if I can implement a way to toggle or adjust how dynamic the camera is in the settings for the next update. Thank you for getting back to me 👍

@@evilbritishguy3581 I have one more thing to say. I believe this sonic works best in larger maps. Playing on Wuhu island felt beautiful and the ability to jump and run on walls was beyond anything I've ever seen and is exactly what I wanted in a sonic game. To top it off the camera actually felt decent to control at top speeds somewhat. When it came to the other level imports controlling sonic was a nightmare and I couldn't gain any proper speed. I think large scale levels can really help compliment sonics speed. Even if it's just a simple city import or a desert with vertical walls to scale I think could go a long way. Thanks for reading my feedback and I hope this helps with the development of this game

The part where he was jumping from mountain edge to mountain edge so freely was something that I’ve always have wanted in a sonic game. PLUS! The bboying and running backwards mechanics are so dope

Wait…so this is basically Sonic…but with parkour/skateboard mechanics…how did I never register this for so damn long? The momentum mechanics in 2D Sonic was apparent but there was a struggle in 3D, so SEGA went for alternatives until they can solve it. But the ideas of tricks, wall rides and grinding sounds like something straight out of a skateboarding game, SEGA got the blueprints but can’t figure out how to build it. However, there’s also the inclusion of high-speed combat when they made Sonic Frontiers so there’s that too.

@@AlbertBalbastreMorte Oh, sorry about that but at the same time though, while you are correct that SEGA had JSR/JSRF as something to be applied to Sonic, I think the way it’s played is…you know…different from Sonic obviously. It’s in a small map, you got limited tricks and you’re constantly chased by cops so..there’s that.

5:55 wow, this really puts into perspective how massive the sonic unleashed levels really were and just how fast you go in that game, almost makes you feel bad for the developers who put all that effort into modeling and texturing for an area only for sonic to blitz past it in 2 seconds

This is awesome! I love when people get creative instead of porting stages to these frameworks. Whoever made this found a really creative way to do combat in a sonic game. While the devil may cry combat is fun in any game, this is what sega should have done with combat (get super creative like this) Edit: I don't think porting stages to this movement does it justice, I'd love to see them make a giant custom stage, though with this movement, stages need to be bigger then GT even I'd think.

I've ported quite a number of stages to my fan game but it's true, they really aren't built for the level of freedom I'm looking to give to players. Going open world in a big way is something I definitely have in mind.

@@evilbritishguy3581 that's what this movement needs, in some of the linear stages, it looks a bit off, but from the tutorial you had, you can tell the movement is awesome. Do you remember seeing infinity adventure pack 2? (Not the castle one) something like that would be awesome for this! This is definitely a project I want to keep up with! Very awesome work!

The backwards running won me over. Edit: Also the Sonic Rush music. (best ever barring all of the Sonic Riders series of music) Edit2: OMFG HE USED THE SONIC RUSH SPEED GAUGE COLOE SCHEME! (blue>yellow>red) A small but lovely detail! Edit3: Okay was NOT ready for a Wii sports resort x Sonic remix. That was a good choice for the openness of such a stage. Seriously, who needs a plane to fly over the island when you got this crazy momentum.

I watched a video by BlazeHedgehog, talking about making Sonic work in 3D by giving him driving controls when he's at high speed. I'm glad to see what you've made here.

Oh I see this is a Fangame-Fangame! lol Ok but seriously this may have potential. There are some moves I think should be implemented in Sonic movesets. The first, the Cy-loop/Spin cycle from Frontiers for ground enemies. I feel that could work well with this. 2nd, maybe when you are charging up a spindash on the ground or Midair for a longer period. When you let go it unleashes a shockwave or AOE to damage nearby enemies. 3rd, how different types of homing attacks? Now this is inspired by the guys working the Infinity Engine Plus. Say when Sonic Homing Attacking an enemy. If you press a different button combination Sonic will Kick the enemy into others. Or bounce off it head. Or lunch it into the air. Stuff like that. All in all this is impressive. The only issue I see. It’s going to be a bit tricky to make levels that feels…balanced I guess is the word.

Another thing I feel in a game like this there should be a lot more enemies gunning for you. And traps too. As in a row/line of robots with guns and rockets at the ready. Or motorbugs chasing after you.

I forgot to include it in the Tutorial before uploading but enemies that collide with Sonic while he is charging a spindash are launched into the air. Bouncing will also double bounce surrounding enemies up into the air.

