I knew about Sonic.exe, so if I heard anything that had to do with it, I couldn’t sleep that night. I lost all my lives and was like “Ok whatever” until the music came up. Then I was like: “Well, guess I’m not sleeping tonight. I’m hearing some Sonic.exe stuff.” I’m listening to this right now, in broad daylight, and I can’t go in my somewhat dimly lit hallway, because I’m afraid I’m going to see Sonic.exe somewhere. I honestly think this and the boss theme really fit with how Sega of America portrayed this series, namely Robotnik. Japan portrayed Robotnik as a silly villian and the Japanese boss theme reflects that. Looking at the US, we had stuff like SATAM, which portrayed Robotnik as a much more threatening villian and this and the game over screen reflect that

Exactly. Sega of America views Robotnik much differently. They view him as this menacing, serious, and scary threatening villain. SATAM cartoon and Archie comics at the time reflected that. When you think about it, US version of Sonic CD is trying to be like some sort of adaptation in some shape or form of SatAM. That's why I believe the US manual calling Amy Princess Sally isn't a typo. They wanted her to be Sally. The soundtrack reflected the tone and seriousness of SatAM more than a mainline Sonic game. It showed really clearly fitting SatAM Robotnik with the Game Over and Boss theme. This is back in the day when Sega of American can portray their version of Sonic until Sonic Adventure completely sticks with the Sonic lore from JPN in all regions, so it makes sense.

Sonic CD was actually one of the, “darker”, sonic games. While the Japanese music doesn’t make it seem like that, the world is more or less screwed if sonic doesn’t get the good future. Let’s say you get the bad future and still win, ok, good, you beat the boss, well, the place as more or less went from a lush and beautiful paradise to a lifeless mechanic nightmare. You didn’t win, you just beat the guy up top, the place is still screwed and you can’t fix it nor will it recover to its previous form.

For those who question why the US game over theme is like this... I think the US game over theme is like this is because if you fail, Eggman can literally bend reality to how he so desires. As you see with the bad futures, they are usually desolate wastelands. If you lose, that is what the future of the little planet would look like. A desolate wasteland. For a Sonic game, this game over theme doesn't quite fit. For Sonic CD's case, its actually somewhat suitable for its dark tone.

I mean, yeah. Sonic CD's bad ending is literally the worst outcome ever and the closest Robotnik has come to controlling not only the world, but time and space. If he beats you in 1, 2, or 3, at most he has the leverage of the emeralds and the Death Egg. Which, mind you is a HUGE bargaining chip in world domination. But him winning in CD means he wins not only in the present, but in every point in history. He could make it so there never was a Sonic to begin with. Hell he could make it so he was always the master of the world and universe, and that there never was a point in time where he wasn't. His empire would transcend time. Time stones were OP.
