The creation of Madonna apparently had a significant impact on the creation of the Sonic franchise. It’s obvious that she was made to cash in on the success of Jessica Rabbit (a human woman in a relationship with a cartoony anthro animal), but SEGA of America didn’t see the appeal and requested that she’d be removed. This apparently upset the Japanese developers so much that they might’ve tried reviving the idea of a human female love interest with characters like Sara in the OVA and Princess Elise with Sonic ‘06. Though interestingly enough, Madonna did actually appear in an official piece of Sonic media. In the Archie Sonic reboot continuity, she was featured as an agent of G.U.N. interrogating Dr. Snively’s past collaborations with Dr. Eggman - acting as sort of a substitute for Topaz from “Sonic X”. She was also given the surname of ‘Garnet’, which is a deep-cut nod to an early Japanese origin story for the character, wherein Sonic was the deceased spirit of a Cold War fighter pilot who fathered a girl named ‘Garnet’.

I saw someone who was japaneese in a sonic forum a couple of years ago explain that in Japan Sonic being with a human isn't seen to be as weird...if you look at the Japaneese commercials for Sonic 06 you can see it focuses more on the relational aspect between Sonic and Elise whereas the USA commercials ignore it outright. (If you analyse the story/themes of 06 enough you could even argue Elise is supposed to be the main character...but of course Sonic fans can't wrap their head around such an idea it seems) They then said that Elise was supposed to help the Japaneese "relate to someone" in the story...given how anime tends to humanize any idea that isn't usually human and that Sonic was never super popular in Japan...this line of thinking makes a lot of sense...

@@Alienrun It’s definitely a case of cultural disagreement - what appeals to one demographic isn’t always going to work for another. And for many westerners, Sonic has always been the defecto character, with all the produced media giving him more of a defined, nuanced characterization. In Japan, on the other hand, that kind of independent character isn’t exactly mass-appealing to the more conformist population, so they opt for him being more of a vague paragon type of hero for another character to aspire to be like. Unfortunately, that often resulted in some of the most annoying characters being created - namely Chris Thorndyke in “Sonic X”, who has gone on to become probably the most widely despised character in the franchise.

From a different video that explained the whole popful mail scenario...it actually got me to play the whole game out of curiosity, its pretty good for what it is...but that's not the point I wanna make... The translation for the game is not "faithfully accurate" AT ALL like the video suggests. The voice actors clearly are not taking their roles seriously and there's lots of really forced humor added throughout the whole game...thankfully some of the jokes actually work (aka its not sonic lost world levels of bad) but when I compared it to the JP version it was clear the localization just gave no s**ts about making a trutly faithful adaptation... Case in point, if they weren't even going to adapt it properly...I would have much rather gotten a sonicified version of the game instead! (At least then Popful Mail fans would have incentive to actually fan translate the game themselves lol) Granted...the fact it didn't happen might have been a blessing in disguise. "Sister Sonic" no doubt would be flat out worshiped by the Sonic OC community and instead of arguing whether Sonamy or Sonallly is better...they'd have a 3rd love interest to argue about -and draw r34 of- . Also have to wonder how Sonic fans would like the game if it was a Sonic game...since its a cross between platformer and RPG mechanics. Probably a mix of "its not sonic" and "this is refreshing" but it would be interesting...lol! :P

Mina Mongoose, Blaze the cat, Tangle, and practically any other character female or male. (Some want him to be with Shadow and such.) Considering she might of been related to him "Sister Sonic" probably wouldn't be shipped as much. (Though, there are shippers that like incest fan ships too.)

It's rumored that Ken Penders owns Scourge and all the Archie Sonic characters, and that's why Sega won't use them. In reality, Ken Penders only owns the publishing rights to stories he wrote for Archie, and absolutely none of the characters. He can't even use these publishing rights as they can't be legally reprinted without getting the Sonic license, and there's no way in hell Sega's going to work with a man who's tried and failed to take them to court over Shade The Echidna. (There were multiple lawsuits, Archie settled out of court, Sega and EA just had their cases dismissed outright) The real reason Sega doesn't want these old Archie characters to be used? They represent a take on Sonic created solely by the Western World and their approach to Sonic is "He needs to be American-inspired enough to appeal to Americans, but not TOO Western!" Sadly Sega proves that their biggest enemy is Sega, as references to the "Western takes on Sonic" are generally met positively (Oh God, the fandom freakout that would ensue if Sonic just said "Mobius" a single time, regardless of context), meanwhile attempts to "Re-Japanify" the character result in mixed opinions at best (Sonic X) or flat-out negative (Sonic 06), and... well... the character simply doesn't do well in Japanese markets... so Re-Japanifying Sonic for lack of a better word doesn't really do anyone any favors.

That character already exists if you've played as Blaze the cat in the first Sonic Rush game on DS you would know that Blaze is actually supposed to be an alternative universe dimension version of sonic the hedgehog she even has a villain almost identical to eggman. Also The fact that she doesn't get used because of 06 messing up her backstory in Rush gets me frustrated because she's just as fast as sonic or so it seems at least.

However, with Silver there's now two versions of Dr. Eggman Nega. Not to mention if the Eggman Nega from the future is supposed to be Robotnik's descendant that would imply that Dr. Eggman eventually finds a way to make his AI daughter Sage a real girl.

Still to this day, Sonic doesn't have a single biological family member. Within the series that detail alone isn't really all that special, most of the characters actually don't. Cream has a mother and Eggman has a late grandfather and cousin, but other than that there's not really anything. When you combine this tidbit with the fact that Sonic is capable of insane feats such as defeating literal ancient dieties and other things that should be literally impossible, still doesn't have any kind of canon backstory, and is one of the few characters to seemingly not have a home, Sonic quickly becomes one of the single most mysterious characters in his own franchise. He was still relatively unknown within his world by the time of Sonic Adventure, but was a world renowned hero by the time of Adventure 2, so it's evident that he hadn't been at it for long by the first Adventure game, as though he literally popped into existence out of nowhere in Sonic 1 or something.

Okay well with Terios.... that's not a separate character from Shadow. That's just an earlier version of Shadow. And idk what "but he looks even more like Sonic this time" is supposed to mean. In the final design, he literally looks like Sonic's model but recolored and with Super Sonic's hair. Super Sonic also being a recolor of Sonic, it makes the most sense he just looks like Sonic in another form. But Terios' concept art, which I don't think is directly exclusive to the name Terios (as the name could still be applied to Shadow's final design and Shadow's name can still be tied to the concept design.) is still a portrayal of someone clearly bad in a style that I would never mistake him for Sonic. He either looks like a very different hedgehog or like.... a demon. lol So his final design, to me, not only makes more sense for people to confuse for Sonic, and on top of that fans and casuals also confused the two for a while in real life, but also if they changed the design to be LESS identical to Sonic then they would clearly reflect it in the storytelling. Idk. The way it's explained in this video sounds more like what I'm used to hearing fans spread around, more like it was only something fans decided and everyone just ran with it.