I'm not a fan of being able to fly all over the map like this, but there are some cool mechanics in here. Being able to start a wall run on any surface reminds me of the way Sonic jumps from pillar to pillar in the Sonic CD and Sonic Heroes openings. I think there's potential there if they bring the speed back down to a reasonable level, get rid of the boost, and consider ways to use it in level design. The burnout looks cool, but the fire trail isn't even a threat since you'd always be moving forward. If you can charge up the burnout during a drift like a mini turbo, that's also cool. Running backwards is silly, and I like it. The style gauge sounds interesting and is a potentially good way of increasing the importance of things other than raw speed, but it seems too easy to fill and the bonuses don't seem impactful.

Sonic and the Hedgehogs makes me think of him having a band that's either separate from the SU band, an alternate name for SU, and Gadget and the Gadgetinis (for some reason, that last one just popped into my head...).

Ngl, I had been considering implementing a story that involves Sonic forming a band with Shadow and Silver in hopes of achieving fame, fortune and super stardom but I think I'm quite a long way away from making that happen. No promises

man, the last time I saw sonic run baclwards was the starts of sonic heroes and sonic x. They really should bring it back, especially for cutscenes when he's talking or reading. That and he probably runs for fun every day so he likely rememberz some routes from memory, giving into his cocky natures as he weaving in and out without looking.

Sonic running around wuhu Island reminded me of how good Sonic feels to run around as in Lego dimensions. My two favorite hub worlds to run in are the doctor who world and sonic's own hub!

Mechanic wise, this is the most impressive fangame by far. The backwards run feels like something that should have been implemented years ago, and the break dance would make a neat edition to sonic's moveset.

@@evilbritishguy3581 just reduce the delta, it varies too much. for example, at 3:33, why is sonic so stretched here? actually, what is the logic for the camera fov? is it proportional to the speed?

@@faetalize When Sonic's speed crosses specfic thresholds, the fov lerps to specific values. I personally prefer a higher FOV because I find it helps me with depth perception and makes Sonic seem much faster but I'll see if I can make so the FOV can be configured to some more sensible values

Just a random thought bc I'm playing SM2 but do you think sonic is as versatile as Spiderman? The way he moves has a lot of flexibility and he can stretch his powers pretty well. If you leave out the art styles and stories then "Sonic X " and "sonic 06" kinda present a good idea of an inner city / metropolis sonic. Idk random thought but I think it could be cool for both sonic and shadow. I haven't seen the movies but isn't it a merging of sonic and realised life. If you set the tone I think sonic wizzing threw active traffic, interacting with good ai characters, running and leaping off buildings etc would be hard af. A city that is like 70% real and 30% fantasy. Shadow had guns, so why can't sonic weave between bullets. There's so many opportunities. Even running between islands just like Spiderman can fly over waters etc. Spiderman 2 even has portals to different dimensions. Sonic could literally do the same thing and transport you to iconic locations of the lore. Like I said the possibilities are endless tbh

You may want to make him stick to surfaces more than it is possible with pure physics. Sonic flying through the air is poorly controlled and makes him appear slow.

for some reason the camera controls dont work and sonic is stuck at the angle he is in. I dont know why I could really use some help as this game looks really fun

I suspect the Dynamic Camera is enabled in the settings. Disabling this will give you more control over the camera. Also, the Camera Sensitivity may have defaulted to 0.

If anybody read all of that, then similarly I think sonic styled battle royale type game like cod or shinobi ninja strikers could be cool. Like imagine all the characters randomly went on holiday with each other. Friendly competitions just get mad intense bc sonic & knuckles are hyper competitive. And even more so when shadow and his gang randomly turn out to be vacating in the same place. There's so many activities that can be pushed to the "extreme" just off speed alone. I think to get good sonic games there needs to be a redefining of sonic, the outside but what he translates. 20 century cool is a lot different to 21st century cool. Hell "cool" isn't really even a word like that anymore.

Anyway despite constantly being hopeful for sonic realistically i tapped out of the fixation after sonic X, sonic underground is my second favourite series and his sibilings will always be ones i remember and like as much the other known main characters. My favourite game is shadow out off all the games, it was dark and had guns. If yiu ask too many questions then shadow on a motorbike doesnt make any sense. But forces was wack and everyone keeps saying dont get frontiers. And to be honest and gta-esque dark overtones of shadow was actually an amazing feat imo. Oh yeah and i heard shadow 06 was wack too. If i ever get a chance ill play the remake that independent developer made

Running Backwards is considered a Stylish Action and so lets the player continue to build the Style Gauge while they're in-between enemy encounters.

