I have to say that that this game has one of the most, if not the most depressing behind the scene development I've seen in a Sonic game: -The premise of this game is 'dashing across the stage like a maniac'. -Despite 4 years of development time, only 1 year is spent on full production, while the rest is focused on engine building and concept creation. -Level designers are three newbies, resulting in bland levels. -Players discovered beta stages that shows actual challenge before scrapping for whatever reason. -The biggest kicker: Several Sonic Team members that worked on Unleashed and Generations actually jumped ship to Nintendo in the past years, contributing games like BotW, Xenoblade, Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

I can confirm that Keihan Fujii, Makoto Yonezu, Ryoichi Yamagishi and Daisuke Amakawa are indeed those who jump ship to Nintendo. This, while not really significant, really shows why Mario and Sonic seem to switch place. Mario who is known for playing safe is doing something ambitious to the point he borrowed some moves from Sonic such as the roll while Sonic who is known for its ambition is playing safe a bit too much.

Not really. At least KH is about that specifically. I would compare Forces more to BvS, what is needlessly dark but don't provide sufficiently mature plot to justify that style.

@Seacliff What is how we define edginess. But as far I recall general plot of KH is relatively mature, just story is a fairy take style fantasy, and those use strong stylistic disproportions. I don't recall things like "they kill my whole family, so I would kill random thugs as just revenge" kind of bullshit. Basically Infinite from this game is perfect example of that kind of edge-lord bullshit.

I picked the game out of morbid curiosity, never big much of a Sonic fan, in fact Forces was the first 3D Sonic I tried. I ended up kind of liking it, even spent more time on it than Mania. As a whole Forces is good enough but it's very clear that it lacks polish, with longer levels and better physics it probably would've gotten much better reception.

If Miyamoto personally approved the idea and let Ubisoft give Mario a gun then you know he had faith in Mario + Rabbids. Personally, I think it paid off well because M+R is the best selling game on Switch not made by Nintendo and I've spent more time on it than BotW.

TheLunarblade well there’s one problem, you kinda can’t complete the game. Remember that chronicles has limited rings for you to pick up, so you can’t buy all the items available

You actually can complete it, but it requires grinding against enemies for loot that you can sell in shops, so ALOT of patience. With the chao that increases loot drops from enemies, this becomes less of a hassle, but still a pain, but not impossible. Of course, the pain of rng required to get the chao is the worst part for that tactic.

The Darkest Sonic game? Unleashed, Adventure 2, 06, and Shadow are all darker in my opinion. The writing is mostly just as chipper as usual, and nothing really is shown so it is not very dark at all.

Well.. I can't disagree with that. Forces was mostly edgy dark with most disappointing villain in history, and in fact we don't feel impact of those supposed tragic events (it is mostly "freedom fighters, piu piu" stuff).

One of the things I have to say about Sonic Forces is that it's not a BAD game necessarily. It's not broken, the gameplay works, and the animation was pretty good. But it's certainly not a GOOD game... at all. I've always been a big fan of Modern Sonic, so it kind of hurt for me to see this weird player-created avatar to take the spotlight away from him at every turn. It felt like Fanfic Forces, not Sonic Forces. And Classic Sonic's inclusion was just... why? He already had his own ENTIRE game that year, why feel the need to shoehorn him in to another one? And then there's the fact that this game is just boring. The levels are usually no longer than thirty seconds, and I had to FORCE myself (no pun intended) to finish the game. It was mind-numbingly mediocre.

You finally got around to doing a Completionist video on this game! I was waiting for it since November! ^_^ I agree with you, it's a good Sonic! A bit mediocre sadly as it could've been WAY better if they refined and polished it up more. Disliked the Classic Sonic gameplay as he felt "heavy" to play with. And the content wasn't too bad, I really enjoyed everything. I had fun 100% this game and I did it on ALL versions of the game. Except the Xbox one. Honestly I give this game a solid 7 out of a 10 on this game. The story and everything could've been better and it's sad to see them miss the mark there. I love the Avatar and hope to see it again. Thank you for your review. Glad to see Sonic Forces having more positive feedback. Here's to hoping for another great Sonic game.

This is a game that, in concept, I adore. Like you said, I've been wanting an ominous Sonic story for a while (I do still love the light hearted ones, but one of the reasons I loved the Archie comics for so long is that it grew with the fans). I adore the music, and if it had more content I'd be extremely happy. I don't know if execution was the greatest, but I want more story like it (if done right).

