Sonic Colors (or Sonic Colours if you are from across the pond) takes a step forward in rewarding gameplay for a Sonic game. It stays true to the Gotta Go Fast nature of previous hit games but builds off of it by having the wisps introduce new ways to play. This was huge because of previous releases, a lot of people didn't trust Sonic games anymore. Was it gonna be fast? Or was it going to be something entirely different?

I actually really enjoyed the DS version of Sonic colors and it actually has an extra ending that u can unlock when you collect all the chaos emeralds which are from sides quest with the other characters.

@@LeopoldLitchenstein one thing i don't entirely like about Sonic Colors Ultimate is the changed soundtrack, luckily it's possible to switch to the original, it sadly doesn't apply to the opening theme song that plays once you open the game, so you're stuck with the remastered version of the opening (sucks for those who prefer the original version)

I don’t hate colors but in my opinion the 2d overpowers the 3D and the wisps are just boring. I still had fun playing and it definitely had charm.

@@fuppster yeah. For being a game marketed mostly as a 3D game, hardly even 25% of it is 3D, and sidestepping sections don’t count as 3D. At the time the game was good considering the pit that the franchise had dug itself into. There was a bit of tonal whiplash from Black Knight and Unleashed (being the two games released prior to Colours) but unfortunately it’s mere existence spurred the creation of mediocre/bad games like Lost World, Forces and TSR. Made people appreciate the 2000’s stuff more, myself being one of those people I don’t hate it ENTIRELY. I appreciate what it did for the franchise at the time, but despise it for what it’s done for the franchise now. Glitchy and badly designed messes are bad, but they’ll always triumph over mediocrity simply for having the heart and ambition to actually try.

the DS version is also a lot of fun, and has different boss layouts that i completely enjoyed fighting. *and instead of just being able to play as super sonic, you get a secret boss fight.* Edit: yes, i get it, the fight was only somewhat mediocre (unless you're like me and enjoy it nonetheless), but at least it wasn't a copy-paste of what they usually did and just gave you borderline free invulnerability. they actually tried something with it.

Color's sense of speed is completely crippled by the terrible control and heavy jumping physics and the fact most of the game is 2D plaforming, Forces had the same problem but that problem is actually worse in Colors because that game has more emphasis on precise platforming, which is near impossible with the game's physics. The only times Colors is actually fast is in autopilot 3D sections.

I prefer the serious Sonic games like the Adventure and Storybook series games cuz they offered both; comedy and serious story telling. The seriousness in the Sonic games is what got me into Sonic in the first place and how he trumped over Mario for a time since Mario's stories were "childish" just like Sonic is now. That's why I like Forces because it's both serious and funny. I can't take Colors seriously (much) and it was headache inducing to complete. I'll admit it's better than what I remember, but still, I'd rather be playing Sonic & the Secret Rings over Colors.

Let's get things straight here, Jirard: Sonic Colors is a fantastic entry in the Sonic series. It really is. I don't think too many will refute that. Thing is... I have issue with you, and others, classifying it as a "3D Sonic game." I've done the math and roughly 55% of the game takes place in a 2D side-scrolling perspective while the rest of the "3D" gameplay remains extremely linear and scripted. Again. Colors. Great Sonic game. Not a 3D Sonic game. I may sound like I'm nitpicking, but I yearn for a return to TRUE 3D Sonic someday. To me, classifying Colors as a 3D Sonic game kind of lowers the bar of what 3D Sonic is and should be, ya know? Alright, rant over. Peace!