I'm not trying to rain on the party going on here but all I can say about these fan games these days is just: *"Ugh, another beautifully made sonic game that isn't for low end PC users, like does anyone that's relevant know how to do that these days? If money grew on trees, I'm plantin' thirty of them bitches so I don't have to do this anymore."*

Hi there, I'm sorry to hear the game isn't performing too well on your machine. I'm looking to implement ways to adjust graphical settings for the next update but in the meantime, there is a slider that can reduce the render distance of the camera. Hope that helps :)

I greatly appreciate the effort. I tried running simpler games and it lags on minimum. 😢 It's honestly to the point that I haven't played that many sonic fan games. Sonic Islands, Green Hill Paradise act 2, and Project endless is all I have that I can handle.

The speed cap is set to 400 but I doubt anyone will be able to reach that 🙃

The project looks extremely disgusting. I'm tired of Sonic fan games, in which they shove momentum for the sake of momentum, but with all this, the levels don't feel like levels, there's no platforming, no sections as such, at best it's just entertainment for 5 minutes, and at worst, like here, ignoring this game like a bad dream. Some ideas from this game should be taken from Sonic Team, running on rocks, jumping off them in order to remove the rails from Open Zone locations, but this ST will have to be redone and modified, obviously not in this form, as in this fan game, since it's just terrible and doesn't play like a game, just like five minutes of typical momentum garbage

Hi there, sorry to hear about the issues you have regarding momentum and the lack of properly designed levels. Currently the only level that I can say has been 'designed' by myself so far is the Tutorial, which can be completed in 5 minutes. The reason for why momentum is implemented in my Sonic fan game is because I believe there is great satisfaction to be had in building and maintaining Sonic's speed. That being said, the instant gratification of making Sonic Boost is also something I wanted players to enjoy so as a compromise, I made it so the player can Boost but only when they fill the Style Meter with enough Stylish Actions. TL;DR: You can totally just Boost to Win, but you gotta be stylish enough to pull it off.

@@evilbritishguy3581 I understand the desire of most fans to make games with momentum, but a bunch of games, or rather their levels, raise questions for me, since Sonic’s capabilities turn out to be extremely unbalanced for completing a level if it has platforming sections, and there are also levels with momentum in which the player simply runs in a straight line, using the inertia and physics of the hedgehog, but all these capabilities of Sonic are not used to complete the levels; the platforming sections are either few or fly by with momentum. Somehow, from time to time I come across Sonic JT, and its combination of momentum, platforming, and branching is much better than most projects that I have seen Out of habit, I began to spit and be negative about the inability to play momentum gameplay, so I see this quite often, I see how it is called incredible and similar words, but, in general, your demo has quite good ideas for Sonic’s capabilities. I really liked Sonic’s ability to interact with walls, rocks, run along them, and bounce. But, in my opinion, all the tools and capabilities of Sonic are quite difficult to competently implement on regular Sonic levels, I mean typical levels with platforming and all the components. This can be done, but it seems to me that it will be difficult, so much will need to be taken into account when creating levels and refining mechanics. It seems to me that the very basis of such movement fits perfectly with Open Zone gameplay, so that you can move around the world, for example, without using rails, unlike Sonic Frontiers. It’s also hard to do this, but for this type of gameplay, deep platforming is not really needed, the main thing is to make moving around the world varied and exciting. And for similar Cyberspace levels, you can make Sonic's gameplay more down to earth, so that in this form of gameplay it would be easier to focus on the platforming and component of Sonic's gameplay, or you can use the momentum gameplay from Open Zone, creating levels with various sections and situations that the player can get into ( for example, give the player the ability to throw rings at enemies, maybe not only, or for a certain fork in the level you can use the player’s reaction and jumping and running along walls) and make the momentum gameplay truly interesting and useful

​@@EnSigmayour work is very good but I do think the speed you can get is way too high. I think this has a lot of potential and unlike most people your actually innovating instead of emulating whats there. If you were to ever make level design make sure to add obstacles in the sky so if Sonic can't just skip giant chunks of the level without skillful play. I hope this helps 🙏.