Jirard, I believe that Classic Sonic is in Sonic Forces because of something that connects Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces together. In both games, the Phantom Ruby was one of the main objects in the campaigns. And in Sonic Mania, it's possible to get an ending where Sonic remains on Eggman's ship as it blows up, and a Sonic firework blows up in the distance as Tails and Knuckles watch. And then, he runs through a portal and the game ends. I believe that's where Classic Sonic is sent into the Forces game. And then the Sonic Mania Adventures series opens up with Classic Sonic showing up in his time exactly after he leaves Sonic Forces.

@@SketchSpooks as a game its fine, as a sonic game its terrible. for a few reasons, reason 1 is the short stages, less then a minute is how long it took me to beat nearly EVERY stage in the game... reason 2 is the lack of innovation, theres almost no new concepts in the game... reason 3 is the automation... you dont control sonic, you just hold a button... reason 4 is classic sonic and reason 5 is... obviously blaze not being in thats a sin.

3 things... 1.) Better Late than never. 2.) I like the Completionist episodes, but i think it would've done the game better justice if you did a "Defend It" episode on this instead of a review. Since Sonic Forces is such a mixed game where people argue if it's good or not, I think it would've been better if you did a "Defend It" episode, since you could properly explain both the pros and the cons of the game. 3.) Anyone ever notice this game has so many similarities to Sonic Unleashed Wii? The flawed level design, the short levels, the easy as hell boss fights, and a play style no one cares about (Classic Sonic in Forces, Werehog in Unleashed). Also personally I found both games Underrated(or in Forces’ case, over exaggerated).

Not really, there's a ton of people saying it's a good game, or if not just enjoyable, they just agree at least it's not Sonic 06 or Rise of Lyric or Secret Rings. A ton of you tube videos or reviews explaining people's attitude towards the game. Most of them say the game's just okay, but people are sure to find several in which they believe they have to pick a side. I like the game, but i can see where people are going at when they explain the flaws and strengths in the game, and most of it is warranted, I just don't think it qualifies as bad.

But we still got games like Colors, Generations, hell even Lost World (which tried to act dark and serious despite its heavily cute and Classic Sonic themes/art styles) suffered from having such lack luster stories. For the most part if it wasn't the entire plot feeling half ass or not focused, then it was things like the majority of the plot simply testing just how long you can withstand the shit that comes out of Sonic's mouth. The more recent games had to much positive like themes which at times felt lazy. Colors was filled with corny and cheesy humour (a terrible start for Sonic's newest and current Voice Actor), Generations had a plot that pretty much gave up not nearly 3 stages into the game (lacked heavily of actual story cutscenes), Lost World as said before tried to hard to come off serious and dark despite the very colorful and bright setting. Forces was to dim the mood a lot in away give us similar vibes to say the Adventure games where there were much more bigger problems at stake (like Sonic for once actually being beaten by Eggman). Instead what we got was a game that heavily lacked in explaining things clearly and the overuse of the "Power of Teamwork" theme. The plot felt rushed and lacking, the new big bad and scary character was a complete pushover, Classic Sonic felt heavily shoehorned, and a few of the characters felt...well out of character.

Guess I'm in the minority here but I absolutely love this game. My OC even grew on me, this is also the first Sonic game I've beaten in many years where even Colors and Generations kept getting dropped(but have now picked up again), the mission variety really helped. I also never ran into any glitches while beating this game, yes it is a bit short but replay value is great and SOS missions are nice. I highly recommend it. You could say.. Sonic Forces me back into the fandom!! P.S. I also love the soundtrack and playing as Shadow again! #Edgehogboys

Unknown Kong same here despite same despite the fact I never played the game. The last game I played was Generations and I got it a year or two ago. I never own a Wii u or Switch because I forgot about it and I don't have enough money to buy the Switch. Besides that the game feels like it had potential and maybe that why I like it. I played a bit of it for free on PSN, and the impression I got was that the game was built around grinding and sidequests. The goal wasn't to make a single game that you would blast through over the course of a day, but something you would come back and play a bit of each day. This is most apparent with the inclusion of the daily quests, and the avatar leveling.

I beat the game in a 3 hour sitting. But I truly loved Sonic Forces for what it was, even with the flaws in the story. My one true complaint is that it's just too damn short. This could have been a more fleshed out story. Not like Dark Age Sonic, but a mix of Adventure with that bit of darkness I thirst for.

I went from playing sonic adventure 2 to forces and let me say it definitely makes forces feel like the best game in the world. I loved playing through forces (I had this video stuck in my watch later playlist because I knew I'd get the game eventually) and it was an all around good time for me. My Sonic forces story: "After beating the game.