There's a lot of 2D section, but the gameplay still the same from a perspective to another, the game switching perspective like switching speed/reflexes section ( 3D ) and more slowly/platform section ( 2D ), its mecanic bring in Unleashed to avoid repetivness, but core gameplay is the same. Just think about platforming with 3D part of Unleashed/Colours/Gen, sonic to fast, so the game must switching perspective

Being this diverse in taste is a good thing. As long as nobody acts like an ass about it, like most of the Sonic community. Heck I have been playing Sonic since his debut on the Sega Genesis. I own every game of the series so far and been outspoken about the issues I had with each of them on the Sega offical channels. But here I am standing on neither the 2D or 3D side of the line. I love both. I have issues with both and I can discuss them with whoever likes without having to throw insults and hissie fits followed by childish tantrums. That is why I love the Completionist Community so much. Diversity, yet we are not pulling death threats at each other or impose out of control rage in it. I hope people will keep in mind that diversity is the reason why we have so many great video games to enjoy. If everyone would like the same, games all would probably be just constant copies of one another with no real heart put into it. So keep on stating your oppinions, people. They DO matter! :3 ~Have A Nice Day~

I really like the fact that the Werehog and Knuckles' sections in those games slow down the pace for a hot minute. After playing FAST, my brain sometimes feels like it's actual sped. These helped me to get a hold on myself whilst still playing a game.

Me neither. And we've seen time and time again why 3d Sonic would use padding. Sonic levels at higher speeds demands a lot of resources and Sonic only games as of late end up being short as hell too.

It's because many of those "serious" stories tend to go overboard thus creating many plot holes causing the plot to fall apart. Adventure 1 and 2 had a lot of moments that didn't add up or just felt like filler to the plot to make it seem longer. Unleashed added the Werehog to the plot just for the sake of adding Beat 'em up gameplay to the game when in reality, it could've easily been replaced by Knuckles. The story book games...Jesus, nothing in those games made much sense since Sonic didn't belong in either of those settings AT ALL. Helped improve Jason's work on Sonic though, but had far too many "super serious" moments that ruined it all (Knuckles attempting to kill himself over losing to Sonic).

@@mikeanthony3300 Mike Anthony Honestly. The stories took themselves as serious as the classics. Let's not forget that the whole point of that third game was to stop the Death Egg twice. Saving Knuckles' island and making sure Eggman couldn't use all the power of the Master Emerald for himself. If that story didn't have high stakes/wasn't serious then idk what is. Mania has a pretty serious story too considering the dangers of the Phantom Ruby and how it affected the HBH. The Werehog was literally integral to Unleashed. It wasn't "just thrown in". Sonic's transformation was established early and was given an explaination as to why it happens. The whole point of the story book series is the fact that Sonic's in a strange world. His interactions with new elements and fully showing us his character are big highlights of those games for me because we've not seen Sonic's character as well written as that for some time. It's fine not to like it, but let's not act like the stories were some light hearted frolic in the Meadows lol

@@sonicfan2486 The Classics had ZERO to do with the amount edge and seriousness added in the 3D games. What are you even talking about? I don't remember ol Dr. Robotnik taking out a gun and holding Amy hostage or Boobs the Bat making sexual jabs in the Classic games. All of that "seriousness" in the Classic games were extremely chill and not at all obvious. You'd have to dig DEEP into the lore of what was going on to think something like Mania was "serious". At the end of the day, it's just a joyful adventure of traveling between memory lane and brand new adventures. Black Knight (strange world or not) is still a Sonic game that had Knuckles...fucking Knuckles trying to off himself over losing to Sonic. I don't care if Sonic was kicking it with Saint Nick, it's still a Sonic game. 06 with the half baked idea to just throw everything we knew about Sonic out the window and add in serious retcons that utterly destroyed various fan favorite characters. Remember when Blaze was cool and could handle herself? NO! How about having her travel along with some idiot who is even more gullible than Knuckles. My point on Unleashed still stands. It makes little to no sense why Sonic would turn into a Werehog of all things. It's clearly filler to add in a gameplay style that doesn't belong while at the same time slapping Sonic's ugly mug on it. The story would of been just fine having Knuckles or some other brawler type character tagging along side Sonic and Chip.

