The whole, 'release a barebones game with barely any content and have free updates afterward', is another bad trend that has popped up recently. What happened to normal game development?
@Robin-234
@Robin-234 2 жыл бұрын
@@SolarisPolari I would say I have no idea why that trend caught on, but I have a feeling that we all know. It's the 'fans' along with the tight deadlines the people in charge hold over developers heads because of "profit". They just aren't allowed to take their time and finsih the damn game because it has to be put by *that date* and any time it gets delayed their bosses are probably standing over their heads like "you better have this out by then, I don't care if it's not polished". Speaking of delays, the large ammount of 'fans' who quite litteraly threaten to kill people when a game is delayed aren't helping the situation. Honestly imo a game shouldn't even be announced until it's almost complete, but that's my highly subjective opinion. And I'm sure the higher ups at companies would absolutely laugh at it.

Ship it in a state that is fully playable and functional or delay it and get it fixed. I'm well past gettin my game, comin home, and then spending the next 3 hours downloading the other half of the game they didn't bother to implement before shipping. For those defending this practice, look at how Tony Hawk turned out. The final game in the series was so utterly broken without a day one patch you couldn't do anything with it and if the servers go bye-bye then you no longer have a patch to get so the game remains permanently unplayable and broken ie. you cant preserve the game or go back to it without those files being somehow preserved with it. Its a poor business practice and one that shouldn't be rewarded, defended, or encouraged.

@@vibezonegaming His issue is that more and more games are being rushed, period. Instead of paying $60 for a complete game, people are playing $60 for an incomplete and forced to wait--in a sense, people are paying $60 plus their time. In economic terminology, it's an opportunity cost--they could invest that money in stocks or buy other games or do anything else with that money, but people who buy games at launch nowadays are basically getting scammed.

Its easy to forget sometimes that a lot of people either live without good internet or don't take their machines online at all. For some, the disc version IS the definitive version. Don't forget, the servers for consoles (and PC stores) will inevitably shut down someday. As shown with the Wii U, 3DS, Vita, and PS3 too, that day may come sooner than we think. And when it does come, people might not be able to patch these games (at least, not easily).

One thing that should be brought up more about “Ship first, patch later,” is that the patch has to be downloaded from an online server. That's not necessarily true, games have always been released with game breaking bugs, because there's always something that's gonna fly under the radar (look at the n64 zelda games for example, those games are full of small glitches that probably would have been patched in a day 1 update if that was possible at the time) But there lies the true issue, instead of making day 1 patches (or heck patches in general) to patch out small bugs that flew under the radar, even after intense testing, instead AAA developers now use them as excuses to release barely finished messes

@@lpfan4491 Honestly that's the main issue with Colors. It's not the writing, or the "wisps" (I mean come on guys the Wisps were actually great in Sonic Colors, it's overused in other games like Classic Sonic being good in Generations and trash in Forces), it's not the fact that the game takes place mostly in 2D, or the "blocky platforming", it's the act structure. Originally, this game would've had 2 main acts, like Colors DS, which are around the same length as Generations Modern Sonic stages, and said main acts feature a great mix of 2D and 3D, with platforming that's usually disguised well with the environment. The gimmicky, shorter acts were just missions that weren't supposed to be mandatory, like Generations Missions. What's even worse is that 50% of the main acts got cut in 2 smaller acts, and the game suffers as a result. Had Colors had it's original act structure, the game would've honestly been as good as games like Unleashed and Generations, but akin to more of a "casual" Sonic experience, like the classic games, where you pick up and play the game for an hour and beat it, always having a great time and refining your play-through each time. Colors wouldn't have this whole "blocky, 70% 2D game" that people always talk about. It's a shame Colors never got it's act structure fixed in Ultimate, it would've caused way more people to know about why there are jarring 20 second acts you find through each world, and how the main acts are some of the best levels we got in any Sonic Game. Sorry for going on for so long.

I know because I was stupid enough to go back and get all the red rings AND go through the Egg Shuttle mode, and that's a LOT of loading screens to sit through. Yeah, it's still not as bad as the loading times in Sonic '06, but considering that the Wii version of colours, the version that we're supposed to believe is 'inferior' as of now, loads significantly faster... there's just no excuse.

Sonic Colors to me is just okay. 6/10 in my opinion. A lot of the level design is just blocks and there should be more 3D than 2D. Unleashed and Generations did it right. And even in Generations the 2D sections are far less and way better made, so Ultimate should have re-worked the level design like Generations.

*@Khyon* I would argue that patches were a bad thing even for Smash Bros Ultimate because of how many there were to the point of making the game too big for its own good. The Switch itself only has 32 GB in internal memory, so with Smash Bros Ultimate taking up close to 16.3 GB, that's half of the Switch's internal memory and less room for other games. That leads to people having to spend extra money in buying Micro SD cards in order to fit in more games, along with their updates. That's exactly why Radicalsoda streamed Colors Ultimate and Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl unpatched since he was unable to update those games with little memory space on his Switch and he also wanted to play the games as they were originally released.

@@azure4622 Actually, it is the patches' fault, or at least partly, since the game should've been released in its finished state without people not only having to resort to buying more SD cards, but also needing to have Wi-Fi access in order to repetitiously update the game with its patches. Some may not have good enough Wi-Fi access, so they're out of luck when it comes to keeping the games up to date. It's also the fault of Nintendo for making the Switch have little memory space in its internal memory to fit a number of games in it. Alas, while this does spark some hope for the story itself, there is still much doubt to be had when it comes to the game's gameplay and world design, two aspects that need to be nailed if this is truly supposed to be a step in the right direction.

Don't get your hopes up. The reason why the level designers weren't good for Forces is because SEGA scared them off with their terrible working conditions.

It really is sad that people today just ignore this issue of games being half finished. Legit, people on twitter argue with me that isn't not a big deal and I should let people enjoy it and to shut up. No I'm going to call out shitty business practices, just because you're okay with being ripped off doesn't mean I want to.
