I suddenly remembered this video after seeing a friend stream themselves playing something similar, it took awhile to find but it was so nice to finally find it. It's odd to see so many other people talk about how nostalgic this video makes them feel, I used to watch it all the time when I was like ten wishing for a day where I could actually play this. The way the map was just completely empty and you could explore the out of bounds fields. Looking back at it now I understand all the technical reasons for this but remembering my younger self who was so amused by it all, it's just so weird to actually watch this back now. It's just a really weird thing to describe honestly, but if anything I want to retroactively thank you for something my younger self was so intrigued by, the amount of wonder I used to get out of this is really something I wish I could experience again, and re-watching this brought me close.

This video takes me back. I had a really creative imagination back then and still didn’t understand how game boundaries and limitations worked so I always had the idea that every video game map like the ones in Sunshine and 64 were secretly even bigger worlds that you just needed to somehow “unlock” yourself at the right time to gain access (kind of like a glitch, cheat code, or whatever).

There's something so strangely "playable" feeling about this. (I come off freshly completing Sonic '06's "Sonic" mission)... something about this feels so "right" for Sonic, and it's kind of strange. It's like it might be the sort of game design 3D Sonic needed all along.

Wow. I gotta admit, that's some pretty good mapping. If you did this, I applaud you, because you obviously know how to 'rip' maps from their original games, and import them into another game engine. So much like that has been done. If only it was possible to rip EVERY part of the map, because I notice a few pieces were missiong (I don't blame it. Those missing parts cannot be supported because of the programming.) If you did not do the epic ripping seen here, I applaud whoever did the mapping!

It's fully possible it used to look better than this. KZbin used to upscale odd-resolution videos to 480p, but around 2009, they implemented the quality selector and began to do the opposite. Instead of bumping low resolution videos up to 480p, they started bumping them down to whatever the next lowest quality was. So there was most likely a time where it did look (a little) less blurry than this.

@DeynatheTaggerung This engine was coded in Blitz3D, but it doesn't matter. They've long since moved on. Look up the "Egg Engine", that's their new project, in a completely different coding language.
And yet Mario and Sonic have had like 4 crossovers. The three Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games and Brawl.

@TheBIizzardStorm What reason do I have to lie? I've made games myself and posted download links to them. But I didn't make this. The guy who made the engine needed environments to test Sonic's physics, and there was a model exporter for Mario Galaxy/Sunshine levels. That's all there is to it.
@Chronobus12 жыл бұрын
I doubt that would be the case. Infact I think with all the Dash panels and Springs pampering him everywhere he goes, he'd probably have an easier time getting around the stages. Combine with the fact that Mario can Swim and Sonic can't would give Sonic a harder time to survive in underwater levels.

Somehow, I really miss those kind of graphics. Made the gaming so much simpler for me to enjoy for some reason. I guess the emphasis wasn't so much on ultra-fancy graphics, but just pleasant usage of what you had, all to deliver a game where the excellent gameplay made the game grand.