I'm not a huge Sonic fan but my favourite of the games is Sonic Colours. I had the DS version and it was a present my grandfather got me and I fell head over heels for the game. The story, the gameplay and the soundtrack was just so cool to me and I still stand by that. Some of my most fond memories are lying on my bed as a kid during the hot summer nights feeling a summer breeze in my room while playing the game. My Grandfather then passed away from cancer a few years later but now every time I hear Reach For The Stars I can't help but think of him and everything he ever did for me, Love you always Liam ❤

Blight VonDrake Don't listen to the people claiming that Unleashed, SA2, and Heroes were better. Unleashed may have had better stages as Sonic than this game it doesn't make it good since 75% of Unleashed is you playing as the werehog. SA2 had a similar deal with the treasure hunting stages and the mech shooting stages. Heroes of course has slippery physics and is basically you replaying the game 4 times combined with mediocre level design and combat. Colors however is a straight forward Sonic game. Sure the wisps are gimmicks but they are actually executed well in this game.

I prefer the werehog over a hame with cringeworthy dialog and awful voice acting, 75% is boring blocky 2D sections and the other 3D sections, most of them are hold-x-to-win. Unleashed has awesome level design, Fantastic OST, gorgeous graphics, and yeah, Werehog sounds cringy but it plays really well and it can be real fun. And most importantly, it has really high replay value, unlike Colors that i have 0 reasons to come back

Colors was the freshest thing to happen to Sonic... EVER. What a breath of fresh air. It also happens to be the last Sonic game I bought, not counting a used copy of Sonic 06 a couple years later since I bought Colors in the week of release.

How many times are you legally aloud to like a video? Because I have literally just recently (like 4 days ago) gotten into the completionist videos and the moment I saw this video I just exploded with happiness. Just like Jirard said, not many people thought this was going to be a good game seeing as how all the ones before it.... weren't the greatest. But I still would like to say thank you for making this video and Jirard you just got a new subscriber and a new fan for life. (P.S. "Reach for the stars" is an incredible song it was the first game theme that I heard after I moved back to America, and this theme and just the game overall is just incredible. In my opinion, the entire Sonic franchise peaked with Unleashed, Colors, and Generations. Those 3 are the absolute best that Sonic Team has given us. Not that I think Sonic is headed for his grave or anything. I truly believe that with the right people, Sonic Team can release another great 3D game.

I hope they keep the boost, a lot of people have become critical of it because Forces (even if that game had more of a design problem than anything) but i still find it to be the definitive Sonic gameplay.

@@matti.8465 Agreed. Forces is the worst execution of the Boost gameplay. It truly is a "Boost-to-Win" game. The other 3 games I mentioned have much more intricate level designs, and Generations especially has the most alternative pathways. The Boost gameplay is the best type of Sonic gameplay that strongly focuses on the speed. I certainly wouldn't mind a modern Adventure-style game, but I strongly disagree with the people who say the Boost gameplay should be removed completely from future games.

For one, the different playstyles are implemented perfectly, none of the three are extremely different from Sonic's (They weren't perfectly executed, but were good concepts) Infinite is great and much better than Mephiles. Not to mention that Eggman FINALLY remained the main villain without being overtaken. And the radio thing was a great way to make characters participate, overall i think it's all level design problems, like, Classic Sonic was bad on that game but only because it wasn't too well done.

And by chasing after Mario the gameplay stayed good consistently (Boom notwithstanding) but one of the main points that made Sonic stand out from Mario (plots that took itself seriously, with a fleshed out world and continuity) was lost, much to us older fans' dismay. I really enjoyed this video, in the sonic community there tends to be alot of negativity, trying to look for everything bad, but you look at any game from a fresh perspective and I loved the positivity you bring to this game, this was my first sonic game as a kid and I just remember staring in awe at just the pure... well. Colours. I just had so much fun and you are right, sonic team wanted a game that everyone could enjoy and I can whole heartedly say that I enjoy it now just as much as I did back then, I'm really excited for colours ultimate this septemer and once again, thank you for embracing this gem of a game and appreciating it for what it is, I really wish there were more sonic fans out there like you, keep up the good work :)
